Internships: What to Expect and How to Impress

4/22/2013

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent the entire semester applying to dozens of internships and anxiously awaiting acceptances. It wasn’t until three weeks before school ended that I finally got offered a couple of them. I sighed with relief because now I have this huge weight off my shoulders, but then I lost sleep over the fact that I am in no way prepared. What is it going to be like? How am I going to be spending my days? What kind of schedule am I going to have? How do I impress my boss?

Do these questions sound a little familiar? Don’t worry; I’ve got the details. I decided to ask around campus, and boy am I glad I did. Some of UF’s own collegiettes had plenty of experiences to share with me, and it made me feel a heck of a lot better about diving into my first “big girl” job.

Spring Nail Polish Trends

4/16/2013

Let’s be real here: money doesn’t grow on trees, and as much as we wish we could still mooch off our parents to pay for that $40 manicure, sometimes that just doesn’t fly anymore. I know the only time I get treated to a mani/pedi is when I head home to mama. But I have to do something to hold me over between manicures! What’s a girl to do?

I decided to scope out the latest spring trends for nails, and boy did I come across some great finds! Now that I’ve stocked up on some of the latest nail trends, I decided to share with you a few of my personal favorites.

Keepin’ it Simple: 50 Shades of Green
Green nails, no matter what color, are really in right now. Whether it’s emerald, mint, or lime, a mani in one of these hues will have your friends green with envy. Sephora has the great multi-pack (above) featuring mint and emerald shades of green, with even some sparkle. This multi-pack is only $18. What a steal!

Understanding March Madness: A Collegiette’s Guide to the NCAA Tournament

4/2/2013

You’ve either heard about it from your Dad, your brother, your boyfriend, or one of your close friends -- March Madness. It’s the one time of year where everything else gets put to the side, and instead of learning about history or biology, your guy is studying bracket-ology. It’s that time when instead of using his monthly check from his parents for food, date nights with you, or simple essentials, he’s using it to enter in as many bracket pools as possible. Forget about spending a night on the town because from the second week of March through the first week of April, your man’s butt will be glued to the couch and his eyes to the TV.

Your man may not even spend time giving you the details of the tournament… He may be thinking you won’t understand or you aren’t interested. Well, I’m giving you the chance to prove him wrong. Here’s a quick guide to understanding everything you need to know about March Madness, so you don’t have to fight for control over the TV set with your boyfriend.

4 Places to Shop for Necklaces that will Dazzle you and your Wallet

3/29/2013

I’m a clothing fanatic -- the kind of girl who never wants to wear the same outfit twice unless it’s that cute. But as much as I love clothes, there’s one thing I notice more than the outfit a girl is wearing… Jewelry.

I’m a huge fan of statement necklaces. Whether I’m bored in class and trying to entertain myself or out at midtown, I always notice a cute statement necklace. And since I’m not an outfit repeater, statement necklaces are perfect for me because I can wear the same pieces with different necklaces to change up a previously worn outfit.

I know sometimes these chunky necklaces cost a big chunk of change.  But while I’m good at spotting must-have accessories, I’m also good at spotting a great deal. I’ve decided to share my favorite spots for finding beautiful statement necklaces that you’ll feel good about purchasing.

Forever 21
I have bought several necklaces from Forever 21. I know I can go in there and find a necklace to go with just about anything. Not only does Forever 21 offer a wide variety of statement necklaces, but they offer them at amazing prices. In the picture above, the range of prices for necklaces is from $6.80 to $24.80, so you can literally pick any price and find the perfect piece to spice up your outfit.

8 Ways to Keep Spring Break Alive Until Summer

3/18/2013

We've been back in class for a week, and I’m sure you’re feeling spring break withdrawals. If you spent your break in a tropical destination, don’t you miss the feeling of the sea breeze on your face, the sun on your skin, and the cool drink in your hand? I know I do! In fact, I’ve missed spring break so much that I’ve come up with a few ways to keep the vibes around so they can carry me through to summer. Maybe these will help with your chronic I-miss-spring-break-itis, too!

1. Next time you have to study, throw on a bathing suit and bring your books outside.
Being outside is good for you! Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, which is really important for your health. Vitamin D prevents cancer, hormonal problems, obesity, and inflammation. It also helps support your immune system. You will become less likely to get sick, and you can also help increase the quality of your sleep. Studying outside will help your body feel good, and you’ll maintain your tan! Not to mention if you close your eyes and imagine your tropical spring break destination, you just might be able to convince yourself you’re actually there.

Five Reasons to Love Country Music

3/11/2013

I’m a huge fan of country music. In fact, I don’t understand how people don’t love it. But, I must admit, I wasn’t always such a big fan. I used to cringe whenever I would hear the slightest hint of southern twang on the radio. But now, I can’t get enough of it. If you’re not a lover of country music, maybe I can convince you to give it a try. Here are five reasons to love country music:

1. There’s a country song for every mood. Whether you’re feelin’ a slow song or want something up beat, there’s a country song to match your disposition. For a more fast-paced song, try Luke Bryan’s “Country Girl (Shake it For Me).” Want to listen to a relaxing tune? Try “Tim McGraw” By Taylor Swift.

2. Country music is super catchy. Once you hear a country song, you won’t be able to get the words out of your head. You try listening to Blake Shelton’s “Honey Bee” without unintentionally memorizing the entire chorus. Trust me, if you give it a chance, and I mean a real chance, you’ll be singing right along with some of country’s best.

Spotlight on Sigma Kappa – Our Arbor House Toiletry Drive Winners!

3/5/2013

Congratulations to University of Florida’s Sigma Kappa sorority! The chapter was the winner of our Arbor House toiletry drive.

Arbor house is a community offering long-term housing and programs to homeless pregnant women and single-mother families while they pursue goals and self-sufficiency. Arbor House also provides pregnancy testing and counseling services for free.

Her Campus hosted a toiletry drive between the University of Florida sororities, and Sigma Kappa came out on top with ten boxes of donations! Because of the chapter’s generosity, we decided to provide our readers with some background on Sigma Kappa’s special sisterhood.

Sigma Kappa Sorority was founded in 1874 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Its five founders were Mary Caffrey Low Carver, Elizabeth Gorham Hoag, Ida Mabel Fuller Pierce, Louise Helen Coburn, and Frances Elliott Mann Hall.

New Year, New Trend: A Flirty Touch

2/26/2013

Transform your look from drab to fab with a fun and flirty ruffle detail. Whether it’s on hemlines or sleeves, this trend sure knows how to turn up any ensemble.

Amanda Seyfried is definitely rockin’ the ruffles in the photo above. Ruffles like the ones shown in this picture were featured on the spring runways of Balenciaga, Ralph Lauren, and Gucci. E! Fashion Police cohosts Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulus highlighted this frilly and feminine trend as one of the top trends of 2013. Do you agree?

I absolutely adore the flirty touch ruffles add to an outfit. I think this trend is great for the red carpet, for a cocktail party, a fancy affair, or even for a sweet daytime luncheon. However, I don’t see this look as something that can be utilized for day-to-day fashion. Seyfried’s dress in the picture above seems to have a sort of peplum detail that I do find rather versatile, but as far as ruffles go, in general, I think they should be saved for special occasions. Ruffles are certainly fabulous, but I think they are a bit too fancy to wear to class or while running errands, unless they are kept on the minimal side.

Many online retailers are featuring trendy ruffled dresses. I definitely understand why Kelly and George decided this trend was here to stay – ruffles are flirty and feminine – but as I mentioned above, unless they’re minimally worn, they’re better for special occasions.

New Year, New Trend: Going Global

2/18/2013

Get in touch with your global side by introducing Tribal prints and patterns to your wardrobe this spring. These prints, inspired by Asia and Africa, are being seen all over the runways of the hottest names.

Patterns make your outfits more interesting and exciting. Why not add just the right amount of international intrigue to your ensemble with a global print? It isn’t just the prints themselves that have fashionistas all over the country going crazy – it’s the color combinations, too. Tribal prints always bring together an array of colors that somehow always seem compliment each other.

I am a huge fan of this trend, and I was so excited when E! Fashion Police cohosts Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopolous declared that global prints would be in this spring. Tribal patterns are very versatile. You can find them in literally any color. From bright and bold, to subtle and simple, you can wear a casual, subdued global print to class. Want to make a statement during the day? Neon tribal is always fun and eye-catching! Tribal print is also wearable at night – I’ve never spent a night in Midtown without seeing someone in tribal! Because these prints are so in, you won’t have any trouble finding a print that suits you. I bet you couldn’t go into one store in the Oaks Mall without seeing at least one global-chic item. Next time you receive a chunk of change, treat yourself to some tribal.

New Year, New Trend: Edgy Meets Feminine

2/16/2013

Leather.

You may think of it as more of a fall or winter fabric, but this year, it’s hitting the spring season in full force; however, this season, in a delicate style.

Source: www.eonline.com

The delicate lace on the bottom of this dress provides a balance to the harsh leather and also makes the ensemble more “spring appropriate.” Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulos definitely knew what they were talking about when they said leather would be a hit this spring on the E! News special. Leather has been seen all over the runways at Chanel, Mulberry, and Jason Wu. I, for one, could not be happier that leather is trending this season.

Leather is often times seen as “scandalous” or “sexy,” which it definitely can be. However, you can rock this trend and still keep it classy. Usually, when you think of leather fashion, a leather jacket comes to mind. But this fabric has become so much more than that.
