Fall Out Boy isn't Fallen for Long

2/7/2013

With the constant rise of boy bands like Boyz II Men and the Backstreet Boys, it seems like the newer generation of pop wonders such as One Direction and The Wanted aren't too far off when it comes to popularity.

Perhaps it was this inspiration that urged the early 2000s alternative rock band Fall Out Boy to release their new single “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up).”  Only released this past Monday, it’s been getting a lot of attention; already becoming the No. 4 on iTunes overall, and No. 1 on the iTunes alternative chart as of 3pm that same day.

It’s been a little over three years since the Fall Out Boy hype slowly began to deteriorate, but with their new video attracting tons of views and their upcoming tour dates spanning May to June, 2013, this may just be the face-lift the band needed. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, the video was shot at Comiskey Park, Chigago, which also happens to be the band's hometown.

Revamp Your Yoga Wardrobe

1/24/2013

For about a year and half I’ve been obsessed with yoga and the clothing that comes with it’s practice. While looking around Etsy.com, I found this cute little company called Purusha People. (For those of you unfamiliar with the array of products you can find on Etsy, it’s basically an Ebay for vintage and handmade items.) Purusha is Sanskrit for “the force of goodness and life within us all." While it is based in California, each item of clothing really shows the goals and character of the company. I now am a proud owner of a few of the clothing items -- and I’m addicted. Each item is hand-dyed and sewn with care. When I received my package, the owner, Hayley Elliot, included a hand-written Thank You note. These clothes are functional, adorable, and can be worn to class, the gym, or really any other day-to-day event. Also, despite being hand-made, all of the clothing can conveniently be washed and dried.

I’ve also seen different promos such as customizable yoga pant fabrics/cuts and specialized tees. Although each product takes a few weeks to be completed, it's great knowing that the fabric isn’t harmful to skin and that each piece is made happily with love.

If you are also a blogger or enjoy reading blogs, Hayley has a Purusha blog. I love her posts because they are full of inspirational pictures and helpful videos!

Buckeye Fusion Date Auction

1/15/2013

This Thursday, January 17, from 6:30-9:00 PM in the Performance Hall of the Ohio Union, the girls of Buckeye Fusion, an all-female South Asian dance team, will be holding their second annual date auction!

Buckeye Fusion is just that: a fusion of many different dance styles, including Bhangra, classical Indian dancing, Bollywood and hip hop. The purpose of this event is not only to offer a diverse function for friends, family and peers, but to donate money to an organization in New Delhi called Jagori (http://jagori.org/). “We were hearing about a lot of the recent rape cases in India. As strong, independent women ourselves, we thought we should reach out and donate to the cause and get awareness,” said Hanisha Patel,  co-captain of Fusion with Deepa Singh.

Tickets are $5 and, even if you’re not interested in the auction part of the event, anyone wanting to broaden their horizons will be pleased with the diverse performances from Key of Gee, Kawanyan, B-boy Club, Alpha Phi Alpha and, of course, Buckeye Fusion. Each year, Buckeye Fusion represents Ohio State at competitions around the country, so do your part and support some fellow Buckeyes!

Navy Weatherly, Beatboxing Extraordinaire

1/12/2013

Name: Vanavia ‘Navy’ Weatherly
Major:
Double Major: English and Communications
Minor: Music Enterprise & Media
Hobbies: Promoting and managing local artists, singing, hanging out with friends.
Involvement on campus: President of the OSU Freestyle Rap & Beatbox Club, Campus Rep/Promoter for PSG (Prime Social Group).

HC: What's it like being the president of a student org?
VW: Being the president of a student org is exciting, but also challenging. It’s nice to have meetings and plan events that people can get involved with and enjoy themselves and also meet new people. But then on the down side, sometimes planning and organizing things can be stressful and overwhelming. Sometimes it feels like a job, but it’s something that's a part of me and I have come to love it.

Kaitor Kposowa, '12

4/20/2012

Name:  Kaitor Kposowa
Major:  Psychology
Year:  Senior
Hometown:  Cincinnati, Ohio (Although his parents are from Sierra Leone)
Twitter Handle:  @kaitorkposowa

HC:  What are you involved in here on campus/Columbus area?
KK:  I’m the news director and anchor for Buckeye TV, a reporter for The Lantern, and a student clerical assistant for WOSU Public Media (the PBS affiliate here in Columbus).

HC:  How did you snag the job as news director and what, specifically, do you do?
KK:  I was in Theater 300 and the current news director at the time graduated so our advisor asked me to take over.  I organize our team, send out emails to keep everyone on the same page, see story ideas from conception to completion, anchor, create the rundown and script, and then edit the newscast.

HC:  Give me a break down of a typical newscast.
KK:  It starts with a couple nights before creating the rundown, or the schedule.  We collect several news packages, arrange weather, and figure out who will be the sportscaster.  That day we print out scripts for the director and talent, read through, the crew will get the equipment ready, sound check, then we shoot the anchor lines.  After that, postproduction happens where I edit.

HC:  What is your career goal?

Campus Yoga Rave event first in Columbus

4/3/2012

This Sunday, April 1, the Wexner Center for the Arts was buzzing with Om’s, Namaste’s and wild dance moves for Yoga Rave. The event included a performance from the Argentinean band, So What Project. The event promoted a drug and alcohol free (but fun) party with friends.

Combining music and yoga is an idea taking off in Europe. It was the first Yoga Rave in Columbus and the fourth in the United States.

With the theme of “natural intoxication” the night started out at 8 p.m., with refreshments and a D.J. A yoga instructor showed quick yoga poses to loosen up before a guided meditation. After everyone was relaxed, the band took to the stage and everyone really got loose.

The night ended with another guided meditation before ending around 11:30 p.m..

The Top 10 Reasons I Love Spandex

2/26/2012

My favorite pair of spandex are the ones picture above.  I got them at Dick’s Sporting Goods, and couldn’t believe how comfortable they were.  Ironically, I had hardly any spandex for the short time I played volleyball on a team, and now, when I no longer play, I have plenty of the stretchy stuff!

1.     I have no shame.  I’ve talked to a lot of girls who don’t like spandex for different reasons, but a lot of the time they don’t think they can pull it off.  Sometimes we are a lot more critical of our bodies than we ought to be, and if you still are worried, you can always wear a bigger shirt on top.
2.     I find spandex extremely comfortable.  It’s like having an extra layer of skin that moves freely with the normal motion of your body.  A lot of female tennis players rock the skirts/skorts for the same reasons—spandex doesn’t reject movement; it flows with the movement.
3.     I like the colors.  Spandex is fun because it is colorful to the max.  Between the neons and prints, what’s not to love?
4.     It’s a hot item right now.  Any workout store is pushing the tight stuff.  A lot of professional athletes and athletic trainers have been using this fabulous material for a while, and while spandex definitely seems to have phases, I’m going to embrace it and rock it for as long as I can!
5.     It’s super breathable.  Since you’re not technically supposed to wear underwear with spandex, the material and color is thick enough that it hides that.

The 10 Best (and Cutest) Sports Bras

1/27/2012

I love running outside, but lately, I’ve been hooked on spinning class, which means I’ve been spending more time at the gym.  But no matter what kind of workouts I do, I’m obsessed with getting new workout clothes.  I especially enjoy dressing in technical fabrics: they breathe so nicely and I feel like I can move around easily.  Aside from the more practical reasons to get workout gear, I feel a little taller, a little cuter and a lot more athletic when wearing it.  Here are 10 sports bras that can fit any price range (many of them my top picks!).

Fitting Tip: Tame those tatas!  I have a specific trick for deciding whether a bra is workout-approved.  It is somewhat silly, but when trying a sports bra on, I jump around and run in place in the dressing room to make sure that the bra can handle me!

For the Detail Fanatic: $48 (there is free shipping all the time at Lululemon Online!).  Why is this worth the splurge?  Aside from its fantastic material and pattern, where else can you find a sports bra back that looks like that?

For the Racerback Lover: $45.  Made by Reebok, this bra is fantastic because it has removable inserts.
