Mommy's Girl: Gift Picks for Mother's Day

4/30/2013

Though Mom may say that you're the best gift she'll ever get, she's not saying that she wouldn't appreciate any other gifts. Why not get her something small - even just a cute card - for this Mother's Day, May 12, to thank her for all she does for you year-round. Choose from one of these picks or come up with a unique idea on your own (just think bigger than a pasta-string necklace. It was cute in kindergarten, but now...) Also don't forget to call and wish her a happy Mother's Day too!

Meet: Cupid

2/13/2013

Unfortunately, this little mythological God of love doesn't give interviews. (He declined to have his picture taken too.) Something about it being "too dangerous" for us mortals to approach him - unless we wish to be rendered incurably lovestruck for the rest of our human lives.

His publicist did let slip that Cupid has a packed schedule this Valentine's Day up on the Hill. He allegedly spent most of Wednesday icing his shooting arm and ordering his posse of nymphs around. Mostly, he had them spoon-feed him Russell Stover chocolates (his favorite kind).

This accurate archer also apparently plans to make an appearance at the Grand on Friday for the post-Valentine's Day dance. So watch yourselves ladies...or maybe you'll be on the lookout for him. FYI, his favorite color is pink.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

11/15/2012

As far back as I can remember, my family's Thanksgiving day celebration always kicks off with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This spectacular event (celebrating it's 86th year!) starts this November 22 on New York City's 77th Street and Cental Park West, following a route along 6th Avenue to Macy's Department Store in Herald Square.

Because I'm from Massachusetts (and my father is originally from New York), I've personally attended the parade many times over the years. Most recently, I watched the parade from Times Square during my sophomore year at St. Olaf. Two of my best Ole friends also flew out with me for a fun-filled Thanksgiving trip to New York City. The following photos are from the parade two years ago...

Meet Paige Beenen: Program Director for the Nightingale Project

9/20/2012

Life’s awkward years – better known as middle school – are recalled by many as a time preferably to be forgotten. As hormones rage and brace-faced bullies reign supreme, it’s hard for young girls to stay confident, or even look towards the future beyond a day’s pimple or boy-problem. “It’s a vulnerable time,” Paige Beenen ’13 says. “As friend groups change and everyone grows up in lots of ways, [middle school] can be a crossroads for lots of people. It always helps to have another person on your side.”

Beenen is helping middle school girls find those allies through her work as program director for the Nightingale Project. A long-standing student organization on campus, the Nightingale Project matches Northfield middle school girls with Ole women who will serve as their mentors throughout the year. The group’s main purpose according to their mission statement is to: “Make a difference in the lives of our mentees by being a friend, encourager, and role model.”

This week, Beenen and group members, or ‘Nightingales’ as they call themselves, are spending time tabling at the Northfield middle schools to recruit more girls. While Beenen says 137 Ole women expressed interest in being mentors this year, she says it is much harder to find interested middle school girls. “Middle schoolers aren’t as outgoing,” she said. “We have to hunt them down!” Still, Beenen adds, once they sign up, “All middle school girls are excited to do anything on campus with a college student.” Last year, the program boasted 20 mentor and mentee pairs.

The Beauty Beat: D.I.Y. Facials

5/8/2012

When it comes to skin care, nothing says L-O-V-E to your face better than a facial. With finals fast approaching and homework piling up during our last full week of classes, why not show yourself some love by indulging in a bit of self-pampering? Smoothing on a cleansing face mask and reclining as it sets with your eyes closed, listening to music or just lost in thought, is a wonderful way to wind down this week.

Now I know (from research, not experience) that a professional spa facial can cost upwards of $60-$80; that’s certainly not what I’m suggesting – though if you have the bills, I say enjoy the frills. For the majority of us surviving off a slender college-student budget, I’ve found four inexpensive, easy and effective D.I.Y. facials for you to try. My friends and I even tested them out this weekend to get you the low-down on each one.

The Beauty Beat: Fishtails for Lutefest

5/3/2012

For a day that has absolutely nothing to do with Lutefisk – the traditional Norwegian dish of cod soaked in lye – Lutefest and its pun on the fish always brings them to my mind.

In the spirit of fun and games that Lutefest is known for (though presenty it's most known for certain antics deemed fishy by the administration), what better way to celebrate the day than with a Fishtail braid?

As a matter of fact, braids are in style right now. From runway shows to Pinterest boards to the big screen (check out the 'do on Katniss Everdeen, star of recent film The Hunger Games) it seems that everyone is talking about braids. And when it comes to the Fishtail, anything goes!

The Beauty Beat: Spring Cleaning For Your Makeup

4/19/2012

O.K. I confess: In a bout of Spring cleaning, I recently trashed the lip gloss I wore to prom (circa 2009), and my sparkly blue eyeshadow (circa sometime in middle school). Blame it on emotional attachment, but before you judge, take a look in your own makeup bag. After recovering from shock at my confession, my roommate found an eyeshadow she’d kept since middle school, as well as a mystery compact for some sort of makeup – once belonging to her mother.

If you can’t relate to these beauty blunders, I applaud you! Still, if you use any type of makeup it’s important to know how often to clean your tools, and how regularly you should replace your makeup.

In a fascinating Good Morning America news report, "How Dirty Is Your Makeup?" GMA staffers sent samples of their makeup – from mascaras to face powders to lipsticks – to a lab to be tested for bacteria. Of the 25 samples sent in, 11 came back positive for different types of bacteria! These included staphylococcus, the cause of pink eye, skin lesions and rashes, streptococcus, the cause of strep throat and gram negative rods, found in decayed food.

Obviously, no one wants bacteria growing in their makeup. Not only can unaddressed bacteria make you sick, but they are absolutely not good for your skin! Fortunately, I’ve done your research for you. From makeup artists to health professionals, here are the general guidelines on how to care for, and when to chuck, your makeup:
