The Four Greatest TV Shows You’ve Probably Never Seen

10/5/2012

I am often asked what I think are the greatest television series of all time. It is very difficult to answer this question because I know that many people have never seen the shows I would mention to them. For this reason I am reluctant to answer. Below I have compiled a list of four of the greatest TV shows of all time that the vast majority of people have never seen in an effort to spread their greatness and significance. Each of the series I have mentioned below contribute to or have contributed to television in their own right. I have expressed my opinion and given a brief overview of the series without divulging any spoilers.

How I Met Your Mother Episode 8.2 – “The Pre-nup” Recap

10/2/2012

Last night’s episode of “How I Met Your Mother” was essentially the story of how Barney and Quinn broke up. The episode began with Older Ted explaining that the summer of 2012 was deemed the “Summer of Love” because everyone was in love. Barney and Quinn were together, Ted and Victoria were together, Robyn and Nick were together and of course Marshall and Lilly were together. Ted skips to October 2012 because he says that since they were all happy, there was nothing to talk about.

Barney and Quinn are still engaged and ready to get married but an obstacle is put in their way. Barney’s boss (played by the always exceptional Bob Odenkirk) tells Barney that if he is going to get married, he must get a pre-nup before the wedding to ensure that Quinn doesn’t take everything from Barney if they were to get divorced. This becomes the major plot of the episode. Barney begins to explain to Marshall, Ted, and Nick that the reason he wants to get a pre-nup is because there are a lot of things he does not like about Quinn that he would like to make her change before they get married. The humor lies in the fact that Barney misinterprets the purpose of a pre-nup. Instead of using it to try to change something about your fiancé, it is supposed to protect you if you were to get divorced.

How I Met Your Mother season premiere recap

9/26/2012

How I Met Your Mother has been teasing its audience with (not) finding out who “the mother” is for 7 seasons. The season 8 premiere was no exception. The episode begins with Ted sitting at a train station in Farhampton in his tuxedo (presumably from Robyn and Barney’s wedding) reading a book. We get no explanation for why he is at this train station or where he is going. A lady sits next to him and says, “You look like you just came from a wedding.” This prompts Ted to tell the story of how he got there. The episode flashes back to Robyn talking to Ted on her wedding day. She says, “I can’t go through with this wedding.” This then begins another flashback. This flashback picks up exactly where the flashback from the season 7 finale ended.

The first major story of the flashback is the Barney/Quinn relationship. Since we all know that Barney and Quinn do not actually end up getting married, it is hard to watch them together. I personally love Quinn, so it is hard to watch. The major plot point for this storyline on the premiere episode was Quinn finding out that Barney and Robyn have a history. She finds out after Marshall and Lilly, who are delirious since they have not slept very much because they have to take care of their newborn daughter, tell her. This interaction between delirious Marshall and Lilly and Barney and Quinn were the strongest comedic points of the episode. Jason Segel will never not be the greatest part of How I Met Your Mother.

Top 10 Series to Look Forward to this Fall

9/6/2012

Every year in the fall, there are a slew of new network television shows that begin. Some last and remain on the network for multiple seasons, while others are cancelled halfway through. I compiled the shows that I think will be the ones that get renewed and are worth tuning in to.

1. Last Resort (ABC; Premiering September 27th 8 PM)
The series Last Resort is about a Marine submarine crew that is ordered to launch nuclear missiles on Pakistan. They defy this order and are subsequently fired on by the United States government. They are then left for dead on a fictional island where they must survive as “enemies” of the United States. The series stars Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age, House), Scott Speedman (Felicity, Underworld Trilogy), and Autumn Reeser (The O.C, Entourage, No Ordinary Family).

This is my number 1 show to look forward to in the fall for one main reason: the creator and executive producer of the show is Shawn Ryan. Shawn Ryan is responsible for my favorite show of all time, The Shield. Even though his last few shows were not as critically acclaimed or successful as The Shield, I think that Last Resort has the potential to be. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not in any way saying that Last Resort will be as outstanding or superior to The Shield, but I do think that it will be very very good and definitely the best new show this season.
