Ombre Everything

4/30/2012

By now you’ve probably heard the word “ombre” buzzing around the fashion and beauty world, but what does the word actually mean? In French, une ombre means shadow or shade, so it makes sense that in fashion and beauty the word is used to describe a gradual lightening or darkening. Here are some of our favorite ombre looks we found on Pinterest! Which trend do you want to try this summer?

Of course, the ever-popular ombre hair:

4 Apps Every Collegiette Should Have On Her Phone

4/16/2012

As much as we hate to admit it, our phone is constantly attached to our hands. Ever since Apple revolutionized the idea of apps, our phones became our personal assistant, physical trainer, healthcare doctor, teacher and mom – all in one. While it’s tempting to fill up our phones with apps like Angry Birds, Draw Something and Temple Run, there’s four FREE apps that every collegiette should have that’ll make life just a little easier. Thank you, modern technology.

My Days – Period & Ovulation Calendar: Ever wondered when your next period was coming but couldn’t remember when your last period was? My Days makes it really easy to keep track of your periods and even when to expect your next one. It’s a lifesaver knowing when to expect a period during a major event or vacation.

Sincerely Ink Cards: How do our moms always know when to send greeting cards so they reach people in time? With Sincerely Ink Cards, you too can send beautiful greeting cards directly to your loved ones straight from your phone. For only $1.99, the app sends a real greeting card through the good old postal system in as little as two clicks. The result? A beautiful greeting card personalized with your photo and personal message for every major holiday, or just to say thank you or congrats.

Miniskirts Banned?!

4/13/2012

Somewhere in Indonesia a teenage girl is crying.

Because of a new ban against miniskirts proposed by Indonesia’s religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali, miniskirts may now be considered as “pornographic” within the country. Ali heads up the country’s anti-porn taskforce and told reporters last week that the taskforce is in the process of developing criteria to define something as pornographic, one of which includes skirts above the knee.

It’s a head-scratcher, for sure. But Indonesia isn’t the first country to propose such a rule. In 2010, the small seaside town of Castellammare Di Stabia in Italy proposed a miniskirt ban (along with low slung jeans) to promote higher social standards. And in the same year, Chile tried to place a ban on public employees from wearing miniskirts and exposing their shoulders until too many angry ladies protested to the governor.

Even in the United States, a San Jose high school told their cheerleading team last year that they were no longer allowed to wear their cheerleading skirts to school. Instead, the squad was asked to cover up their high hemlines by wearing sweatpants underneath.

Spring Cleaning: Un-cluttering and De-stressing

4/2/2012

Just around the start of March we start feeling a little restless. Midterms are over, the temps are getting warmer and it’s starting to stay lighter out for longer (thank you, Daylight Savings Time). As it becomes increasingly harder to focus, this might be the most opportune time to finally clear some space both physically and mentally. Cleaning can be relaxing, even therapeutic, and it can sure make us feel like new again.

If you have 30 minutes…
The easiest way to breathe a sigh of relief and feel somewhat organized without having a load of time on your hands is organizing your digital space. Clearing out your email inbox, deleting old files and categorizing new ones can help you stay on track for the remainder of the semester and will seriously make you feel so much better once your inbox is down from 431 unread emails and when you can actually see your desktop again.

If you have two hours…
Haven’t seen your bedroom floor in two months? Instead of doing the usual pick-it-up-and-throw-it-in-the-closet routine, consider going through your clothes and getting rid of the items you no longer wear. Places like Buffalo Exchange, Crossroads and local consignment shops will actually pay you for your gently used clothes, especially if it’s in season and still in style. Whatever these stores don’t buy, make sure to drop by the nearest donation center on your way home or hold a clothing swap with your friends!

Registering for Classes: Dos and Don'ts

3/12/2012

The difference between having a successful semester and a semester where you’re sort of just hanging on for dear life all boils down to one thing: early preparation. It might seem obvious, but registering for classes takes some finesse to create just the perfect schedule for the next semester. When it comes time to register for new courses, doing the legwork early on can really pay off in the end.

Do meet with your advisor before you register for classes. If you have a question or are worried about your requirements, the best person to help you is your college advisor.

Don’t wait until the last minute to check out the course catalog. Planning out your schedule before registration can give you some time to visualize what your semester will look like.

Do check out RateMyProfessors.com for reviews on instructors and courses left by other students.

Don’t shy away from emailing a potential instructor. Are you wondering about particular topics being covered? Sometimes a professor can give you more of an idea if the course will be the right fit for you than the course description can say in a sentence or two.

Do challenge yourself. Mixing difficult courses with fun courses, like yoga and Urban Anthropology, can help balance out your semester (and your mind).

6 Songs That'll Help You Get Through Midterms

2/28/2012

Now that the Oscars are over, it’s time to face reality. With a barrage of exams, papers and projects due in the upcoming weeks, the only way we know how to cope with the onslaught of extra stress and less sleep is through music. Whether you’re feeling lethargic or restless, here are some tunes that’ll (hopefully) make midterms a little more tolerable.

If you’re feeling tired…
Despite the title of this song, the remixed version of Sleepyhead by Passion Pit (Daze Remix) is enough to keep us going through our three-hour night classes. Why did we think a 6:30 p.m. science lab was a good idea, again?

If you’re feeling emotional…
If you’re feeling like you want to scream, let Florence Welch and Benny Benassi drown everything else out with a remixed version of an oldie but goodie, Florence + the Machine’s Shake It Out. We won’t judge if you want to belt along with Welch.

Transitioning from Winter to Spring: Chicago-style

2/21/2012

Spring in Chicago means it’s still cold but with the mildly warm weather we’ve been experiencing lately, it’s hard not to notice that everyone’s busting out "springier" clothes (we’re loving brightly colored denim, pretty chiffons and platform sandals!). Even though it’s not quite March yet, we’ve already caught spring fever. It might be a bit premature for Chicago, but even a couple months of winter have us pining for spring. Here are a few easy ways to start transitioning without putting your winter clothes away just yet!

Beauty – Changing your beauty routine can help you get in the mood for a new season, whether it’s switching out your winter rotation of brown and navy for pretty pastels and chic corals, like Essie’s latest collection, to ditching ultra-moisturizing non-scented lotions for a lighter (and fresher smelling) daily moisturizer with SPF.

5 Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day During the Weekday

2/13/2012

Here’s the deal about Valentine’s Day: Valentine’s Day only falls during the weekend every seven years. That means, more often than not, we’re stuck trying to cram in a romantic dinner either the weekend before or the weekend of Valentine’s Day. How unauthentic is that? So maybe this year you actually want to celebrate Valentine’s Day, that is, Tuesday, February 14th. Is it possible to celebrate the most romantic day of the year on a school night? Read on!

THINGS WE LOVE: Online Sample Sale Sites

2/7/2012

It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without online shopping, and now it’s even harder to imagine what online shopping would be like without sample sale sites. As any collegiette™ knows, getting a fabulous deal is equivalent to a combination of an endorphin rush mixed with a surge of adrenaline. It’s like finding THAT pair of Sam Edelman’s you’ve been wanting all season for 75% off at Nordstrom Rack, but with an online sample sale, you luckily don’t have to paw through aisles of chaos.

So here’s how sample sale sites work: sample sale sites are usually invite-only, but for most sites you can request an invitation. Usually you’ll receive them within a couple of days, but if you know a friend who’s a member have her send you an invitation if she can to speed up the process. These sites only sell certain products from high-end labels and at a heavily discounted price. So if you’ve got your eye on a new pair of J Brand jeans, you can get them up to 70% off sometimes. The catch? Most sales are timed, meaning you only have 24 to 48 hours to snag what you want, unless they sell out since most sites only carry a limited amount of inventory. But the best part is that most sites have new sales from different labels every day.

There are a ton of sample sale sites, but here our four sites that every collegiette™ should bookmark!

Gilt Groupe
What You’ll Find: Designer and luxury sample sales for women, men, home and even city deals to spas, restaurants and local boutiques.
What We Love: There’s an app for that! “Gilt on the Go” helps us shop quickly and never miss a deal.
