Your Hair This Spring, Dry Clean Only!

3/19/2013

Ever since dry shampoo appeared on the market a few years ago I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect one. In high school, I spent long hours at school in rehearsals (RIP my Broadway dreams) and always wanted something that would remove all the dirt and oil build up in my hair quickly and efficiently.

Now I spend long hours in the library, and I still haven’t been able to find a dry shampoo that does what it says it’s going to do. My hair always ends up looking greasier than it did before. So greasy that I could slick it back, throw on a leather jacket and pretend I’m singing Grease Lightning along side John Travolta.

I had almost given up on dry shampoo when I heard about Naturelle Biotera Invisible Dry  Shampoo. It combines science and nature to replenish your hair, and give it the strength, protection and moisture it deserves.

At first I was a little skeptical to try it. I was on campus and was certain that after using it I was going to have to take the walk of shame to my car so I could go home and wash my hair. Other dry shampoos usually require you to massage foam into your scalp that is anything but dry, causing my Grease Lightning-esque look.

But Biotera Dry Shampoo comes in an aerosol can, allowing you to spray it directly onto your scalp without any added moisture. It doesn’t require any water, and it effectively absorbed all of the oil that was weighing my hair down.

I have particularly short hair, but the collegiettes at Her Campus UCF had no complaints either and they raved at how easy it was to use. Just shake, spray 8-12 inches away from your scalp and comb your hair with your fingers. It won’t leave any white residue behind which is perfect for touching up your style in-between washing.

The Launch of Something Iconic

1/14/2013

“Iconic” was born out of one student’s passion for fashion. Matt Fultz was dissatisfied with the lack of fashion outlets at UCF, so he and a friend came up with Iconic.

Iconic will be fashion central for Her Campus UCF, featuring fashion blogs, DIY projects and much more. In addition to having weekly posts on Her Campus UCF, the new branch of the magazine will host events to discuss fashion-focused topics and to give our readers a chance to participate in the DIY projects they see on the front page of HCUCF.

Everyone at HCUCF is excited about this new partnership, and we are looking forward to a fashion-filled semester. Stay tuned for the launch of this new fashion section of the magazine you already love, and get ready for more stylish collegiettes! Check out Iconic’s social media sites to get your fashion fix: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram: @IconicAtUCF.

Katie Whitehead '12

12/6/2012

This week, we have a Campus Cutie that everyone here at HCUCF is sure to miss. Katie Whitehead, our Vice President, is graduating this semester. I asked Katie what her favorite HC and UCF memories were and to provide some tips for collegiettes entering their last semester.

What are you most excited about now that you are a college graduate?

I'm most excited to take a little break and to go home to see family. I'm also really excited about exploring job options and seeing what adventures are out there for me to try next. (Oprah and IndyCar- I'm coming for you.)

What was your favorite part about your senior year of college?

It was actually pretty awesome to use all the skills I have learned over the last four years in my internship and capstone class. To see everything you've worked so hard on come together is really rewarding, especially to walk away with a portfolio to take on interviews.

What was your favorite HCUCF moment this year?

My favorite moment this year was when the entire Her Campus UCF team went bowling. It was so much fun and I got to talk with everyone on the team in a totally different setting.  The Walk to End Alzheimer's was also a really great day with the team!

What is your favorite memory from your years at UCF?

Get Ready For Finals With SGA

12/2/2012

As finals week approaches, all of us here at UCF are beginning to load up on energy drinks and junk food. Before you begin spending countless hours in the library, make sure your mind is ready to be filled with information.  This year, SGA is hosting The Knight Before Finals on Monday, December 3rd from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Students are invited to join the UCF Counseling Center at the Reflection Pond and Flame of Hope as they guide students through the yoga breathing technique of “Prayanama.”

Following your yoga session, head into the library for Kram for the Exam: Finals Edition. The library will be open until 3:00 a.m., giving you plenty of time to study for your first final. Bring your UCF ID to grab some free food, t-shirts, and study supplies.

Bring Fall to Florida With These 10 Essentials

10/18/2012

Being from the north, the one thing I hate about Florida is the lack of seasons. I miss the cool chill in the air. I miss the crunch of brightly colored leaves under my feet. I miss the smell of the fireplace. I stare longingly at the tweed pea coat in the back of my closet, hoping that one day I might wake up and it will miraculously be 40 degrees outside.

Nonetheless, I decided to go to school in the sunshine state and I am willing to give all that up to be able to drive 30 minutes to the beach. I still miss the changing seasons but it isn’t impossible to bring fall charm to Florida. Here I share with you my 10 essentials that will make you fall in love with this season.

Cinnamon Broomstick
You can’t walk into any Publix without the smell of cinnamon pummeling you in the face. That’s because of The One & Only ORIGINAL Cinnamon Broom. These tiny wooden brooms made with pure cinnamon oil will fill your apartment or dorm room with the cozy scent of cinnamon. I’ve had mine for about two and a half weeks and I can still smell it every time I walk in the door.

Glade® Maple Pumpkin Candle
If the smell of cinnamon isn’t your thing, this candle will engulf your room in the smell of pumpkin pie. I picked one of these up at Target the other day and it does not disappoint. The candle burns around thirty hours, and your roommates are sure to appreciate your purchase. It can be the perfect substitution or complement to your cinnamon broom!

Get To Class Faster on a Kickboard Scooter!

9/18/2012

After weeks of anxiously waiting, HC UCF received two Kickboard Campus Scooters! As I sat through my morning classes I checked my phone constantly, waiting for the email from my apartment complex that would inform me that my new form of transportation had arrived. The UPS guy did not disappoint: At noon I received the message and sped home to inspect our new Kickboard Scooters.

When you hear “scooter,” an image pops into your mind of the tiny, metal scooters we played with in the 90s. However, Kickboard Scooters are designed with the collegietteTM in mind. Kickboard USA is the U.S. distributor for the Swiss company Micro Mobility. They are a small, fun, and innovative company dedicated to high-quality products and outstanding customer service. Kickboard Scooters are foldable and lightweight – perfect for carrying into class or up to your dorm room. The scooters are less cumbersome than a bike. They don’t have to be locked up and are easily maneuvered through large crowds. They have a modern looking design that has sleek and sophisticated looking features. CollegiettesTM will be able to get to class faster than ever and look amazing while doing it.

He’s Not Just The Real UCF Guy

3/20/2012

Matt Paule is not only our new Real UCF Guy. Along with writing for Her Campus at UCF, writing for The Odyssey, and representing a plethora of companies, he is a stand-up comedian. He’s performed at the Gotham Comedy club in Times Square, in Saint Louis, Kansas City, Pensacola, Miami, and he performs locally here in Orlando. When you’re not reading his articles, check him out at one of his shows!

Q: What made you want to become a comedian?
A: I was always that kid in class that would act up every single day and get in trouble with the teacher. But it was always hard for the principal to write me up whenever he was laughing from what he heard I did.

Q: What comedians inspire you?
A: Jerry Seinfeld is easily my favorite. He literally is the best in the business. Also, I can never keep a straight face whenever I hear Harland Williams tell a joke.

Q: What steps are you going to have to take in the future to be a successful comedian?
A: UCF doesn't exactly have classes that specialize in punch lines, but the best way to get better is to just keep telling jokes. I've attended classes at The American Institute of Comedy in Times Square that really helped me upgrade to bigger venues.

Jeff McDonald ’14

2/6/2012

Low Key and Easygoing

Name: Jeff McDonald

Relationship Status: Single

Major: Marketing Major – Psychology Minor

What do you want to do after you graduate? I would like to be working for a public advertising firm developing consumer advertisements. Ultimately I would want to represent a company that would be developing commercials you would see on a daily basis.

What do you do in your free time? Play guitar, longboard, go to class, hang out with friends, not much different than any other 20-year-old college student. I go to a lot of concerts. I just recently saw Passafire at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg.

Where would be the perfect location for a date? It should be spontaneous. Going out to eat and stuff is nice, but it depends on the person. Ultimately, I would let them decide if I had that option, so I could see what they’re about. I’m not the type of person to make solid plans. I go with the flow.

What do you look for in a girl? They have to have a sense of humor and not be too wound up. I’m pretty laid back and don’t really have a set type, I can appreciate all kind of females.

Is there anything that you absolutely cannot stand when out on a date? I can’t stand people who excessively go on their phone because they’re too nervous to carry on a conversation. I hate sitting there with someone who can’t talk to me.

What do you notice first about a girl? Eyes, smile, and confidence level.

What Not to Wear to Class

1/27/2012

The first few weeks of this semester have been rough for practically everyone. Winter break went by so fast, and many of us are still imagining ourselves curled up in a warm blanket with our most comfortable clothes on. Unfortunately, many of our peers have been clinging to the memory of winter break by wearing their favorite sweatpants to campus. Last semester I wrote about where to find appropriate Monday morning attire, but the need has arisen to restate how ridiculous you all look.

I have been witnessing a plethora of people wearing inappropriate sweats to campus. However, many students have given up their sweatpants for actual clothing that somehow is STILL inappropriate. I have been keeping an eye out for the most ridiculous trends this week, and I have discovered five terrible trends, which you hopefully learn to avoid.

Number One: Wear Actual Clothing

Over the past few weeks I have come across individuals who thought that it was a good idea to leave their living quarters wearing items that weren’t real clothes. I have heard rumors that there is an individual at UCF that wears a towel to class. I have witnessed students walking around campus shoeless.  I have, unfortunately, had to witness some people wearing clothes that might also constitute as underwear. While I don’t discredit you for wearing or not wearing something for a specific purpose, there is also a time and place for everything. And a college campus is hardly the place to decide to go commando for the day.

Number Two: A T-Shirt Plastered with Logos
