Things To Know Before Going Abroad

12/19/2012

As suitcases are packed away and the delirium of finals week subsides, reality begins to set in.

Many of us can’t stop talking about it, some can’t stop stressing about it, and others can’t stop dreaming about it. But the day to depart from the life we know is fast approaching.
For a semester, we will bask in the marvels of the earth, immerse ourselves in new culture, and push ourselves outside our comfort zones. Studying abroad is the experience of a lifetime.

The idea of spending four months in a different country is both exciting and terrifying, but thankfully, many former travelers were willing to share the things they wish they knew before packing up, flying out, and settling in a new place.

“I wish everyone knew how life changing your experience abroad will be,” said senior Lauren D’Onfro. “When I was trying to decide if I should go or not, I was really having a difficult time. I cannot fathom how disappointed in myself I would have been if I decided not to go.”

Dress to a Tee on Maryland's Game Day

10/13/2012

‘Tis the season for good ol’ corn hole, merry tailgating, and, of course, football. We, students of Maryland, don’t take the treasured festivities of game day lightly. We pull out all the stops: war paint, funky knee-length socks, and on not-so-rare occasions, wacky costumes. As homecoming approaches, and the hype for classic college memory-making builds, many of us are getting crafty.

Saturdays in College Park are painted with a fashionable array of red, gold, black and white. But don’t expect to see any girl in a plain crew neck t-shirt. We like to go the extra mile by styling our own Maryland apparel. The t-shirt crafting creativity seen at tailgates and in the stands is nearly as impressive as the football plays on the field. To get ready for your next game day, these are some crafty t-shirt tailoring ideas that will have you walking down College Ave. in style.

Hear the Turtle this Presidential Election

10/3/2012

CNN was on the TV in our apartment while my roommates and I ate our standard Wednesday night pasta dinner. Since this specific channel selection was a rarity in our pop-culture-invested, football-enthused abode, it prompted one of my roommates to, for the first time ever, start a dinner table discussion about politics.

“I don’t have a clue who to vote for, and I don’t even know if I’m a republican or democrat, so should I just not vote?” she asked. Before I could finish chewing my food and object to her suggestion, my other two roommates agreed that they too didn’t know what action to take on Election Day.

I’ll be the first to say that politics isn’t for everyone. The lengthy speeches, backdoor strategizing, and never-ending “he said, she said” are hard to keep up with. As college students, we tend to get caught up in our own little bubble within College Park and often forget about the happenings within the nation’s capital just a few miles away. But whether we like it or not, the 45th president of the U.S. will be elected come November 6 and it is important that all eligible voters take part in the selection of our next Commander-in-Chief.

This year’s presidential election might actually be one of the most important elections this country will have, according to Michael A. Cohen of Politico.com. So for those who don’t know which candidate to vote for, now is the time to get informed.

Fun in the Sun: Skin Protection

5/4/2012

The sun can either be a best friend or worst enemy at this time of year. Its rays can warm the skin to the golden bronze or burn it to a dry red.

Summer sun is exactly what many crave all year. The cold dreary winter months cause girls to desire the warm weather and hot sun more than anything.

Look no further than Facebook for evidence. Throughout January, February, and March, newsfeeds are speckled with profile pictures dedicated to sweet memories on the beach with friends or lounging poolside in the heat. Thankfully, those pleasant days are fast approaching.

As the sun becomes more and more bold, skin becomes more and more at risk. It is important that skin is properly protected to prevent irreversible skin damage and skin cancer!

“In their favor, UV rays activate vitamin D, kill certain germs, and boost our mood. But overexposure to UV rays damage the skin. Irreperably,” according to Loreal.com. Immediate effects are the deepened or reddened skin tone. Later, sunburn appears, the skin color deepens for a few days and then upper layers thicken.

Long term effects can be wrinkles, premature aging, or cancers, according to L’Oreal. So, it is important to take the sun seriously.

SPF is all a matter of preference and skin tone, but whatever the protection factor, coat sunscreen all over. “On your body, slather on a shot glass’s worth of a broad spectrum sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30.

The Student Guide to Recycling

4/1/2012

For some, throwing that heavy stack of old term papers, endless study guides, and neglected notes into the trash comes with a small tinge of guilt—a tinge, that’s not quite heavy enough to compel the effort of walking all the way to the nearest recycling bin (wherever it may be) to allow these papers a chance to be reused again.

College students have so much to keep track of as it is.  If classes aren’t enough, there are extracurriculars, internships, and part-time jobs to constantly keep in mind. So with all of that to deal with, why add recycling to the long list?

Street Style at Fashion Week 2012

3/5/2012

While we proceed to slump in our desks and watch chalkboards fill up with terms and definitions to add to the list of things to study, fashion enthusiasts sit poised as they watch works of art strut down the runways before them. It’s fashion week. February’s lineup of fall collection unveilings began with a week in New York City, followed by weeks in London, Milan and Paris.

Though the runways are modeling trends for the fall season that’s months and months away, the streets are modeling trends that are fresh for the spring season that’s around the corner. While many of these fashionistas run from show to show, they are promised to be in the most stylish behavior!

Though the cold was still biting in New York City, show-goers were rocking a lot of outfits that will trend through spring as well. “Statement-making pants work best with a pared down top,” according to Harper’s Bazaar.

Many women have been photographed in brightly colored denim, printed skinnies, and high-waisted trousers. These loud pants are often seen paired with a mellow top to keep the drama at a happy medium. Being someone with a closet full of ‘jeggings’ ranging from red to teal, I am excited that this trend is picking up for spring!

Oscars Sunday- The Night’s Headliners

2/28/2012

The 84th Academy Awards were off to a smashing start as tuxedo-clad actors and glamorously gowned actresses started arriving on the red carpet on Sunday evening. The night’s newsmakers were Octavia Spencer of “The Help”, Meryl Streep of “The Iron Lady,” and Sacha Baron Cohen?

Yes, you heard correct. The comedian was in full uniform and full character as “Admiral General Aladeen” from his movie, “The Dictator,” when he arrived on the Oscar’s red carpet. In his hands, he held an urn of what Cohen claims to be Kim Jong II’s ashes.

The Holidays at College Park

12/19/2011

This time of year, everyone is either slaving over papers or studying all night for those much dreaded finals. Luckily, some students have still managed to take some time to embrace the holiday spirit. While the December skies cast a new light over College Park, brightly lit houses line the streets with the cheer of the holidays!

New Year's Eve Done Right

12/11/2011

It’s that time again--time for the countdown; time to reflect on the past; time to aspire for the future. It’s almost New Year’s.

Along with the typical anticipation for that evening of celebration, we also feel stressed to find NYE-worthy plans (or at least I do). I dream of the New Year’s Eve when I can go to a lively club with all of my best friends and dance the night away as we count down to 12 a.m..

With Avicii tickets marked at a minimum of $165, and promises for a cold night in Times Square, I find that my options for an unforgettable night are slim. So how else can we ring in the New Year without dropping big bucks and freezing our a*ses off?

Movie Review: Breaking Dawn

11/28/2011

Caution! This article contains material pertaining to the Twilight Saga films and books. For those of you who can’t stand the existence of this vampire romance series, consider yourselves warned.

For those of you, like myself, who are still drawn toward the story that captivated your imaginations in those early high school years, prepare yourselves for a movie that was the biggest feat of them all for the Twilight Saga.

The crowd was excited and ready to go as they showed up to the midnight showing of the franchise’s fourth installment of Breaking Dawn. With blankets and Twilight themed paraphernalia, people of all ages filled up the large theater well before 11:30. As soon as the clock hit 12:01 a.m., the lights dimmed and screams of anticipation filled the theater.
