3 Beginning-of-Semester Love Problems Solved

10/11/2012

You’ve finally settled into your dorm, the dining hall has become significantly less intimidating, but suddenly, your college relationship is facing the dreaded “one month” hurdle. For long-distance couples, the first four weeks apart tend to be the “make it or break it” period. For hook-ups, that first month is the expiration date for the “casual” label. And for crushes, 28 days is just long enough for all that sexual tension to boil over. So whether you’ve been dumped by your long-distance beau or want to take your flirting to the next level, we’ve compiled a list of potential scenarios and talked to collegiettes and experts to help you through it!

Problem #1: Your long-distance relationship is having issues.

You promised one another that your love was stronger than the cost of a cross-country plane ticket. You agreed on daily Skype sessions and hourly texts and weekly phone calls. But four weeks is a long time and in the grand scheme of things, you’re barely out of the starting gate. You’re beginning to second guess your decision to remain in a long distance relationship. But how do you bring that up with your significant other?

“You have to approach the topic carefully,” says Frances, a senior at University of Rochester who’s been in a long distance relationship going on four years. “For me, we both wanted to stay together but we had very different ideas about what college and freshman year are all about. To be completely honest, I think entering freshman year in a long distance relationship is a mistake unless you truly believe you can grow on your own and branch out at school without feeling held back by your partner.”

A Guide to Careers in Social Media: Tweets, Tumbls & Pins

9/6/2012

The next time your parents yell at you to get off Tumblr, Twitter, or Pinterest, tell them you’re working on your career.

No, really.

With the Facebook generation’s first round of college graduates entering the job market, businesses are taking notice of our constant and multifaceted connections to the Internet. In response, a new niche that caters to our tech-savvy skill set is evolving within the corporate world: social media.

Despite being raised on status updates and hashtags, though, collegiettes may still find the ins and outs of an actual career in social media a bit hazy—after all, “Facebook” and “professional” don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand. But if tweeting for your favorite magazine or crafting Facebook posts for a clothing brand sounds ideal, read on for your guide to riding the social media current.

The Careers

At this point, essentially every well-established business has an online component; the role of social media positions is to increase visibility and the number of ways in which a company’s content can be shared. For recent grads, particularly those of us who have grown up alongside the evolution of social media outlets, the good news amid this economic downturn is the recent boom in this job sphere.

“I think it’s a great time to find a job in social media,” says Hayley Saltzman, social media editor for Seventeen. “Every brand and company wants to have a strong social presence, so there are endless opportunities.”

5 Back-to-School Beauty Trends

8/4/2012

It happens every year - the nights become cooler, summer flings fizzle, and collegiettes everywhere begin the countdown to September. It’s not just the smell of pencil erasers or new books wafting through late August; it’s the intoxicating scent of a fresh start. Of all 365 days, these are the ones most filled with anticipation and promise and the prospect of walking onto campus knowing people are taking notice.

While you may not be able to suddenly grow four inches or purchase an entirely new wardrobe, you can experiment with makeup, nails and accessories to achieve that “wow” moment. To help you turn heads in the hallways, we’ve compiled a list of low-cost, high-impact mini-makeovers just in time for the Fall debut of the New You.

1. Sweet eyes - Pretty much every love song ever mentions the eyes. To get your peepers noticed and inspire a few angsty ballads of your own, Megan McIntyre, Beauty Editor for Refinery29, suggests the “It” makeup color for fall: Chocolate Cherry. Explains McIntyre, “[It’s] the combination of a deep brown and bright red into one gorgeous, romantic shade. It's a flattering color to a variety of skin tones because the two hues almost cancel each other out when they blend to create a universally appealing hue.”

When Your Friends Start Getting Married: HC's Wedding Survival Guide

6/22/2012

Every collegiette remembers her first time seeing a classmate’s engagement announcement on Facebook. As we move towards graduation and beyond, many of us are faced with the potentially terrifying task of attending a peer’s wedding. It’s no longer an aunt or your former babysitter - things just got real. Compiled here are tips for understanding the invitation, dressing appropriately, keeping a positive attitude, and ultimately conquering the social behemoth that is your first “real” wedding.

My own matrimonial revelation came this past semester. As I scrolled through my newsfeed during a Finals Week procrastination session, the picture of an engagement ring and the words “WE’RE GETTIN HITCHED” suddenly appeared on my computer screen.

I'm sorry, what?

Who were these happily “hitched” adults and what had they done with my friends? A mix of jealousy, inadequacy, and rom-com-level sappiness washed over my sleep-deprived brain and I promptly burst into tears. After spending the next hour hiccupping Vitamin C lyrics to my roommates, I finally accepted the fact that we are young adults - with a growing emphasis on the “adult” part. Shoulders back and head held high, I decided that if there was a way to "win" as a wedding guest, I would be on the awards podium with a gold medal. Thanks to HC’s breakdown of everything you need to know before your friend’s big day, you can be, too.

Invitation Translation

Their formal language and font can strike fear in the bravest of hearts, but despite their flowery shells, invitations are both harmless and informative, providing the essentials for acing a wedding.
