Staying in EL for the Summer? Head to the Pool!4/28/2012 |
Believe it or not, there is an upside to having to stay in your un-air-conditioned apartment/ dorm room/house while taking classes/doing an internship/actually working this summer. It is called the pool and it’s tranquil waters, ice cold drinks, and suntanned bodies are calling your name. Well, actually it’s crowded waters, lukewarm beer, and sun burnt bodies are, but that’s okay, it’ll still be fun—I promise! You’ll be so happy to take a break from work and hang out with your friends that you won’t care. This summer, the pool is your oasis, a welcome respite from the stifling heat of your stuffy 6th floor room in the middle of July. Use this list as your summer guide to all of the best pools in EL.

HCMSU's Guide to The Hunger Games!3/22/2012 |
The Hunger Games fever has spiked this week more than ever as fans everywhere anticipate the arrival of the very first movie in the acclaimed and loved Hunger Games Trilogy by author Suzanne Collins. The books, first released in 2008, take readers into a post-apocalyptic America, where the annual Hunger Games are played. But from the looks of the movie trailer, the word “played” shouldn’t be used too lightly. If the games were intense in the book, the film version most certainly brings to life the journey of survival that each of the participants is on. In order to avenge a conflict that happened long ago, the corrupt governing forces of the post-apocalyptic Panem, order two teenagers from each of its twelve districts to take part in the games. But here’s the kicker—only one of them makes it out alive. The story centers on the plight of fearless heroine Katniss Everdeen as she competes for her life. An early review from The Hollywood Reporter calls The Hunger Games a “faithful adaptation” of the book. The movie opens Tonight (or technically tomorrow) at Midnight. Now if you haven’t already bought them, go buy your tickets!
Now, here’s a who’s who on the main characters of the movie…

I Watched it on TV2/27/2012 |
It’s time for a winter round up of America’s favorite pastime—Television! Smash- for fans of Glee, but more mature. The lights! The hairspray! The—Debra Messing! Think of Smash as Glee all grown-up. The show pits rookie actress Karen (Katherine McPhee) against experienced theatre veteran Ivy (Megan Hilty), in a competition for the career-making role of Marilyn Monroe in a new Broadway musical. And what’s better, the musical is being written by the Will and Grace-esque team of Julia (Debra Messing) and Tom (Christian Borle). While the show does have its dose of glitzy musical numbers, there is a much more dramatic side to it, as well. In the first two episodes alone, the audience was introduced to subplots including adoption, divorce, scandal, and heartbreak. Now that’s what I call a television show! Watch Smash on NBC Monday nights at 10:00pm. [pagebreak] Awake- for fans of alternate realities. |

Post-Grad Volunteering: 5 Organizations that are changing the World1/19/2012 |
The average person’s stream of consciousness automatically follows the words ‘college graduation’ with another word—‘job’. Senior year is seemingly focused so entirely on this one topic that it quickly becomes the only discernible path. While I agree that employment is the next natural and expected step after college graduation (it is the point of getting an education after all), it certainly isn’t the only option. Whether you’re feeling burnt out from years of grueling study, discouraged by the current job market, or, yes I know this sounds cheesy, just want to make a difference and, you know, help people, consider volunteering. You’re young, you’re able, you’re independent, you’re smart, you’re compassionate, and the world really does need you.
Scroll down to learn more about 5 organizations that are placing college grads in communities around the world, in the hopes of making a change for the better.

How To Get Noticed at a Party - In a Good Way!12/7/2011 |
Holiday party season has officially arrived! Whether you’re getting together with old friends, attending a work gathering, or getting glammed up for New Year’s Eve, a party is surely on your horizon. For you single ladies, the holidays are a great time to meet someone new because lets be honest, no one wants to be alone this time of year. Cozy fires and ice skating dates are just too enticing. Follow these simple tips on how to get noticed at your next party and sparks will surely fly!
1. Start with your outfit. Since it really is the very first thing people notice about you when you walk into a room, make it memorable. I’m not saying you have to wear a slinky red dress to every holiday party you attend, but something more than basic black will definitely help guys spot you from across the room. We all dream of that moment right? Eyes lock and you just know he’s the one. Well, to help find your “one”, try wearing something with a little sparkle—at a dimly lit party it will pop. Whether it’s a sequin skirt or a shimmery sweater, glitter works! Just make sure you only wear one sparkly piece; a sequined skirt with a glittery top might have people mistaking you for the disco ball. |
