How to Improve your Social Media Safety

4/24/2012

In our social media world, being connected 24/7, we often forget to think before we post. Sharing pictures, posts and videos may seem harmless at the time, but they can have serious implications that could impact our future plans. I am sure we have all heard (and are sick of) the social media safety spiel, yet there are still stories about college students not getting a job or being fired from a post on their seemingly personal website. The truth is, what we assume is private is most likely not.

Privacy settings do exist, but unfortunately, nowadays information can be easily accessed with the right tools. This is not to scare away people using social networks, but rather a few safety tips to ensure you practice and continually monitor online reputation management.  In today’s economy, the competition is already tough, so do you really want one false move online to tarnish your future reputation of landing your dream job?

1. Use caution when clicking links: Often we receive messages from friends on a social website that are actually spam; don’t necessarily trust that the message is really from who it says it’s from.
  2. Do not allow social networking sites to scan your email address book: Here is a tip I never really think about. When you join a new social network, there are often offers to enter your email address to find out if you have
any contacts already connected with this specific site.

However, the site may then spam all of those addresses, including yours.

Matt Klein: Meet Your New President!

4/18/2012

Meet your new SGA President of James Madison University: Matt Klein! Native to Burke, Virginia, Matt is a Marketing Major and involved with Student Ambassadors and InterVarsity. A passionate leader, Matt is ready to take on JMU and fulfill his duties as president of the 2012-2013 school year.

HC JMU: What inspired you to run for this position?
MK: My passion for the school and the SGA organization motivated me the most. My experiences in Class Council the last couple of years equipped me with the leadership drive and knowledge of the organization in order to prepare myself for such a hefty role.

HC JMU: What was the biggest obstacle throughout your campaign?
MK: My biggest obstacle in running was sticking to my belief to run as an individual. Running as an individual was tough because I had to pull resources from just one person--myself. I felt that it was important for the Student Body to vote for me based off of my qualities and character and not on the group of people I ran with as a collective whole.

HC JMU: What are your plans for JMU during your term?

The BEST Summer 2012 Concerts

3/26/2012

Although it just officially turned into springtime, I can’t help but feel summer has already arrived. The excessive sunshine, the urge to break out the sundresses and seeing cute puppies on the quad does not have me complaining in the slightest. I have accepted the unusually warm weather with open arms and senioritis has made me more than ready for summer as well, but I digress… Anyway, what better way to celebrate the sunshine than to get outside and listen to your favorite artists?!

Considering myself a concert-newb, I have really only gotten into the live music scene within the past year. I was surely missing out. After attending Virgin Mobile’s Free Fest at Merriweather and seeing bands such as The Black Keys, Two Door Cinema Club, Empire of the Sun and so on, I was hooked. Fortunately, Summer 2012 will not disappoint and it’s not too late to start being a summer concert connoisseur. It will be a great time to attend concerts and outside festivals no matter what kind of music taste you may have.

How to: Secure that Internship!

2/21/2012

Internships are crucial in gaining real world experience and landing that first job out of college. Beginning your research early and designating time each week can really pay off in the long run; in return securing the perfect internship for you. While internships may not always be paid or you “ideal” job, they teach you valuable skills and provide you with more insight on what you want or don’t want in a job after graduation.

Back to Basics
The internship process can be overwhelming, and even with a chosen major, you may not know exactly what you want to do. The best way to begin your search is by starting with the very basics:
·       Write down your interests. What do you ultimately hope to gain from your experience?
·       Visit JMU’s career center on campus for advice. Ask if there are internships available on campus during the summer months.
·       Seek advice from professors and talk to your advisor on how an internship may be turned into academic credit.
·       Narrow your search by targeting a specific future career path and location that best suit your interests and field.
·       Submit your resume to be proofread and edited by as many people as possible. (See Writing Workshop section below for more information)

Michelle Carter & Amber York of ‘Priceless Pockets’

1/27/2012

With the seemingly endless amount of schoolwork, club involvement, late night meetings and study sessions, it is often hard to manage a social life, let alone run a small business. Our campus celebrities this week, however, do just that! Management major seniors, Michelle Carter and Amber York started a project in their Entrepreneurship class last semester that has now carried over into the New Year.

The idea: Wouldn’t it be convenient to not have to carry a clutch or a purse when gallivanting around Harrisonburg in the wee hours of the night? To never worry about misplacing it at a party or leaving it in a restroom would be nice, right? Or what about when you are trying to pay for your meal at Dukes and can’t find that pesky JAC card? Well that is where the Priceless Pocket comes in handy—you will never lose your cards again! Amber came up with the idea while getting ready to go out, wishing she could just compile all of her cards with her phone. Whether we are texting, tweeting, emailing or playing Words with Friends, let’s be honest—we always have our phone with us. This “aha” moment sparked the idea and thus, the design was born!

Time To Party: Holiday Edition!

12/2/2011

With Thanksgiving now behind us, and Christmas quickly approaching, it's easy to get caught up in the frenzy of Christmas activities - starting with the Black Friday sales and constant display of decorations throughout towns and malls! On a college budget, lavish holiday parties are out of the question, but there are simple ways to get together with your friends before winter break begins.

Stay Calm!

11/30/2011

With only three weeks left of the semester, the time is going to fly by incredibly fast and exams will be here as soon as your know it. As a senior, I have been through my fair share of exam weeks and they never really get any easier—sorry to disappoint.

However, I have found that talking about finals doesn’t make anything better. It is easy to get caught up in the frenzy of over packed libraries and lines-out-the-door in Starbucks, but having competitions with each other to find out who has the worst exam schedule is just wasting time. By staying on track and not focusing on others, getting ready for your exams will be surprisingly easier.

Sweet Tooth

10/12/2011

Chocolate and frozen yogurt is my guilty pleasure - which is not always the best thing.  However, there are many ways to indulge in decadent desserts in the Harrisonburg community, so if you’re like me and just can’t resist the sugar, you’re in luck!

If you have not been to Klines and/or Brusters ice cream parlors, then you absolutely must go.  Brusters has more options, whereas Klines has a flavor of the week but they are both great places to go and indulge in a cold treat.

When it comes to cookies, Campus Cookies is the best way to go—and delivering to your door is a nice feature! If you want the best of both worlds, go to Hams for their infamous cookie skillets!  A gob of cookie dough slightly cooked with ice cream on top, sounds good to me!  I can’t count the amount of times I have been to Hams solely to enjoy a cookie skillet with my friends.

Pet Peeves on Campus!

10/11/2011

From the pen clickers to the loud gum chewers, there are many pet peeves that can be witnessed in and out of the classroom.  While I consider myself a happy person, I’m sure we can all agree that there are certain behaviors people do that just get on our last nerve!

Let’s start with the most obvious aggravator: talking in the “quiet zones.” We have all been there, trying to get some studying done when those two chatty girls won’t stop talking.  I’m also sure we have all been guilty of doing the same thing… but for goodness sake take it to Starbucks!

From a person who hates mornings, I cannot stand to be on the bus early only to be rudely awakened by loud people.  Then there are the people who take up the whole sidewalk and you are forced to find ways to sprint around them.

Then we get into lunchtime, a.k.a. a crazy whirlwind of people cramming into our small dining areas.  Luckily we have a lot of dining options, but it’s still hard to find a table, forcing us to act like vultures whenever it looks like people are about to leave.  My favorite is when one person takes up an entire table to study - personally I don’t know how anyone can get work done in Dukes.  There is also that time when you get stuck behind the person who pays with a credit card and holds up the rest of us with one swipe and you’re done JAC cards.

There are so many little annoying factors that we deal with on a day-to-day basis!  What pet peeves do you girls have on campus?
