Saturday night was a night full of fashion, music and glam. SHEI Magazine, a fashion magazine on campus, put on their annual Launch Party releasing their Fall 2012 issue. The event took place at The Work Gallery on State Street, which couldn’t have been a better place to showcase this radiant group’s hard work.

The event hosted a talented student DJ by the name of Alexandre Teo. His incredible musical skills attracted many guests strolling through State Street on Saturday night. His passion for music shined through the work he showcased. The Launch Party also hosted some of the Universities top student representatives. Ann Taylor, Rent the Runway, Madewell and Pink all made a guest appearance at the event with tons of free goodies, raffles and promotional cards. The event attracted so many people that the infamous small gallery was packed to the limit with excited students and proud parents.

The Fall 2012 issue of SHEI Magazine, is the best to ever hit stands! This semester’s theme, “The Expedition Issue” allowed for the incorporation of the most incredible ideas and concepts. This issue’s shoots took flight, literally. Everything from a private plane to an old vintage car was shot. This issue couldn’t have come together so well without all the hard work of the SHEI team as well as everyone else in the greater area of Ann Arbor that stepped up to help this student group shine.

Greg Foakes '12

11/11/2012

Name: Greg Foakes

Year: Senior

Major: Math

Hometown: Rochester Hills

Hobbies: cooking, yoga, soccer and going to concerts

Song that describes you: “SexyBack” by Justin Timberlake

Relationship Status: single

SP: What’s your ideal girl?

GF: I like a girl with a lot of personality. Especially someone who’s not afraid to tell me what they think; if I say something dumb they’ll call me out on it. On top of that, she has to be very social with an adventurous personality, and also a little sass. My ideal girl doesn’t wear a lot of makeup because she’s comfortable with who she is in her own skin.

SP: What’s your major turn off?

GF: Negativity. There is nothing worse than a pessimistic girl who likes to complain. Nobody wants to date a “negative Nancy”. I feel I myself am a very optimistic individual who is always smiling. I can’t date someone who I feel is emotionally draining me.

SP: Where’s your perfect first date?

GF: A picnic would be my perfect first date, I love picnics! Half the fun is packing the lunch together. A picnic has a very casual and laid back setting, it’s easier to have a conversation without a lot of noise. Plus there are a lot of escape routes, if needed.

SP: Favorite pick up line?

GF: I wish I was your derivative, so I could lay tangent to your curves.

SP: What is the best relationship advice you were ever given?

GF: Never change who you are for somebody else.

SP: What’s your favorite body part of a girl?

GF: A girl’s eyes.  When you are looking at her eyes it’s so fascinating to think about what goes on behind them. There’s a whole other world back there.

SP: What’s the best part about having a girlfriend?

GF: Having someone who always laughs at your jokes, no matter how bad they are.

5 Reasons HC UMich Loves Fall

10/12/2012

Fall is a time for new beginnings, new clothes and more importantly yummy cider mills. This is the season where we put the past behind us and start fresh with a new school year. The fall is a time you reconnect with old friends as well as make new friends. This fall, make sure you get out and enjoy the crisp weather before the Michigan winter comes our way. Spend the day relaxing, laughing, strolling and baking. There are so many things to fall for this autumn, are you ready?

• New fall trends: Fall is the time of year when everyone upgrades their closet. We update our worn out sweaters to cozy cardigans and our destroyed denim to a fresh pair of new Levi’s. Fall is the perfect time to wear that new trench coat you bought on sale this summer or those pair of brown tights. Also don’t forget about your leather booties, you’ve been waiting to pull those out since last fall. The great thing about the autumn season is that you can re-wear your favorite summer dresses, as long as you pair them with tights, a bright scarf and a jean jacket. Your summer dress will effortlessly turn into your favorite fall outfit.

• Halloween: There is only one time a year where you can pretend to be someone else, this day is called Halloween. A holiday like this is a once a year opportunity to give yourself a new identity. No matter if you’re six or twenty five, dressing up for the day is a blast. Be creative when it comes time for your Halloween costume. Don’t just buy a readymade costume online, put some thought into what you’re going to wear and then recreate it!

• Cider Mills: Fall isn’t truly over until you attend the cider mill. The cider mill is the best way to bring in the changing leaf weather. Enjoy a day at the cider mill with friends and family. Make sure you don’t forget to grab some warm cider and a donut. No trip to the cider mill is complete without a box of donuts.

My Summer on the Seventeenth Floor

9/18/2012

This summer I was very fortunate to be able to spend an incredible three months in my favorite place in the whole world: New York City. The people I met, places I went, and things I saw were unbelievable and truly life changing. Not only was I able to spend the summer in such a wonderful place, I was also able to intern at my old time favorite magazine, Seventeen Magazine. Working as a fashion intern has definitely taught me a lot. I learned about a lot of new qualities that I didn’t know I had that helped me succeed this summer.

I surprised myself in how easy it was for me to acclimate to this new fast paced environment. Before I began my summer adventures, I was extremely nervous. Being so new to the fashion world, I was nervous about making mistakes. I mean haven’t we all seen The Devil Wears Prada? However, as soon as I was thrown into the game, I realized I’m more cutout for this than I thought. Sure I had my hard days and difficult messes, but at the end of the day, I knew I left a lasting impression on my editors as well as my peers. Interning for such well known magazine taught me a lot about work ethics as well as ways to get ahead in the fashion world. Here are some tips I learned this summer on how to succeed in the fashion industry!

1. Know your stuff! If I had to choose the most important piece of advice I can share with someone from my summer, it would be this. Educating yourself on what’s going on in your field of interest in the key to success. You can be the hardest worker in the group, but if you don’t know who the editor-in-chief of the magazine you’re working at is, no one will take you seriously. Do you research before starting a job; make sure you know every single detail about the job you’re applying for. You never know when someone might ask you about it.

Treat Yourself!

4/11/2012

Being a college student living on campus, you quickly realize that you don’t have a lot of free time. You’re either running to class, to a meeting or attempting to start the homework that has piled up on your desk from the last two weeks. Sometimes it is important to take a second and reflect on what it is you’re doing. We’re so busy that we never have anytime set aside for ourselves. It might sound silly, but spending some time with yourself might help you clear your mind and come back to your work with a fresh perspective. A lot of times treating yourself to a fun day is exactly what the doctor ordered! When you work so hard, a little break is more than deserved.

Sometimes interviewing for a job is one of the hardest and nerve racking things you can possibly go through. You are so nervous that you will mess up the interview and not land the job, that you start to question every little thing you say and do. You start to worry about what you will wear to the interview. Then you begin thinking of what they will ask you and how you can answer it without sounding like every other person they will interview for this position. Here are some ways you can make sure you ace your interview and land your dream job!

1  Get excited!

Interviewing for a position is both stressful but also exciting at the same time. Sure the interview process will have you pulling out hair, but you have to stop and embrace the moment. You just got an interview with your dream job! That alone says something about your skills and experiences. Clearly they thought you were talented enough to deserve an interview with them. You have to make sure you are proud of yourself and what you accomplished! If it wasn’t for your stellar resume and cover letter, they wouldn’t have called you back. Good work

New PYT: Paid Young Taking on the World from the Driver's Seat

2/16/2012

As women we are always told what we can and can’t do. However, in order to be a strong confident woman, we have to look past these barriers that others put up for us. Just because someone’s a girl, doesn’t mean she still can’t accomplish the same things that a man could. It is important to always have faith in yourself as a woman. In fact, it’s also okay to be an ambitious woman who knows what she wants. Some think that ambitious, strong and pushy females are intimidating, when in reality they are just trying to work hard for what they want. No matter if you’re a guy or a girl, if you want something badly enough, you have to work hard for it.

Furthermore, there are always going to be guys out there who think that just because someone’s a female she isn’t capable of doing the same things that males can do. There are also going to be guys out there who are intimidated of ambitious women because it’s a punch to their ego.  However, not all guys are like this. Many men find confident and driven women to be extremely attractive and daring; these are the women that know what they want in life and aren’t scared to ask for it.

Here are some female television characters who bask in the glory of their ambition. All five of these women are extremely successful in their lives because they are driven and determined.

Shining Brighter Than Sunshine

1/23/2012

Sometimes the hardest thing we can do for ourselves is be optimistic about our life. Why is it that it is so difficult for us to have a positive outlook? As humans we have a natural tendency to question every good thing that happens to us and linger on every bad thing. If we all took part of this, how could we ever achieve true happiness? At the end of the day, all we really want is to be happy, right? Happy in our school work, our careers and the relationships we share with others. Someone wise once said, “Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means you have decided to look beyond the imperfections.”

How does one look beyond the imperfections? Sometimes you feel like everyone around you is pointing out something negative or trying to “open your eyes” to reality. In order to truly consider yourself an optimist, you have to look past these negative thoughts and realistic statements you hear from others. You also have to block out your own pessimistic thoughts that you may have lodged deep in your mind. In order to truly be happy we have to incorporate an almost a care free outlook on life. Not everything will always go our way throughout the years; we won’t always get that promotion at work, be the world’s greatest basketball player or the perfect girlfriend. However, knowing that you’re doing your very best in life is all that matters. If you learn to be okay with not being the next Michael Jordan, life becomes so much more enjoyable; you’ll be able to focus all your hard work and energy on your own definition of an incredible basketball player. Don’t let anyone ever ruin your dreams by telling you to be realistic; realistic might as well be pessimistic. Instead, start being optimistic.

Here are some steps to becoming a true optimist:
