5 Easy Ways to Satisfy Your Sweetooth

6/1/2012

One of the best things about spring quarter in Davis, besides Picnic Day and Whole Earth Festival, is the annual weekend of drunken debauchery, otherwise known as houseboats.

For those who attend houseboats, this means three things: sunshine, booze, and bikinis. That being said, Her Campus has some easy ways for you to keep your bikini body without sweating away endlessly at the gym. Instead, we suggest finding a different way to feed your sweet tooth, one that will keep you happy and looking ready for when the cameras start flashing.

1) Frozen Yogurt, Please *without all the fixins’:
Some people say that Davis is the capital of biking, but I think most residents will agree that the capital of biking ties nicely with a title as the capital of frozen yogurt. Instead of buying the pint of Ben and Jerry’s or going to one-dollar scoop at Baskin Robins go for a plain frozen yogurt. As a Davis resident we have so many different places to get frozen yogurt and if you take away all the toppings you can prevent an extra weight gain! Yogurt is known to help regulate the digestive system and you can get your dose of calcium by indulging!

Five Television Shows That Won't Be Back This Fall

5/23/2012

As college students, we get to call most, if not all, of the shots when it comes to our daily routines. We can choose to stay up all night, or go to bed. We can choose to skip class, to go to that concert, or that baseball game. For the first time in many of our lives, we can veg out on the couch watching television without our parents bickering endless demands to “do your homework”, or “help your sister with the dishes.” No more, the freedom to veg out is ours.

This year I made a new years resolution to not watch as much television – more specifically I told myself no new shows, just watch the ones you already watch and that will be fine. My friendly DVR makes it easy to fast forward and save time, but I broke the resolution just as easily as I made it. Since the New Year began I can count on almost all ten fingers the new shows I have started watching. But HEY, I deserve it. I’m a hard working college student. Right? Right. Each week my DVR paints a colorful picture of the various networks competing for my attention.

Here’s a list of shows that WON’T be making it back next season:

1) Pan Am – ABC
As glamorous as Leonardo Dicaprio made the stewardess’ look in Catch Me If You Can, that’s about all they were, glamorous. The not so entertaining and hard to hook series lasted 14 episodes.

A Recap on Ron Paul's Visit To Davis

5/7/2012

Many of us were taught, from a young age, to take advantage of any opportunity that could further our knowledge and strengthen our beliefs.

As we grow, we are likely to be presented with more freedom to choose which paths we will take, who we will follow, and who/what we will leave behind. This is all part of the process of becoming an individual- a unique identity with personal beliefs, opinions, characteristics and personality.

Much of who we are is defined by what we believe in and how we believe the world should work. In plain terms, political beliefs, for many, are a defining factor in our identity.

Politics, especially those concerning the distribution of power, is a widely talked about and debated issue in our nation, as well as on this campus. As young voters, politicians make it a point to appeal to our needs with the hope that they can count on our vote now and forevermore.

This past week the Davis community welcomed candidate Ron Paul to speak at the university campus on behalf of the Youth for Ron Paul chapter here at UC Davis. For many attendees (including myself) this was the first time they had seen a politician speak, let alone a running candidate for the presidential race.

As a registered democrat, I jumped on the opportunity to see Ron Paul. Many of my friends thought it weird that I, a strong democrat would want to hear a Libertarian speak. I brushed off the shaking heads and laughs because I saw this as an opportunity to learn, and learn I did.

6 Ways to Speed Up Your Metabolism

5/1/2012

We all have the friend that can eat a whole carton of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and not gain a pound, but the spoonful we put into our mouth goes straight to our love handles, thighs, hips or all the above. What it all comes back to is our metabolism. "The process of metabolism establishes the rate at which we burn our calories and, ultimately, how quickly we gain weight or  how easily we lose it," says Robert Yanagisawa, MD, director of the Medically Supervised Weight Management Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. The way in which we treat our bodies can
affect our metabolism. Yes, it has to do with genes but there are easy ways to speed up our metabolism so that we can be a part of the healthy body we long for. Here are 6 tips we have to make sure that you stay healthy, happy and feeling good about your body.

1) Eat breakfast

You’ve heard it from your mother, your father, your doctor, your teacher, and now we’re here to tell you again just how important breakfast is to your day - and your metabolism. Giving you energy for the day allows your body to recognize where it can spend energy and so on. After sleeping for hours your body lowers your metabolism when it doesn’t get food, so it’s easy to say eating in the morning is the best thing!

2) Spice it up:

Spicy food is not only a tasty but it can help you with your metabolism as well. Spicy foods have chemical compounds help boost your metabolism and speed up the rate of burning fat. Eating a dish with red or green chilies, or adding cayenne pepper are little steps that you can take to make your metabolism bump itself up.

3) Pack on Protein:

Getting the Internship

4/18/2012

The internship search, like the job search, can be endlessly exhausting. To underestimate the amount of time, effort, and self motivation internship searching takes is also foolish. I know this better than anyone else. In the past year i have interned at 5 different places - some simultaneously, others not. Kinda makes your head spin doesn’t it? No more so than mine.

However, these internships were easy to snag. Living in the small town of Davis means competition is less likely to bite you in the butt. We have opportunities thrown our way; through message boards, tabling on the quad, emails from our departments, and not to mention the handy college and career center. But outside of Davis I have found that the search is not so easy. It doesn’t happen through a one time interview or a job posting on aggie job links. I decided last summer that this summer I would set myself up for a new challenge. Instead of staying in Davis or heading home to San Francisco to get an internship, I would head to the the big apple, the glory that is New York City. It wouldn’t be just any internship - I knew I wanted a fashion internship. With this in mind I knew that the road ahead would be tricky. I knew i had to plan - but for what exactly, I wasn't sure.

After four months of endless searches, cover letters, phone calls, emails and anxiety, I got offered not one, but two internships in New York City. I figure because there is still time to get an internship I could offer some advice on the subject matter!

My advice is simple for snagging your dream internship. It’s simple create your own opportunities.

Bloom: Sustaining the Lifestyle SFA Fashion Show

3/22/2012

There are so many things to look forward to in the spring. We have sunshine, the rec pool, picnic day, whole earth festival, and more. Events on campus are always coming up and one that shouldn't be missed is this year’s fashion show. The Student Fashion Association is hosting their annual fashion show on Friday April 13 at 7pm. The Show will take place in the ARC Ballroom and is the result of months of planning, preparation of our peers in the club.

The theme centers around sustainability - something everyone of our readers can be excited about. The official title is "Bloom: Sustaining the Lifestyle" and the inspiration came from a growing sense of environmentalism and sustainability, not just within the club, but on a societal level. Our campus is actually one of the top 10 greenest college campuses in the nation, so it's definitely part of the collective mindset.

This theme can mean making garments out of recycled or sustainable materials, or it could also have a more personal meaning for a designer. Perhaps this could translate into supporting a small town like Davis by shopping at local businesses, thus helping to sustain our community. The club is composed of 25-30 members who have been working on the show week after week.

Funding for the fashion show is all student based. SFA has sold handmade Hershey kisses roses and lollipops shaped as flowers, teddy bears, and hearts for their Valentine's day fundraiser. With the help of Sodexo, the group plans to host more fundraising to help with the cost of designers, models, fabric, and renting the location. Because the event doesn’t have any sponsors, this a great way for students in the community, especially those interested in the arts and in fashion to give back and help the textiles and design major.

Mix Me Some Drinks

3/7/2012

Part of being in college means experiencing the nightlife – a.k.a, partying and drinking. I think it’s fair enough to say that we have all had our fair share of morning, afternoon, and, for some of us, even evening hangovers. The endless shots and cheap beers leave our stomachs aching and empty by the end of the night.

While these are nights to never forget, I cant help but feeling like its getting old. Taking shot after shot to get drunk works – I think we all know that. I remember coming in as freshmen when my sister was a junior and she would always say, “We can’t take shots anymore, who wants a mixed drink?” Those words once seemed strange but now I would, and do, give anything to get the buzz from a mixed drink over the shots. So here’s to recommending some mixed drinks that taste better, make the feeling last longer, and get you buzzed quicker.

ASUCD Election Results

2/28/2012
Friday, the winners of the 2012 ASUCD Presidential and Senatorial election were announced. For many people, the word election has both a negative and positive association. Here at UC Davis, we pride ourselves in peaceful and professional campaigning. This year’s election was among the most competitive the University has seen in years. With more then 14 senate candidates running for 6 spots (as opposed tot he last where it was 7 candidates running for 6 spots) and with experience high for both presidential and vice presidential teams, the race was bound to be competitive and nerve racking.

Despite the different platforms amongst the senators and presidents one thing remains common: the hope and dedication to a better tomorrow for UC Davis.

Here are the winners of the ASUCD 2012 election and some of their platforms.

How to Get Organized and STAY Organized!

2/13/2012

Lately, all I’ve been doing is running around – mainly from home to the library and back again – but needless to say, I keep asking myself the same questions: where did I put that book? When was the last time I checked my email?  Do I have homework due tomorrow? When am I going to study for this test? And so on….

As I stomp the ground of my apartment to look for that one extra highlighter I lost or the extra set of flashcards I misplaced, I keep telling myself and hearing everyone around me say: the key to success is organization. Well, if that’s the case, then I’m guessing we could all use a few tips on how to stay organized and survive the hell in which we are now living --- WINTER QUARTER.

Plan ahead:
