The Purge: An Interview with Producer Jason Blum

4/26/2013

What if one night a year you were legally allowed to commit any crime you wanted? This is exactly the premise of The Purge, a new horror movie starring Ethan Hawk. HC GWU was lucky enough to attend an advanced screening of the movie in Georgetown. The movie did not disappoint, with both a definite scare factor and a political edge. It sparked a conversation in the perfect time to discuss gun control, human nature towards violence, and the typical what would you do?

Producer, Jason Blum, shocked the world with movies such as all Paranormal Activity movies, Insidious, and Sinister, which got major box office results with a microscopic budget. Paranormal Activity was named the most profitable movie in Hollywood history when it came out in theaters. HC GWU sat down with Blum to ask about his new movie The Purge and this booming business model.

You started in indie films. Why the switch to horror?

Free Advanced Screening of "The Purge"

4/15/2013

Need a study break or an excuse to walk to Georgetown? Head out to the AMC Georgetown on April 23rd to see a FREE advanced screening of the new Universal Studios movie "The Purge", a horror movie in which isn't set to air in theaters until early May! The government sanctions an annual 12 hour period in which any and all illegal activity becomes legal. This even includes murder. A man, played by Ethan Hawke, must decide along with his family if they will commit acts of violence when threatened. This is definitely you won't want to see by yourself.

The event starts at 8pm and there will be a meet and greet and Q&A session with the producer, Jason Blum! He has previously worked on the Paranomal Activity series and Amityville Horror, among many others. All you have to do is email Justin Solar at jsolar@gwmail.gwu.edu with ticket requests by April 20th.

Emily Massel

Year: Sophomore ‘15

Major: International Affairs, Minor in Spanish and Political Communications

Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana

What brought you to GW?

International Affairs. Coming out of high school I was under the impression that I wanted to go one of two directions – either film production or International Affairs. So I decided to go with International Affairs at the Elliot School.

What organizations are you involved with on campus?

I am a sister of Kappa Delta sorority, the captain and quarterback of my co-ed intermural flag football team, and I am President of the student organization Lemonade Day DC as well as the City Director for Lemonade Day in DC.

What is Lemonade Day DC?

It is a national non-profit organization that’s powered by Google Entrepreneurs nationally. It’s an educational program that serves to introduce 4th through 7th graders to the fundamentals of business and entrepreneurship. The kids are mentored through the Lemonade Day curriculum and write their own business plan for a lemonade stand on Lemonade Day itself, which, in Washington DC, is it April 14th. That’s when these 1,000+ participants will get the opportunity to implement their business plans by setting up, owning, and operating their own lemonade stand.

How do you balance schoolwork and all your other opportunities?

Loving Loafers for the Spring

3/26/2012

Way back in November, in an article written by yours truly entitled “The Perfect Traveling Outfit” I expressed my need for the newest trend in footwear – loafers. Though it’s been a couple months, I am still obsessed with this shoe. While ballet flats seems stale and sometimes less than flattering to me, the loafer with it’s almond-shaped toe and higher tongue makes feet look sleek. As someone who personally suffers from narrow feet, I have finally found a style that accentuates the slenderness of my feet and I love them. For the fall, the look was all about velvet, however, this spring velvet’s out and (p)leather or other materials are in. Whether you prefer patterned, sequined, studded, or plain, the loafer is definitely the go to shoe for the spring. In a time where boot season is over and sandals leave you feeling a bit too chilly, this version of an updated flat is definitely the way to go!

Spring Break Swimsuits

3/6/2012

Spring Break is right around the corner, so close you can taste it…kinda like that chocolate you’ve been depriving yourself of to get vacation-ready. The guy that works at Campus Fresh now knows your smoothie order by heart since you stepped up your HellWell game and the Relaxed girls don’t even have to ask how many minutes to set your tan for – in short, all of your preparations for Spring Break have come to a head. Now it’s time to get in some last minute shopping. All of the gym hours and calorie cutting won’t be worth it if you don’t have perfect bathing suit to compliment you’re newly toned figure, right? There’s only a couple more days left!

No matter whether your swim attire includes a bikini, one-piece suit or even a monokini, the trend for this spring and summer is definitely neon. The brighter, the better – this look is definitely not for the shy. Neon looks best when color blocked and paired with one or two other colors only…busy neon patterns end up looking like you let a kindergartener highlight your clothes. Target has this great basic pink coral and black bandeau top with removable straps ($11.99). Just the right touch of black ties the other two bright colors together. Want a bit more drama? This Free People fringe top in citrus is perfect for the beach and also comes in black if you wanna stick to the basics ($78). Neon colors aren’t just for tops either - I love this O'Neill bikini bottom from PacSun ($29.50). As an added bonus, a great neon suit is guaranteed to bring out the best tan in even the lightest of us!

Why Chris Brown Shouldn’t Have Performed at the Grammys

2/29/2012

I’m not sure when the Grammy’s became the official sponsor of domestic violence, but it might have been around three years ago when Chris Brown sent Rihanna to the hospital the night before the 2009 show. Somehow, in just three years time, Chris Brown has been ushered back into the media’s good graces like a prodigal son returning to feast. After 2 short years of being blacklisted from the Grammys, Chris Brown performed not once but twice this year. Is this some kind of twisted anniversary celebration?

Grammy Executive Producer Ken Ehrlich said recently, “We’re glad to have him back. I think people deserve a second chance, you know. If you’ll note, he has not been on the Grammys for the past few years and it might have taken us a while to kind of get over the fact that we were the victim of what happened”. Read that over carefully. Ken Ehrlich is claiming that when Chris Brown decided to punch Rihanna in the face repeatedly, it was ultimately the Grammys, an awards show, which really fell victim. We should excuse him while he “gets over” this. The message that this quote alone is sending to young women is despicable. In essence, Ken Ehrlich is chastising Rihanna for clumsily getting herself in this sticky situation right before an awards show and how dare she leave them with time to fill on the show, as both Rihanna and Chris were set to perform that year.

DC Fashion Week!

2/22/2012

This week is a very special week. No, not only because it’s a 4 day week. It happens to be DC’s very own Fashion Week! Yours truly will actually be helping out backstage and I’m very excited! I already have one show under my belt, but the rest of the week should be a great whirlwind. The show’s location changes from night to night and the events will be going on through Sunday, February 26th. All of the shows are free except for Saturday and Sunday…Saturday is already sold out so act fast on Sunday’s International Show at the French Embassy! Each show starts at 7:00 PM with the doors opening at 6:00. There are vendors selling jewelry and giving away free stuff like 5 Hour Energy! Be sure to get there early if you want a seat, it’s first come first serve with the majority of people only getting standing room.

For a list of the events check out the schedule here!

Hope to see you there!

How to Dress to Impress for an Internship

2/15/2012

DC is a place where things happen fast and it seems like everyone is always networking. We’re well into the second semester and I’m sure a lot of you are either starting a new internship or returning to the same one you’ve had since the beginning of the year. Maybe you’re schlepping coffee all day long just hoping to move up that corporal ladder. Well it’s time to throw away the boring looks that you’re used to wearing to the office. If you look put together, your boss will definitely be impressed. Here are some tips to go from drab to fab at work.

Back to Basics

Liven Your Look like Blake Lively!

2/7/2012

She plays the ever-stylish Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl, is the face of Chanel, and has that perfect cool California goldie locks look. Blake Lively, like her character Serena, always knows how to strike the perfect balance between sexy and chic. Who wouldn’t want to emulate her style for less? Just the fact that she is BFFs with Christian Louboutin himself makes me beyond jealous. Whether she’s rocking an amazing dress on the red carpet or a simple look on the streets, her style is effortless and now yours can be too!

The body con dress
If there’s one thing that Blake Lively knows how to wear, it’s the body con dress. Whether it’s a plunging V-neckline, a cut out back, or a high slit, she always shows the perfect amount of skin. She wore this white dress with black mesh and a back cut out. This simple but sexy look is really the essence of Blake’s style. Try this Free People sweetheart dress with lace back ($68). The sweetheart neckline is very flattering but the lace in the front also covers you up so you don’t have to feel exposed while your whole back is bare. This dress comes in a seductive black or you can mix naughty with nice and choose their purple hydrangea color. If you don’t want to show too much skin but still want the body con dress that showcases your figure, this color block dress from NastyGal is perfect ($48). It has a cool racer back and three different colors that are strategically placed to make you look thinner and curvier. So flattering!
