Collegiettes Abroad! Costa Rica Edition

11/12/2012

!Hola amigos!

Hoping everyone and their families are safe and dry from Hurricane Sandy and are ready to finish off the semester with an even bigger bang than what she left.

Greetings from Costa Rica, the country of beautiful beaches, tropical rainforest, and rice and beans! It's been about a month now since I've been abroad and there’s so much to talk about. From the art to the food, everything has a distinct style unique to Costa Rica. There’s always something new to discover.

In general, Costa Ricans are a set of friendly people. I've butchered so many words and sentences while talking to strangers on the street, and they would correct my grammar or pronunciation with pleasure. Life is taken a little easier here and there's a saying that sums up that attitude: Pura Vida. It literally translates to “Pure Life” and metaphorically as good living, all is well or life is great. You can say it in response to “How are you” or as a salutation.

And with Pura Vida is Pura Comida (made that one up) but it means good food. I’ve tasted different types of fresh fruits and vegetables unique to the tropics and loved most but hated some. Even fruits we have in the States, like limes, apples, and oranges, taste and look different in Costa Rica. Guess preservatives really do make a difference.

SlutWalk

4/30/2012

"Women should avoid dressing likes sluts in order not to be victimized."

These words were spoken by a Toronto police officer at a law school in April 2011, sparking a wave of "SlutWalks" across the United States. The movement came to TCNJ's campus last week, when students marched together through campus to voice the message that no matter what a person is wearing, they do not deserve to be sexually abused or raped.

Brooklyn Rapper Jean Grae: A Jeanius At Work

4/23/2012

As I mentioned in my first blog I am going to feed your “starving repertoire” and what better way than to start with dessert, Cookies or Comas. No, comas are not a foreign pastry. The unambiguous title is the latest mixtape from Brooklyn rapper Jean Grae. Not exactly the X-Men comic character, of course, but in the realm of hip-hop Grae is definitely considered Omega level.

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Grae, real name Tsidi Ibrahim, is the daughter of two of the country’s celebrated jazz musicians, Abdullah Ibrahim and Sathima Bea Benjamin. Grae was constantly surrounded by music as a child and understood the grips of the business long before she herself became immersed in the scene. Today Grae is signed under Blacksmith Records, a label comprised of some of Hip-Hop’s purest and true to the art rappers such as Talib Kweli.

Her rapping style is full of quick and witty metaphors. She is not afraid to un-rhyme sometimes and spits phrases and lines that many agree make her one of today’s best lyricists, period. I often abuse the replay button in hopes to catch the full meaning of her songs. She’s made guest appearances on numerous records with artist such as Immortal Technique, Joell Ortiz and Wale.

Jelani Davis

4/4/2012

Check out this week’s campus cutie, Jelani Davis! Maybe you’ve seen him playing basketball on campus with friends or chilling, listening to music on his super dope head phones. Whether he’s studying or relaxing, you can always feel welcome by his conversation. You’ll want to get to know him!

HerHipHop Voice: My Favorite Rapper Wears A Skirt

3/19/2012

Summer 2011, I vividly remember the colorful flutter of wild butterflies enchanting me as a lay on an enigmatic and outside-of-town grassy field while passing the day underneath warm fluffy clouds. And now the DJ scratches the rip sound on the record and my dream ends. Yes summer 2011 was definitely spent basking in smoke fumes from street food vendors, the countless miles walking on black- gum décor concrete while being “enchanted” by the migration of vagabond pigeons flying to insignificant destinations. And let’s not forget that impromptu earthquake. Trust me though, it was all worth it.

I was fortunate enough to meet this week’s featured artist last summer. She killed the stage at last year’s Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Her crew paraded around with My Favorite Rapper Wears A Skirt paraphernalia of which I recognized when I bumped into her backstage at Rock the Bells in September. Maybe you’ve heard of her, maybe not. But rapper Eternia is definitely a trail-blazer for international Hip-Hop artists.

Hailing from Ontario, Canada, Eternia is of English/Scottish/Turkish/Assyrian descent. She was introduced to Hip-Hop by her brother at 8 years old and has been rapping ever since. In a 2009 interview, she explained how Canada was not the picturesque place for harboring “urban” music, but some of her creative outlets included rapping on the playground, college radios, and a night club called La Boom where DJ Ben Jammin’ would give her the mic to lay down a few verses every week.

Hey you! Still haven’t found time out of your bustling college schedule to follow the presidential elections? Of course, we’re all so busy. But can you tell me the last thing Kim Kardashian tweeted?

Hope you’re registered to vote, but, if not, you better get a move on it. This year’s presidential elections are hitting the ground fast, and November will be here sooner than you think. Who are you voting for? Here’s some info about the two Republican runner-ups.

Name: Mitt Romney
Alias: Mr. Good Hair and Big Buck$

Hip-Hop started out in the park...

1/29/2012

I thought to myself after I wrote my last blog, losing sleep and skipping meals, mind spinning against countless hours of chalkboard calculations way into the creeping emergence of twilight. I traveled the world in search of guarded books of unusual knowledge burrowed deep in the dusty ruins of old libraries and candlelit caverns of medieval cathedrals; storing history’s untold stories written in ancient and forgotten scribe, all hell-bent in debunking the obscurities of Hip-Hop. I did this for you, reader.

Okay, so I may have stretched the truth a little beyond the first comma of that last sentence. But seriously, what is Hip-Hop? Believe it or not, the culture is infused into almost everything we do today. Hip-Hop is political, inspirational and educational. Ultimately, it is an anthology of stories told by peoples of every walk of life whose voices have been silenced or erased from history.

Hip-hop unarguably consists of four major components: DJing, Break dancing, Graffiti, and MCing. In comparison, it is the contemporary day Renaissance in which the re-construction of music, dance, art, and literature were spawned from the dark crevices of city life and creatively brought to light.

Of the notable names in Hip-Hop history, DJ Kool Herc is known to be one of the founding fathers. This house party DJ was king and 1520 Sedgewick Ave in the Bronx was his empire, unequivocally marking the apartment building as the official birthplace of Hip-Hop.

If you don’t know Ashley Fabian yet, we can assure you that this week’s Campus Cutie is a real sweetheart. This cutie is heavily involved in all sorts of activities around campus, ranging from TCNJ Homecoming to Mystique, and she’s always eager to help people the best she can!

Name: Ashley Fabian
Year: Soph . . .Oh I mean, Junior!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?: I would travel to Haiti to open my own school and make sure all the voices of my people will be heard.
