Allie Weller-Executive Director of Elonthon

4/17/2012

Her name is Allie Weller, and you’d be surprised to find out how awesome and dedicated this Junior Political Science major is! Dance marathons are her specialty and she puts her love of dance to work as the Executive Director of ElonThon!, Elon’s 24 hour dance marathon for Children’s Miracle Network!

Have you taken part in any Elon experiences that have stood out to you?
Study abroad was by far my favorite! I went to Greece last year and loved it, it was beautiful there and I'd do anything to go back!

Step Outside the Bubble

3/7/2012

New experiences are waiting around every corner in college. Going outside your comfort zone and stepping away from what you know can lead to some of the most memorable and awesome experiences in life. This past weekend, I was able to do two things that i NEVER thought I would be doing, and it expanded my horizons greatly!

Last Friday, I had the chance to go to a metal concert. Now I have listened to some metal music before, and to be honest; it was never completely my cup of tea. Needless to say, I was very surprised by my reaction to the concert: I LOVED IT! I was one of maybe 6 girls in a group of about 40, and I still had a blast! The music was loud and though at times it became a tad intense, it was genuinely fun! Being a big music fan, I can appreciate when people have talent, and the guys of the band Wake Leviathan definitely do! (Not to mention they have a fantastic name) I also wound up running into friends I didn't expect to see there, and it made me realize that you never really know what can interest you until you try it out! I will definitely be going back for another of their concerts!

Cultural Creativity: Elon’s Cultural Calendar

Cultural Creativity: Elon’s Cultural Calendar

Each semester, we all receive Elon’s Cultural Calendar in the Mail Center. Inside its pages, we find all the cultural events on campus for the semester, required by many classes in an effort to improve the culture of Elon’s students. We hear about all the big events, such as the spring convocation with Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient.

Christmas in....July?

12/13/2011

I love the holiday season. From Halloween until January 1 is truly is the most wonderful time of the year with the decorations, family and friends getting together and the overall good mood it puts people in. But I have to say that I am not a fan of how the holiday season I love so much starts earlier and earlier each year.

November 1st, 2011: I walk into the local Target, eager to get whatever leftover Halloween candy wasn't bought during the season. I was looking forward to bargains on Halloween decorations and major discounts on the candy! But as I rounded the corner, I discovered something rather upsetting.

The entire Halloween display was gone!  In its place stood a Christmas tree! In the beginning of November!

This always makes me sad, when people completely bypass the lovely months of autumn to go straight to from early fall to a winter wonderland. It not only forces us to feel stressed about Christmas shopping earlier, but it also makes the year go by so much faster!

I am faithful to the holidays. I believe they should all get a grace period after they end so that we can back off slowly and then transition to the next. Unfortunately, I am discovering that I am one of few people like this.

I look to the Thanksgiving Day Parade as the true indicator of the start of the holiday season. Give Thanksgiving its chance to have the spotlight and embrace friends, family and food. Then the Christmas songs can start on the radio and decorations can begin toslowly appear. This is the ideal. Santa Claus is at the end of the parade for a reason – to signal that the holiday season has officially arrived!

Heels, Heels, Heels

12/1/2011

Heels. They’re a girl's best friend, her go-to accessory, and her worst nightmare. Painful, but so ridiculously beautiful that we suffer through wearing them – beauty is pain after all, right?

Busiest Collegiette at Elon-Jasmine Whaley

11/2/2011

The Busiest and Most Dedicated Collegiette™ you will ever meet: Jasmine Whaley!

What is your name, year and Majors/Minors?
My name is Jasmine Whaley. I’m a Junior Political Science and International Studies majors with Religious Studies and Middle Eastern Studies minors.

Have you taken part in any Elon experiences that have stood out to you?
Yes! Freshman year during quiet hours for finals, my roommates and I had a water gun fight and it was the most epic thing I have ever done in my life. The guys across the hall had a catapult and the sprinklers came on and it was a really great way to de-stress.

What activities are you involved with at Elon?
I am the President of Better Together, a Multicultural Ambassador, the intern for Interfaith Engagement at the Truitt Center, a SMART mentor, and sweetheart for Phi Beta Sigma.

What is Better Together?
Better Together is an interfaith organization that is aimed at promoting mutual understanding and respect for people of diverse religious and non-religious backgrounds through community service and social justice initiatives.

What is in the future for Better Together?
I hope that it can have a real impact on the way people talk about religion and the way they think about it as not necessarily something that shouldn’t be talked about and that divides people. It is something that can unite, and I think we are just trying to change the atmosphere and the conversations around religion on campus.

What do you like to do during the free time you find?

Fast Forward and Rewind

10/20/2011

Looking at the Course Catalogue for Spring Term the other day, I found myself realizing just how little time I have left at Elon. Fall semester Junior year may seem like eons away from the dreaded “real world”, but it’s only a short stop away. Seeing your life planned out on paper is a terrifying thing. I know people graduating this year that are the same age as me. Is that normal? What’s my next step? All these questions have popped into my mind as of late, and I can’t seem to shake them.

I also am meeting new people every day. I have found myself amongst the company of people who are almost four years younger than me, and that shocks me. Suddenly, I am the oldest person in the room and the person with the most life experience. I have never felt of myself as old, but talking to a 17 year old can feel like there are light-years between us. They don’t know of some things that I have grown up with (Newsies, anyone?) and I don’t understand some things that they grew up with (I will NEVER understand Justin Bieber).

Is this maturity? I hope not, because I still have a lot more goofing off to do! I still feel like I am that freshman, still getting used to how things go in college. Just when you think you get the hang of things, it all changes and it’s time to leave. Sophomore year is when you really start to get a handle on life. Junior year comes crashing down on you when you realize that you probably will never figure things out enough to understand completely.

New Halloween Costumes for 2011

10/6/2011

As any collegiette™who has seen “Mean Girls” knows, “Halloween is the one day a year that a girl can dress like a total slut and no one can say anything bad about her.” But Her Campus collegiettes™know that it’s not all about looking like something you aren’t on Halloween! Expressing yourself in a fun and unique way is the best way to get noticed in the right ways during the Halloween season. It’s time to throw out the clichéd costumes and try out something new and creative for a Halloween costume this year!

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Why not be Audrey this Halloween?  Take a leaf out of her book by being classy and stylish for the night and you’ll stand out in a crowd for all the right reasons! You can get a simple little black dress like the one above at a local thrift store and a tiara and pearls at the Spirit Halloween store by YoZone in the Holly Hill Mall.

The Mad Hatter

Aren’t we all a little mad sometimes? Try a fun feminine take on the classic character and have a ball on Halloween! You can buy the costume at Spirit Halloween or it would be easy to get a hat from Target and make your own version of this fun outfit. You would get noticed not only for your costume, but also for your fearless sense of style.

Getting in Shape Intellectually and Mentally

9/13/2011

It’s that time of year Collegiates! Back to the pencils, books, and syllabi of college life! For those of you who are first year students, welcome! These will be some of the best years of your life, and definitely the most fun! Sadly, college is not all fun and games, so getting into the right frame of mind is essential for scholastic success. Here are some ideas for getting back to school right!

Have a planner!
The planners that you are given during Freshman Orientation can help you manage your school and social lives easily. Once you receive your syllabus for each class, write down all of the important dates such as midterms, finals, and when papers are due. This will save you from leaving things until the last minute, and help you keep in mind how much work you have to do!

Elon Sophomore Emily Merlin suggests making a “To Do” List, “so that the last thing you see before you leave is a reminder of goals, NOT a distraction of clutter.” Getting organized is the first step to thinking clearly!

Browse through your textbooks
If you want to gauge how much you will understand in a class, the first place you should look is in your textbook! Is it easily readable? If it isn’t, then odds are you will need to put more effort into that class. It is sometimes a good idea to look through them just to get an idea of the things that will be covered in class.

Another way of preparing for school is by going through your previous years’ class notes! Junior Elizabeth Floyd keeps all of hers. “ I reorganize important past notes that are relevant to my current classes.” Doing this will refresh your memory on what you have already learned, and what you have had trouble on in the past.
