Josh Hutcherson, whose most notable role to date was starring as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games film, was on campus this Thursday in support of UCLA’s Ally week held to support members of the LGBT community.  Hutcherson is very involved with the organization Straight But Not Narrow, and made a surprise visit with the organization, in which he handed out wristbands on Bruinwalk.  I don’t know about you but I sure hope he stops by again soon.

Titanic Remembered: 100 years later

4/22/2012

“The Titanic, the largest vessel the world had seen, set sail from Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912, on her maiden Atlantic Ocean voyage to New York. It struck an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland and sank in the early hours of April 15. About 1,500 people died. One hundred years later, the ill-fated ocean liner continues to fascinate” (Los Angles Times).

Just about everyone has heard of the Titanic and its tragic end. Whether your knowledge of the ill-fated ship came from Discovery Channel documentaries or James Cameron’s 1997 film staring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, the Titanic continues to captivate us. But…why? For years individuals have written and read hundreds of books on the ship’s voyage, created and watched numerous documentaries, walked through exhibitions, and became captivated by the stories of the 1953 and 1997 Titanic films. With the release of a 3D version of the 1997 Titanic and new programs revolving around the doomed voyage (such as the new ABC miniseries) it’s hard to not have Titanic on the mind. The story of the Titanic is a tragedy. With artifacts from the site taken in to auction and talks of merchandising it into a brand with Titanic inspired products such as jewelry, giftware, home-products, and even a fragrance, is it disrespecting the tragedy instead of just letting the Titanic rest in peace? Or are we keeping the memory of it alive, providing it with a deserved afterlife?

Slutsunite.org.

Now what is the first thing you think of when you hear this?

Does something positive or negative come to mind?

The term “slut” is most often (if I am not mistaken) used in a negative way.  At least that is what it is usually “meant for.”  We all know what “slut” means.  We’ve heard it in hundreds of movies and television shows, songs, parties, bruinwalk, a mean person, read it in countless books and blogs, maybe even used the word once or twice to describe someone.  If however you have innocent ears and have never heard of such a thing in your life, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary “slut” is “1. A promiscuous woman 2. A loose woman 3. A saucy girl.” Synonyms include: wench, harlot, strumpet, trollop, floozy, doxy, etc. (You get the idea).

Regardless of where or how you may have heard the word used or if you have even used it yourself, slutsunite.org has emerged from the number of birth control discussions, mainly Rush Limbaugh’s use of the word to describe Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke.  Slutsunite.org is actually the doing of Sir Richard. Yes, the condom makers.   The purpose of the website is to promote a “sex positive movement that brings people together who believe in tolerance, acceptance and personal freedom.”  The site states it is their goal to “take what was intended to be a hateful, derogatory word [i.e. Slut] and change it into something positive through the power of the collective.”  The Sluts Unite Oath is as follows:

“ I believe that sex represents more than just the creation of children.

I believe it is an enjoyable, healthy and a profound part of the human experience.

Meet Alexander Deiongh '14!

4/8/2012

Alexander Deiongh
Age: 20
Hometown: Highland Park
Major: Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics
Year: 2nd (Sophomore)

Her Campus UCLA: You seem to be active in a number of on-campus organizations, particularly the ORL (Office of Residential Life) program.  In High School did you think you were going to be this involved with Residential life/university organizations in general or was it something you decided on during your first year?
Alexander Deiongh: As a second year, I have been involved with quite a number of different things but I’ve selected the few that I felt most attracted me. Aside from my involvement as a student leader within ORL, I am currently involved with the Mixed Student Union at UCLA and Campus Crusades for Christ. To be completely honest, when I was in high school, I had NO IDEA that I would be so involved with Residential Life or with the University in general. I was not too heavily involved with leadership throughout high school. I was only interested in sports. When I came to UCLA, I was attracted to various organizations and groups that impacted my development as a student and as a person. These were the involvements that I invested in most. The Office of Residential Life was one of the most significant reasons why I enjoyed my 1st year. ORL strives to develop residents in many aspects through its countless initiatives across the hill (residential life). I have experienced this first hand as a 1st year and, as a result, dedicated myself to ORL as a second year and will be beginning my 3rd year as a RA (Resident Assistant).

May Mitchell

4/8/2012

Campus Cutie: May Mitchell
Age: 20
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
Major: Theater (Design Production Concentration)
Relationship Status: Single

Her Campus UCLA: I know you are a busy gal, May, but can you tell me all the extracurriculars you are involved in?
May Mitchell: I'm involved in theater, theater, more theater, and the Office of Residential Life as a Program Assistant.

HC UCLA: What do you love most about theater? And are you going to be involved in any productions?
MM: I love the ability to make the audience live alongside the characters. Live theater is so extraordinary because the moments that the audience watches cannot be re-winded and experienced again. You must live in the moment. I'm going to be involved in a production called The Ginger Man. I'm assisting the scenic and lighting designers. I'm quite excited!

HC UCLA: What is a theater production you’d love to work on (can include the transition from book to stage or film to stage)?
MM: I would love to work on a production involving fantasy and magic. I mean what's not to love about a staged Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? I would love to make the magic tangible to the audiences.

Beautiful Day. Beautiful School.

2/5/2012

On those rainy days (rare as they are) it can be hard to appreciate the beauty of our school when one is drenched head-to-toe after the mile long walk to those North Campus classes.  It can also be hard to really take note of it when you’re running late to your Stats discussion and trying to maneuver past those extremely slow walkers on Bruinwalk.  But on such nice days like these, it’s almost impossible to not just stop for a moment and really take it all in.  To really take in just how…magnificent our school really is.

Gifts For Loved Ones on Valentines Day

2/4/2012

Sometimes we get all caught up in Valentines Day being a strictly romantic holiday.  While that very well be at the heart of it, Valentine’s Day nonetheless is about love.  Love for friends, family members, or maybe even those pesky flyerers on Bruinwalk should be celebrated.  So if you don’t want to be cheap this year, instead of giving your friends a hug on Valentine’s Day, here are some cute gifts they might like.

For your adorkable friend who loves Domo or just plushes in general.  Plus he looks like a good cuddle buddy.

Okay fine I guess this gift can be for you and your special someone.  It is a cool necklace though so you could be your own special someone and just wear it proudly.

How to Help the Homeless This Holiday Season

12/10/2011

While we become wrapped up in the spirited Christmas songs, White Peppermint Mochas, and Holiday sales; let’s not forget an important aspect of the holiday season: giving.  It’s a hard time right now for many families.  If you are fortunate enough to have some spare change and free time this winter, take some time to help those in need.

So how can you help this holiday season?

1) Volunteer at a local homeless or animal shelter.

2) Contact local homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and food banks to find out what they need most.

3) Help wrap gifts that have been donated to a shelter so residents can have the fun of unwrapping a holiday surprise.

4) When out buying gifts this holiday season buy some toys that you can donate at a local fire station holiday gift drive.

4) Buy non-perishable food items, like canned goods, and deliver them to a food bank or soup kitchen.

5) Donate blankets, coats, and other clothes that can help those keep warm this chilly season.

6) Tutor homeless children.  Many tutoring programs exist in shelters, schools, and transitional housing programs.

7) Order an extra meal when you go out and offer the food to someone hungry who is living on the street.  Or if you see someone living on the street offer to buy them a hot meal.

Healthy Holiday Baking!

12/9/2011

Spending the better part of the last two-and-a-half years living in a dorm and then a sorority house has left me with what could be called “oven envy,” which is infinitely worse around the holidays. As someone who loves to cook and bake, I eagerly await going home for winter break and whipping up gluten-free and vegan goodies while listening to Christmas music (Michael Bublé please!). The holiday recipes below are easy and delicious and, most importantly, they will help you steer clear of the partially hydrogenated oils and artificial ingredients and preservatives that are found in store-bought treats! For those of you who are just as anxious to get back to a warm oven and fully stocked pantry as I am, here are some yummy recipes to share with friends and family with vegan/healthier substitutions in parentheses!
