Top Albums of the Semester

12/18/2011

There’s no doubt that 2011 has been a landmark year for the music business.  From the domination of Adele, to the rise of the indie rap mixtape, and the new rave culture of Dubstep−music, like the world, is always moving in new and progressive directions.  However, with the domination of iTunes and the ability to buy one $1.29 single at a time, an important aspect of the experience is lost– the idea of a person listening to the whole album.  This is incredibly unfortunate since real artists make albums with the idea of the whole product in mind.  Can you imagine judging the whole validity of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band on the basis of “When I’m Sixty-Four”?  All of the substance and ideas of the record would be lost.  That’s why I bring you the best albums from September on (in no particular order), in hope that you won’t be afraid to spend that extra eleven dollars.

See The World - Kenya!

12/13/2011

Mombasa, the second largest city in Kenya, is surrounded by the Indian ocean. Great food and unreal snorkeling/scuba diving makes this an amazing place to visit.

Playlist of the Week: Road Trip Music

12/12/2011

There’s nothing like finals to make you just want to leave your books in O’Neill, catch the next T to South Station, and leave that Psychology exam behind.  Maybe it’s an old idea to romanticize the idea of the open road, but there is one thing that has always been on my bucket list: a cross-country road trip.  However, as it often does, life usually gets too busy (and gas too expensive) to make my “On the Road” dreams a reality.  But, as you can imagine, I will be sure to have the perfect playlist when I finally do.  So, whether you are “Going to California” or just driving back home for winter break, be sure to check out this playlist to make the highway seem more alive.  Also, don’t forget to send me a postcard.

“Going to California” – Led Zeppelin
“Yours To Keep” – Teddybears
“Fortunate Son” – Creedence Clearwater Revival
“Dashboard” – Modest Mouse
“Postcards From Italy” – Beirut
“Drivin’ South” – The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Boston Adventures - The Middle East!

12/6/2011

So perhaps I am a bit biased (full disclaimer: I am an intern there), but The Middle East (located in Central Square, Cambridge) is one of the best places in Boston to catch live music! Need a fun end of the semester holiday date with the roomies? Check out their Harry Potter themed "Yule Ball" on December 18th (Potter Puppet Pals will be there)!

Escape to Walden

12/5/2011

The famous retreat of Henry David Thoreau, Walden nature reserve is only a short drive from the Heights. Especially with the unusually beautiful weather, it is perfect for a day of hiking, fishing, and enjoying nature!

Playlist of the Week: Just Dance

12/5/2011

Going home for the holidays, at least for me, always feels like a foray into the tunnel of nostalgia.  Besides the shocking bombardment of family portraits besides the fireplace (braces are never a good look on anyone), there are various relatives ready to feed you as though you are about to begin hibernation for the winter.  This nostalgia took an even more significant turn for me this Thanksgiving looking through old assignments I did in primary school.  One, a type of questionnaire document, asked my six-year old self what my favorite song was.  Being the music buff I am now, I was anxious to know my answer until I looked at what I had actually written.  Turns out my favorite song in first grade was none other than “Macarena.”  Despite the horror I felt at my lack of musical sensibility as a child (I mean, I’m pretty sure the only words I knew to that song were “HEYYY Macarena”), I could understand where my failure lied.  Despite their usually nonsense lyrics and eventual one-hit wonder status, there seems to be something about songs that include their own dance moves that has a gripping allure on the public.  Maybe it’s the fact that it gives motion-challenged folks a free pass for dancing (“he’s not a bad dancer, he just has trouble moving in the complex way the stanky leg requires”). Maybe it’s the subliminal way they have been streamed into our heads at every wedding, birthday and bar/bat mitzvah.  Whether it’s the reasons listed or something else, there’s no doubt these songs exist pretty deep into the cultural zeitgeist.  So here’s a playlist that encompasses a good portion of them– be warned though, it will most likely make even the most awkward dancer try to bust a move.

Her Campus BC Pets! - Molly Moltzen

11/28/2011

Did being home for Thanksgiving remind you of all the furry friends you left behind? It certainty did for the Her Campus BC writers - so much so we decided to do a week photoblog to these special family members! Kicking off the week is a yorkshire terrier named Ella that belongs to writer and editor Molly Moltzen '13!

Playlist of the Week: College Edition

11/20/2011

It’s a well-known phrase that college is the “best four years of your life.”  However, judging by the small percentage of artists who continued onto a secondary education (and the even greater majority that dropped out), this idea may not be definitively explicable in the music world.  For example, take Kanye West who was able to stretch out the idea of dropping out of college (as a positive thing, nonetheless) over a span of three albums.  As Collegiettes™ though, you can get the best of both worlds with music inspired by school experiences– without sacrificing getting an education.  Just don’t try to justify to your parents about not passing Economics by saying Yeezy didn’t have to.

“You See Me” – Childish Gambino
“School Sprit” – Kanye West
“Never Miss A Beat” – Kaiser Chiefs
“School” - Nirvana
“Campus” – Vampire Weekend
“Going Away to College” – Blink-182
“U-Mass” – The Pixies
