Coachella and Tupac’s Hologram Performance: Creepy or Cool?

4/23/2012

Coachella, an annual three-day music and arts festival held in Indio, California, is famous for its showcase of both up-and-coming and headlining bands and artists.  This year, however, they added a new sort of artist to the mix.

The crowd was in for a treat this year, receiving a performance from legendary rap artist Tupac Shakur, who passed away in 1996.  No, Tupac (unfortunately) has not been in hiding and just decided to come out and surprise us.

Instead, he is being remembered and celebrated through a special kind of performance: a hologram.  During a performance by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, a hologram of the deceased rapper appeared on stage, and performed “Hail Mary” and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” before disappearing into thin air.

I, personally, viewed the performance on YouTube, and it looked eerily real to me.  Tupac was moving around the stage smoothly, rapping alongside Snoop like the real thing.  Except it obviously was not the real Tupac, which I’m guessing may have taken some members in the audience a couple minutes to digest, if what I’ve heard about the atmosphere at Coachella has any truth to it.

So my question is this: was it too much to “bring Tupac back” to perform, or was it an awesome way to pay tribute and keep his memory and music alive?  I’m going with the latter, but some people have taken to the Internet to express their discomfort with the performance, saying Tupac should be able to just “rest in peace.”

The Trayvon Martin Case: Using the Power of Social Media for Good

4/5/2012

The tragic story of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin’s death has left hundreds of thousands of people across the United States wanting answers.  Cases like this are always difficult, because one side of the story will never be told.

All the pieces left have been tirelessly researched- the 911 calls have been analyzed, debated and edited and the witnesses questioned.  Sadly, in cases such as Trayvon’s, the world may never receive the answers they are longing for.

But as I follow this case, I can conclude at least one thing is or certain. This story really mattered to people.  It got people talking. Trayvon’s case showed the power of spreading a message across social media, and how the death of a 17-year-old boy from Florida can reach millions of people across the nation.

If not for social media sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, would even half as many people know Trayvon’s story?  Social media is a powerful tool, and when used for good, such as spreading awareness and promoting justice, or taking action toward finding answers, there are limitless possibilities to what we as individuals can come together and accomplish.

Here are some examples of the high profile people in our society Trayvon’s story has reached, and how they joined the movement of “Hoodies Up” to spread awareness of Trayvon’s story.

5 Fun Things Spring Quarter Brings

3/27/2012

It’s here—the most wonderful time of the year.  No, I’m not talking about Christmas; I’m talking about Spring Quarter at Ohio State!  The time of the year when you ease some GECs into your schedule, make sure you have Fridays free (if you can) and appreciate the long walks to class because it means stopping in the Oval between!
Spring Quarter is an amazing 10 weeks at Ohio State, and it lifts us all out of the winter quarter blues and gives us hope for sweet summertime.  Everyone on campus is magically a lot friendly than they were Winter Quarter; students are outside studying, getting ice cream cones at Mirror Lake Creamery and shooting hoops by JO South.
Even off-campus changes, where you will find everyone either tanning in their front yards or on their roofs.  Oh, and if you live way far off-campus (say in Olentangy Commons) you even get to take a dip in the pool!
Allow me to remind you what you have to look forward to in the near future!
1.     Oval Beach
Okay, so it’s not really a beach, but who likes sand anyways?  There is really nothing better than Oval Beach on a perfect 70-75 degree sunny day.  Music, beach towels, bathing suits, footballs, Frisbees, dogs…what’s not to love?  It is one of the places that makes Ohio State unique from every other college, and brings students together.
2.     Greek Week

Would You Rather: “American Idol” vs. “The Voice” Edition

3/2/2012

If you tune into primetime TV, you are most likely going to encounter one of three things: 26 women fighting to date one man (The Bachelor), a popular sitcom, or a singing competition.  Here in America, we really, really love our singing competitions—and it’s no different on OSU's campus.

The love affair started 10 years ago, when we met Kelly Clarkson for the first time in season one of American Idol.  Kelly is still around today, but things have certainly changed in the lineup of AI; now, a new show has come along that promises to give AI some competition of its own.

American Idol:

For the past decade, the OG of all talent competitions here in America has undoubtedly been American Idol.  The majority of the shows’ success is thanks to the judges’ table.  The famous trio, Randy, Paula and Simon, gained the love of millions in America and were together for eight seasons (oh, and we can’t forget about host Ryan Seacrest!).  We have AI to thank for giving us some of our favorite artists, including Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks and Jennifer Hudson.  But, somewhere along the way, things changed.

Personally, I think AI screwed up by changing up the judges and adding Kara DioGuardi to the panel during season eight.  Paula left the show after that season ended, and at the end of the next season, Simon followed.  Now, the judges’ panel is made up of Randy, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.  Maybe going back to a three person panel can bring the show back to its original feel, but nothing will ever truly compare to the chemistry between the original Idol judges.

Worth Your Follow? Profiling the Popular "Ohio State Problems" Twitter Accounts

2/7/2012

These days, everyone and their dog has a Twitter (literally, I’ve seen dog Twitter pages.  Who cares that you just ate a biscuit?  Come on.) and it seems like the same old jokes and hashtags keep reappearing on my timeline.  Now, I try to use my Twitter for keeping up with what’s going on in the world and to network, but even I can appreciate when there’s a Twitter page that brings actual comic relief to my life.

Running on the treadmill and only eating salads? Find out how to really get into spring break shape: safely and effectively.

2/1/2012

Ladies, it’s week five of the quarter.  This (thank goodness) means only five weeks until spring break!  And if you (like me) have fabulous plans of bikini-filled days on the beach, listen up.

I am guilty of convincing myself that it is perfectly okay to put on a few extra pounds in the winter to keep warm.  I mean it’s natural right?  Then I have to remind myself, I am not a polar bear or any other type of artic animal and that I do not get to hibernate through the winter, unfortunately.

So, as depressing and cruel the winter is, it is not an excuse to eat those two (or three) extra Insomnia cookies, or order pizza every night (because let’s be honest there’s just not that many options for salad delivery)!

But in all seriousness, many girls panic during the crunch time before spring break to lose those extra couple pounds, or just tone up a little to feel more comfortable and confident.  The important thing to remember is that there are safe and effective ways to do this, which do not include starvation or three hours on the stair climber.

First piece of advice: avoid fad diets and diet pills.  Many diet pills have not been tested, and can in fact have serious health complications, including increased risk of heart attack.  Also, fad diets, such as liquid diets, rid you of essential nutrients, which will leave you feeling tired and looking like a hot mess.

Liquid diets are especially brutal due to the side effects of not having anything solid in your diet…just think about it.  Okay gross, I’m done with that.

Must Try: The New Starbucks® Blonde Roast

2/1/2012

If Starbucks®is a regular stop on your way to class (as it is for me) you may have noticed a new addition to the lineup!  Coffee-loving blondes (and of course all other fabulous brunettes and redheads that share a love of all things caffeine), are rejoicing over the newest addition to the Starbucks® family: The Starbucks® Blonde Roast.

The new roast, which Starbucks debuted earlier this month, is their lightest roast yet.  The blonde roast packs more of a mild-mannered taste, which can be a nice switch-up on a morning where you want to ease into the day rather than down shots of espresso (although with midterms approaching, that is completely understandable).

Blonde-roasted coffees have a shorter roast time, which gives a lighter and smoother flavor than the medium and dark roasts.

If you’re the collegiette™who prefers her coffee a little on the soft side, Starbucks® Blonde Roastis just for you.  And for all you blondes out there who want to try it just for the name, have no shame.  Blonde pride is serious!
So (blonde or not) enjoy a cup during your next trip to the Thompson for a midterm study session, or even on a day you just prefer to cuddle up on the couch and make the best of a very chilly winter quarter.
