We Found Love: In the Quad5/6/2012 |
Romance struck. A J.Crew clad gal casually sits on a weather-worn wooden bench in the Quad. A book is open on her lap, but she’s not really reading it. She’s preoccupied by the beautiful atmosphere: the ancient old Gothic architecture, the ringing bells of Gasson, and the stream of suits flowing in and out of Fulton. Students walk by on their way to O’Neill, but their faces are a blur. Except for one.
The crowd clears and a sweaty plex-comer emerges. He’s wearing lacrosse shorts, a backwards cap, and a BC sweatshirt. A small wave. A glance. He pulls his earphone bud from his ear, smiles crookedly. A conversation ensues. They hooked up last weekend. It was casual—a no big deal thing. He tells her he had fun. She giggles flirtatiously. There’s no awkwardness and they talk freely. But there’s a twist—emotions are in the air. A static chemistry establishes itself between them. With a backwards glance, he begins to walk away. Some hesitation and he blurts: “What are you doing Thursday?” There’s a moment of confusion. She’s thrown off-guard. She’s not used to being asked this sort of question, especially not in this way. “Nothing, I guess” is her answer. Nervously backing away: “Let me know if you want to get dinner,” he says. Shock, but a quick recovery and a smile. Yeah, she thinks. “That sounds like fun,” she answers. *** She sits at a high table in Hillside, a latte at her side. A tired friend sits across from her, recounting her day. But she’s not listening to her friend. There’s a buzz—a text. He’s coming by to see her. The door opens and her face lights up. In he strides, spots her, smiles crookedly. |
Discovering BC: Gasson, the Legend of the Tower4/10/2012 |
Often pronounced with an attempted French accent, Gasson Hall, is the most iconic, if not the most beautiful, building on BC’s campus. It’s also the most likely to appear on your Facebook newsfeed. But as often as we walk by this enormous gothic infrastructure, and as often as we hear its great bells ringing at the hour, do we ever stop to ponder for more than a few seconds about the man whom the building is named after?

Introducing BC’s Stars: The Woman You’ll Wait 20 Minutes For, Ana!1/29/2012 |
BC’s Stars is a series of articles that highlights people of the BC community who should be getting more attention. They are the people who make BC such a great and unique place. As school children all know, a good PB&J sandwich for lunch can make any day of school much brighter. The essential ingredient—the hands of a loving mother who prepares a unique sandwich for her special child the night before—is the key to the sandwich’s success. The memories that come from the first few years of school often are accompanied with a lunchbox and its contents. First grade, with Thomas the Tank Engine as the face of my lunchbox, was a lot less intimidating than I expected. To this day I believe that my mother’s little notes tucked inside my lunchbox next to my delicately wrapped tuna sandwich had something to do with it. That being said, as children move from their Barbie lunchboxes in elementary school to colorful and plain ones in middle school, and lastly to paper bags in high school, there is one element that remains constant: that good ol’ mother-made sandwich.
Ana does more than make sandwiches. She provides students with motherly affection—something hard to find in college setting. |
