5 Productive Things to Do While Waiting to Hear Back from Colleges

1/17/2013

You’ve submitted all your college applications, been interviewed, asked for tons of letters of recommendation, and written thousands of words on why you want to attend “Fill in the Blank” University. Setting your speed on cruise control and coasting for the rest of senior years sounds just perfect, right? Not exactly! You only have a few short months left in high school, so you only have a few short months to enjoy your newfound free time. On top of being the year for college applications, senior year is also your last year to experience everything you want to experience in high school, and since you’re no longer using your free time to fill out college apps, you have time to spend in other ways.  Here are five productive ways to bide the time.

1. Research Your College Choices More

You may think you have researched all you can research about your college choices, but before you hear back from them, it wouldn’t hurt to make a pros and cons list for each school. If and when you’re faced with having to choose between two (or three, or more!) schools, you’re ready to make a more informed decision.  Try looking more closely at specific policies of your university choices (like dorm policies and judicial procedures), what the nightlife is like around campus, and look into extracurriculars you’d be interested in joining once you get there.

2. Get More Involved With Your Extracurriculars

10 Things To Do Over Winter Break

1/9/2013

With winter break in full swing, parties and family gatherings are over and being productive becomes the last thing on our brains. Winter break is a great time to catch up on sleep or episodes of Dexter, but you definitely shouldn’t waste it lounging in your PJ’s all day! Take advantage of this break from school and stress and get some things done that you usually have no time for. Use some of these ideas to make sure this winter break is the best you’ve had.

1. Read a Book

Your classes this semester may have gotten you burned out on reading for a while, but reading for fun is a lot different than reading for fear of failing the next pop quiz. Check out the bestsellers list in the paper each week, or see what book-turned-movie is coming out this year and read away! Borrowing books from your local library or downloading them on your e-reader will save you cash. Reading something new may give you a new outlook on life, and it will at least give you something to talk about at your next social gathering!  Why not read The Hunger Games, the hit book that is being made into a movie this spring!

2. Have a New Friend Visit

You know all those friends you’ve made at college and are now missing? Well stop missing them and pick up the phone! Having friends from college visit you at home allows them to get to know your family and see where you call home. It’s a great time to form a stronger bond with that friend, and a great time to catch up with a friend you’ve been missing.  Just make sure to clear it with your family first!

3. Make a scrapbook

5 Ways to Make New Outfits from Pieces You Already Own

12/4/2012

If you wake up every morning, look at your same pieces that you wear every week and think, “I need new clothes,” STOP RIGHT THERE! Maybe a few new pieces would spice up your wardrobe, but it’s very likely that you have some buried treasures hiding in your closet somewhere.  “Wait? What?” is what you may be thinking, but with a little creativity and an open mind, you’ll find that those same basic pieces can be reworked or paired with new items to create outfits that look brand new. With a little help from Pinterest and collegiettes across the country, we’ve come up with five ways to make new outfits out of the items you already own.

1. The “Free” T-Shirt

We’ve all got a million t-shirts from various giveaways on campus, but pairing them with Nike shorts every day can get old quickly. Instead of wearing that “Roar Lions” shirt with your typical jeans and sweatshirt, try pairing it with skinny jeans and a blazer or cardigan for a casual but put-together vibe. If there’s a ridiculous graphic or picture on the shirt that you wouldn’t be caught dead wearing, but the shirt is in a great color, try up-cycling it! One great option for up-cycling a t-shirt is cutting strips horizontally, stretching them out and tying several (about 5 usually works) to create an adorable scarf! If your plain white tee seems to be what you always want to wear, check out this HC article on 20 ways to wear a white t-shirt for ideas and inspiration.

The 5 Strictest Universities in the Country

11/12/2012

Generally speaking, college and freedom go hand in hand. No parents, no curfew and no rules. This may be true in some cases, but at some colleges, the rules set in place by honor codes and university policies are sometimes stricter than mom and dad’s. The following five schools have honor codes and policies that are among the strictest in the nation.

1. Brigham Young University
BYU, a University affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, has been in the news recently when basketball star Brandon Davies was dismissed after reportedly violating the part of the school honor code that prohibits premarital sex. Aside from having a rule against premarital sex, BYU’s honor code also restricts homosexual activity, doesn’t allow men to grow beards (so No-Shave November is off-limits!) and allows women to only have one piercing per ear. The code also doesn’t allow women to wear skirts that hit above the knee, strapless or sleeveless tops, and it forbids hairstyles “extreme in styles or colors.”

So Long High School, So Long Besties?: How to stay in touch with your High School BFFs in College

8/13/2012

You took the senior trip together, you spend every long summer day lounging by the pool together, and you shop for college supplies together. It seems like you and your besties have the strongest relationship and that nothing, not even going to college 2,000 miles apart, will break that bond…

…Nothing, that is, except a busy class schedule, making new friends, finding your way around town, stalking (in a totally non-creepy way) that cutie from bio and taking full advantage of your unlimited meal plan. With such a packed schedule, how’s a girl supposed to find time to Skype with, much less visit, her long lost BFF who is equally as busy? Collegiettes™ across the country agree, staying in touch with your high school friends means making time for them.

The Celebrity Kids We Wish We Were Friends With

1/27/2012

From their trips to jail to their (multiple) trips down the aisle, we’ve seen celebrity kids crash and burn before our eyes. Though kids of celebs often get a bad rap, there are also tons of them who are genuinely cool people. Some celeb kids choose to follow in Mom and Dad’s footsteps by finding their own place in the limelight, and some are just content to go to college and survive in the real world. No matter what the case, there are legit celeb kids out there, and HC has compiled a list of the ones we’d most like to hang with (or admire from afar, whatever works!)

Blessed with his mom’s adorable curls and his dad’s charming smile, Quaid’s future in Hollywood looks bright.

Time Management 101: How To Stay On Top Of Everything

10/28/2011

Fall semester is in full swing, and in addition to the papers and assignments that seem to keep piling up, your other activities are requiring more of your time as well. So how can a busy collegiette™ like you find time for everything? By managing it, of course! Time management is a skill that everyone needs, but it is also a skill that takes planning and discipline. If you’re ready to learn how to manage your time well so that you have time for everything you love, read on!

Plan for Every Day
“Treat each day like an 8-5 job,” said Melissa Medlin, the director of Career Planning and Development at the University of North Alabama. She says to make a schedule of your class time and work time, and use the breaks in between each for everything else. Taking advantage of breaks can really cut down on the time you spend at night studying and preparing for class. If you schedule that two-hour break between biology and English to go to the library and do research for an upcoming paper, you’ll have two hours of research done! Sure, it’s fine to occasionally take a break from school and hang out with friends mid-day, but remember that the time you spend during the day relaxing will be the time you spend studying that night.

Use Your Free Time
“Don’t just leave time empty. Plan free time, too,” Medlin said. She says planning naps, hanging out with friends and other fun activities is important, too because you can see when you have to do work and when you can leave some time free for something fun. If you know there is going to be a great party Saturday night that you don’t want to miss, make sure you study throughout the week for that huge test on Monday.

What to Wear When Applying to College

10/12/2011

Applying for college is one of the most exciting and stressful times of your life. You have to answer so many questions, including what to wear to each event you go to. Should you go casual or more formal? Do you need a suit for your college interviews? It can be easy to get stressed out over what to wear, but don’t worry about it! HC has got you covered. Collegiettes™ across the country weighed in on what to wear to different pre-college events. With this guide, you can forget about worrying about what to wear and save your worries for more important things.

What to Wear: The SAT, the PSAT or the ACT
If you’ve ever taken a standardized test before, you’ve probably seen a lot of sweatpants and maybe even pajamas. Though it might be tempting to roll out of bed and take the test, taking a little time to dress yourself the morning of the test is the best way to go. One collegiette™ said, “sweatpants generally make me feel lazy and unprofessional. I want to feel like I can achieve.” Lazy and unprofessional are two words you definitely don’t want associate yourself with on the day you take such an important test! Take the advice of this collegiette™ and dress for success. Try pairing super-comfy jeans, leggings or yoga pants with a tee and sweatshirt or cardigan. Those classrooms can get chilly, so make sure to bring a jacket or sweatshirt, even if it’s warm outside. Also, avoid headbands that can give you a headache, jewelry that makes noise every time you move, heavy earrings, and other accessories that can be distracting. The overall goal is to be comfortable and confident so you can focus on your test and not on your outfit!
