Bar Scene: Downtown Clemson

5/1/2012

For those who are rapidly turning 21 (or are anxiously awaiting the joyous holiday), the world of downtown Clemson is definitely an exciting adventure. People that don’t go to Clemson and have never been DT might laugh at it, often calling it small, boring, and even lame. However, after the first night exploring the College Ave. cluster, you’ll quickly see how wrong those accusations really are. Here’s a brief rundown on what you should expect, using various fast-food restaurants as a comparison:

TD’s Food and Drink:
TD’s is the Chic-Fil-A of the bar scene; everyone generally enjoys it, it has reasonable priced drinks, and it’s a guaranteed good standby to pop in at least once a week. Like Chic-Fil-A, it’s nothing fancy, but the gummy bear shots are comparable to Polynesian sauce in that they are both DANK. Here, you will find a variety of folk, from fraternity men to older locals. It’s your typical college town bar for sure…two levels, large center bar, booths with graffiti, and a convenient location right across the street from campus. Make sure you hit up TD’s on Tuesdays for Karaoke—it’s a super fun night. Photo Source

Wingin’ It:
Wingin’ It is definitely the Sonic of the bars; you can park and stay for a while, enjoying both good food and drinks. They have great happy hours and a pretty friendly staff. Here, you will find the younger crowd, who are amazed that they actually got into a bar, and a lot of people watching sports events due to the big TV screens. Wingin’ It is a good place to just chill and drink, but at the same time it can get pretty wild because there is enough space to dance to a DJ.

A Collegiette's Guide to Music Festivals

4/10/2012

You’ve probably already heard people talking about them… "Are you hitting up the Roo this year?" "Wanna go to Hangout?" "Are you tryin' to make Feel Good?" Without previous exposure to or experience with music festivals, these questions could be confused for daily convos regarding plans for the night or potential pick-up lines. However, once you’ve entered the world of music festivals, it is easy to figure out when someone is talking about an upcoming festival. As music festivals are currently a pretty big deal with most college students, you should at least enrich your vocabulary with a little of the lingo so you don’t look stupid in front of that cute, effortlessly cool guy in your Environmental Science class.

Without giving a heady testament of why I think festivals are the greatest gift to mankind, I will say that a music festival is for sure one experience you definitely need to try once before you die. It could be the most exhilarating and life-changing thing you’ve ever done, but regardless, you will definitely not regret it.

For all of you who aren’t professional festivalheads, here is a little info on some of the more popular music festivals to help with the decision of which is right for you. Click the heading to get more info on each festival and their complete line-up.

Her Campus Approved: Blueberry Frog

3/13/2012

With Spring Break in just under a week, it may be about time for you to hit up some healthy treats---especially those located in Clemson’s own downtown!

Have you ever heard of Blueberry Frog? Well, even if you’re a regular at this frozen yogurt shop, here’s some interesting info that many people don’t know. Blueberry Frog was the first frozen yogurt shop in South Carolina, originally only located in downtown Greenville. Obviously, fro-yo is a trendy and popular snack, but Blueberry Frog’s incredibly fresh and nourishing product makes it unique from other fro-yo stores. Weighing in at just 106 calories per small cup (and trust me, a small is a lot), you can have your toppings and eat them too- but really, say you read about Blueberry Frog on Her Campus and you get free toppings! All of the flavors are organic and made in the store. Sometimes yogurt sits on the shelf for months before it is distributed, but Blueberry Frog guarantees that their yogurt is made fresh daily. In addition, all of the flavors (except peanut butter) are gluten-free and all contain probiotics. Yogurt has wonderful digestive qualities and fills you up much quicker than other sweet treats.

Here's a little ditty our very own Meredith Gill  wrote about why she loves Blueberry Frog and you will, too!

Mardi Gras 2012: If you can't Make Nola, Fake Nola!

2/21/2012

In case you weren’t aware, the term Mardi Gras actually means 'Fat Tuesday,' which notoriously marks the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Obviously, during Lent, many believers of the Christian faith give something up (often meat on Fridays and perhaps a favorite food or habit) in order to honor the season. Therefore, Fat Tuesday is the last day to consume/partake in this item/event for an entire six weeks.

A little history on Mardi Gras:  this holiday surprisingly finds its origin in ancient Roman culture. In mid February, the Romans would celebrate 'Lupercalia,' a carnival similar to the Mardi Gras we recognize today. Early Christian leaders thought it would be easier to incorporate some pagan rituals into their culture rather than attempt to disregard them completely. The festival became a time of unnoticed debauchery and revelry. Mardi Gras came to America with an explorer from France right around the turn of the eighteenth century. Mardi Gras has been a major holiday in Paris for many centuries.

Hometown: Los Gatos, California
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Relationship Status: In a Relationship

What are you involved in on campus?
Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, ASME

What is your dream job?
I would love to design parts of cars for BMW in Greenville or parts of private jets for Gulfstream in Savannah.

What is your ideal date?
I love to go out for sushi and then go somewhere fun afterwards. Its always fun to watch people attempt karaoke or listen to live music.

What do you look for in a girl?
There are a lot of important things to look for in a girl. I would say that its more important about the behavioral traits and appearance is a little less important. I like girls that are active with something whether it is yoga or a sport. I love when a girl has a great smile. Intelligence is another top priority for me, I don’t want to limit conversation.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
I have a few but I think the most riveting for me is when someone speaks with food in their mouth.

What is your most embarrassing moment at Clemson?
I’ll summarize the details of this story for you. I woke up freshman year in my bed, which had been conveniently relocated to the Johnstone stairway. One of my friends passed by on the way to breakfast and asked what I was doing. I had to use my comforter as a makeshift toga and ask the security guard to let me in. My friends on the hall had taken advantage of my ability to sleep through anything and pushed me down the stairs in my mattress. They had forgotten to bring me back inside. There’s a video of it somewhere online.

Educate Yourself: Shock Factor and Provocative Media

2/7/2012

Have you ever been watching TV and all of a sudden you hear something that you think can’t possibly be broadcasting on national television? After you recover from the unexpected vulgar surprise and say a little prayer that you are not in the same room as your parents, you might question the necessity for such explicit material. The fact of the matter is that in today’s society, the amount of controversy generated by any form of entertainment often parallels the success of the product. This little technique that artists and producers are employing more and more often these days can be referred to as ‘the shock factor.

Shock sells because it interests people. Kanye West and Jay Z exemplified this theory in their joint album “Watch the Throne” through honest and cutthroat lyrics about humanity’s insatiable desire for a life of luxury and need for sex.  They even included a Will Ferrell sound clip from movie Blades of Glory that summarizes their thoughts on the use of the shock factor in pop culture. “It’s Provocative! Gets the people going!”
