How to Get Beach Hair (without spending the day at the beach!)

6/7/2013

Summer is finally here – and that means it’s time to get our priorities in check! Warm weather presents us with a list of several important tasks: get tan, get in shape, and do something “summer” to our hair. But tanning takes time (not to mention it’s not the healthiest), and so does getting in shape. However, there is one thing that you can learn to do right here, right now! Learn how to make your hair look like it spent the day at the beach, no salty water required.

Finally Achieve Natural-Looking Beach Waves

It is important to realize that every collegiette has different hair, so not every beach-tastic tactic will work for you. But there are different products and techniques that will aid you in your quest to achieve the luminous locks you crave.

Julianne Carell, Freelance Beauty Assistant at Glamour says, “If you want beach waves, a curling wand should be your best friend. Let your hair dry naturally but add a texture product. Then go in with the wand everywhere and don't worry about achieving perfect curls. Leave the ends out, so it doesn't look too done up. After, finger through and loosen the curl. If it feels too curly, loosen it up with a flat iron. Spray and you're done!”

Your Guide to Fashion’s Night Out

9/5/2012

This year Fashion’s Night Out is turning four! On September 6, stars, editors, fashionistas, designers, and models will strut through stores across the nation in celebration of fashion. So, what’s the best part about this VIP night? It’s simple. Everyone is invited to mask in the glitz and glam of this annual party.

This night may sound too good to be true, but we promise it’s not. We’ve answered all the questions that may have come to mind in order to ensure that you have the best Fashion’s Night Out this year!

What is FNO? Fashion’s Night Out is a night dedicated to, you guessed it, fashion! This annual event began four years ago and started off as a night to kick off New York Fashion Week. The night is essentially one huge party that takes place at multiple locations. Stores host different celebrities, offer special discounts, and provide swanky atmospheres to give you a unique experience. Brands will also host glamorous parties in hopes to gather a crowd. One of the best parts of this night is that you can travel from location to location and soak as much as you’d like (or can) in!

Where is this taking place and how do I attend? This year Fashion’s Night Out has grown into something huge! It used to be a few locations in some of the top cities around the nation, but this year there’s so much everywhere. You can start planning your night around town by clicking right here. Once you pick your favorite events grab a few friends and hit the town. On this night everything is a runway and you are free to be whoever you’d like to be!

Campus Cutie: Julie Simonsen ‘13

9/5/2012

Name: Julie Simonsen
Year: 2013
Major: Fashion Merchandising Management
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Favorite Class: When I like a class it’s because I relate to the professor. So I could have the best class and worst professor, but I’d still hate the class. My professor for my first merchandising class was really great. He was the first one I felt like I could go to and talk to outside of class and I felt like we really connected—it’s so important to find someone like that!

Favorite quote: It’s so cliché, but everything happens for a reason. I really, truly, actually believe it. When anything bad happens in my life, if I think of that quote it’s really reassuring. Even if I don’t know the reason when it happens, I always figure out what the reason was and it always makes the bad thing a positive experience.

$hopping: Marshalls & TJ Maxx! I feel like you get the best deal and it isn’t something that everyone else is wearing, plus I grew up going to those stores. They’re my mom’s favorite stores, too, which make them that much better (I really love my mom!).

Something that people don’t know from looking at me: I feel like my whole life when people look at me they have this perception of me—blonde, high school cheerleader, etc.—if I knew someone was judging me I would want them to know I’m not just like that and that I’m really ambitious. I’m not the typical blond stereotype that people group me into.

Campus Celebrity: Nina Garcia

9/4/2012

Many of you know Nina Garcia as the fashion director at Marie Claire and judge on Project Runway. However, the Fashion Institute of Technology knows her as one of our incredible alums. Nina once graced the halls of our buildings and explored our campus with eager eyes. She had hopes, just like us, of making her dreams come true and knew that FIT was the place for her to build her foundation at. We are so honored the Nina took the time to answer some questions just for us! Take a look at what it was like for her as a student here and make sure to read the advice she shared for you.

Her Campus FIT: How did you know that FIT was the school you had to go to? Or what was your deciding factor?
Nina Garcia: I knew from a very early age that I wanted to be in fashion. When I was 8 or 9 years old I would spend hours sketching dresses and collections. After graduating from Boston University, and moving to NYC to pursue fashion, furthering my education at FIT was an obvious choice. I had heard about the wonderful Fashion programs available at FIT and its stellar reputation.

HCFIT: Do you have any standout memories from your time at FIT and if so, what are they?
NG: I loved being able to explore the city with new friends. I went to boarding school all through high school and then lived in Boston, which is so much more of a college town than NYC. It was great to have the structure of still being in school but with the ability to take advantage of everything that NYC has to offer.

The New OPI Germany Collection

8/10/2012

I absolutely love painting my nails. It’s a habit that I’ve grown to really indulge in since I moved away for school last fall. I find it calming, relaxing, and a ton of fun. When you get a manicure in a salon they sometimes do a cute little design on one nail, but when you paint your own nails you can do whatever you want. Plus, when you paint your own nails you can spend money on new polish instead of the process, and then you get to keep the color(s) once you’re done!

Picking out new colors is one of the best things in the world. I get to walk into a store and look at isles of colors and choose the ones that will feed the look I’m trying to achieve. Personally, I love different brands for different things (such as base coats, color, and topcoats), but one of my favorite brands has always been OPI. I find that the strokes go on so evenly and that the color always comes out glossy—often times I get compliments that they look professionally done when I’m wearing this polish!

The 20 Cutest Bags for Back-to-School (for every budget!)

8/9/2012

Back-to-school means tons of shopping. Pens, pencil cases, binders and books—but those things can get so boring. While they are necessary, and even fun to some, my favorite part of back-to-school is picking out my bag(s)! Purchasing my bag for school is always such a hard feat—I mean as smart collegiettes we want to make sure we’re okay with the price tag, that it’s big enough to fit all of our belongings, and most importantly that it defines our sense of style. Her Campus has approved 20 of the cutest bags for back-to-school, making sure to keep different personalities and budgets in mind!

HC’s Exclusive Interview with Jillian Rose Reed (Star of MTV’s Awkward)

8/8/2012

Have you ever wondered what the stars of MTV Awkward really think and feel? Her Campus was able to get the inside scoop and we came to find that they’re really a lot like us! Take a look at our exclusive interview to get some details on the current season and even see how Jillian can relate to her character, Tamara, in real life.

Her Campus: What are you most excited about for season two?
Jillian Rose Reed: Throughout the whole season the thing that I’m most excited for is all of the boy drama unraveling—because there’s so much going on this season with the love triangle between Maddy and Jake and Jenna—I’m really excited for fans to see where that goes.

HC: What else can they expect besides the boy drama?
JRR: There’s a lot going on this season. There’s things going on with my character and Sadie’s character and our storylines intertwine a little bit—we get to have a couple different things with each other. And there’s also the storyline of Jenna’s mom who wrote the letter to Jenna from last season and so her whole family is dealing with how they’re reacting to the letter and finding out that it was Lacy—so there’s that drama too. This season just has a lot of stuff going on!

HC: How do you think you relate to your character, Tamara, in real life?
JRR: Well we both talk really fast! I think that’s probably the biggest similarity between us. But Tamara is the funny, sassy, loving best friend and I feel like I’m definitely like that. I can be sort of sassy sometimes too, so we definitely relate to each other.

The Post-Grad Debate: Should You Live at Home After Graduation?

8/6/2012

Congrats, grad! You’ve aced every test (ha!), attended every class (I’m sure), and every decision that you’ve made has shaped you into the grad that reads this today (right?). However, while those choices may have gotten you this far, the real tests in life start now. The choices that you make from here on out won’t receive a grade or get you into any program at school, but they will enrich your future in a very… real world way. From budgeting your money to job-hunting to finding your future hubby (whoa, that’s some real talk)—you know that HC is always here to help you.

Right now we know that summer is coming to a close and you probably have one huge worry on your mind: Do I stay at home now that I’ve graduated or do I move out on my own? If you are lucky enough to have parents that will take you in post-grad we know this decision is huge. But have no fear! We’ve already debated the important factors for you.

Your Bank Account:

I can’t even tally the amount of times I’ve heard a friend say, “By the time I graduate I’ll have $10,000+ in my savings account.” But I can tally the amount of friends who have actually achieved that goal: one. Saving money while you’re in school is hard—really hard—and HC understands more than anyone how busy you’ve been with classes and unpaid internships. Even though saving money as a collegiette is ideal, it isn’t the most realistic goal. So what’s the best place to live when it comes to money—home, or on your own? The money factor very well may be the biggest one.
