Preppy Gators, Let Us Introduce You to Gulf Shore

4/30/2012

Although Gators love neon, they also have a preppier side. This can certainly be seen on game days and when grabbing brunch downtown. From Lilly Pulitzer sundresses and skirts for girls to polo shirts, croakies, and above-the-knee pastel shorts for guys, University of Florida students dress for the Florida lifestyle – and heat! There are tons of stores and websites that sell preppy gear, but new cute brands seem to pop up every day that have a new spin on a classic style. Although it is easy to find clothes, finding clothes that are of high quality for a decent price is a bit more challenging.

Sometimes when there is nothing to meet your needs, you have to make it yourself. At least, that’s how it seemed to Andrew Mease of the emerging lifestyle brand, Gulf Shore. “After having polo shirts that pill after 5-6 washes or polo shirts that continued to shrink after many washes I decided that I wanted to make clothing that people could enjoy wearing without having to worry about quality issues.”

Prepping for the Plane: An In-Flight Style Guide

4/23/2012

For many collegiettes who are planning on studying abroad this summer, packing is a main concern. It’s relatively easy to pick out cute summery dresses and bathing suits to wear once you reach your destination, but selecting the right outfit for travel is the tricky part. Jetsetter fashion must be a balance of chic and comfy. Although you will be on the plane and in the airport for many hours, it is important to make a good first impression on your new classmates and friends once you arrive.

Must-Have Items for Your Carry-On
First, do yourself a favor and pack a spare outfit. It doesn’t have to be runway-worthy (it can be just a t-shirt and Nike shorts) but you will be glad you did it if you happen to spill or pick up an airplane smell or there is a mix-up and your luggage gets lost. Next, get a full pack of oil-blotting pads and throw it in the bag. Make sure to include a miniature folding toothbrush and a tiny travel-size tube of toothpaste. If you are on a long flight and have to suffer through layovers as well, you will not regret being able to brush your teeth and feeling a little bit cleaner. If you are taking any jewelry or nice sunglasses overseas with you, save yourself the heartbreak and pack them in your carry-on where you can monitor their whereabouts at all times.

Nike Free Run: Behind The Obsession

4/19/2012

It’s no secret that UF students have a soft spot for apparel that is bright and bold, so obviously we would be drawn to the Nike Free Run running shoe. But with so many options, how are collegiettes to select the perfect color combination? And how can these shoes be incorporated into outfits we already own?

The Nike designers have done an excellent job of creating shoes with fabulous colors – the hardest problem is determining which pair to get! There are the traditional one-color Nike Frees that you know will go with the clothes in your closet, but life is always about taking risks, so consider branching out trying one of the most eye-catching combinations. There are choices like the Bright Mango/Action Red or the cotton candy-inspired Bright Turquoise/White/Pink. If you are looking online, make sure to check several websites, as some retailers have more rare combinations available for purchase than others.

You might be a bit apprehensive about buying such bold shoes and wondering if they will match anything you own, but relax, they are gym shoes! Although Nike Free Runs can be easily transitioned into less casual outfits, essentially they are just sneakers and everything does not have to match perfectly at the gym. Pair the Nike Free Run with workout capri pants or yoga pants. In regards to wearing them with normal attire, think about pairing them with cute shorts when you run errands. This way you are still stylish, but not in pain by the time you hit the last store on your list.

Football Fanatic in 5 Minutes

4/12/2012

Football is Europe’s favorite sport and if you are travelling across the pond this summer, it will be unavoidable. Soccer might not be your thing, but before you head overseas, consider brushing up on your soccer knowledge in case you need something to reference while chatting with cute European boys!

Start your research by picking a team to follow. There are so many professional teams in Europe that it would be a major feat to memorize facts about each one. If you are studying abroad, there is likely to be a professional team in or near the city you will be inhabiting, so it would be easiest to become an expert on that one! Once you have selected your new favorite team, check out the roster online and determine who is the star of the team. In Europe, footballers are the celebrities, so you need to be prepared on who to look out for. A quick internet search on the team can supply you with all the information you will probably need. Pay attention to recent news articles and see if there are any upsets you should be aware of and if there are any upcoming games. After arriving in your new European home, do what collegiettes do best - shop! Scour the nearby stores and look for cute jerseys or scarves you can wear around. Team apparel is a great conversation starter and could lead to scoring a date to the big game.

Some of the most popular places to study abroad are in England, Italy, France, and Spain. Soccer is a huge deal in those countries, especially in England and Spain. Other than the clubs listed below, you will probably hear about Chelsea, Arsenal, AFC Ajax, Valencia CF and Liverpool.

Sun Smart: Preserve Your Skin and Prevent Wrinkles

4/5/2012

As summer approaches, many UF collegiettes are focused on bikini bods and getting tan. Whether it is from visiting the tanning bed or from studying by the pool at your apartment complex, skin damage is skin damage. Having the perfect all over tan might seem like a top priority now, but who wants to be covered in wrinkles in a few years? Wrinkles are some of the last things on our minds as undergraduates, but if we do not start focusing on protecting our skin now, we could face severe beauty problems in the future.

What causes wrinkles? Numerous things can influence how soon wrinkles will appear. Some factors that cause wrinkles are genetic and out of our control, such as having fair skin. However, we can limit our sun exposure, plan a balanced diet, hydrate our bodies (inside and out) and select beauty products that are kind to our skin. Making frequent facial expressions can cause wrinkles as well. Smoking and sleeping on your side also cause skin to wrinkle.

Eating Healthy Around Gainesville

3/26/2012

Regardless of our eating habits prior to college, being away from home poses new challenges to eat well but also to eat healthy. It might be hard to discover new places to eat during class days because most students grab lunch on campus, but the weekend is the perfect time to branch out and explore what nutritious food options Gainesville has to offer. Our town has a wealth of fun restaurants with unique dishes that are sure to please everyone’s palate! Here is a short list of restaurants you should be sure to try out.

Emiliano’s Cafe

If you are a fan of Latin cuisine, Emiliano’s is a must. With fresh, authentic options, you will not leave the restaurant hungry. Make sure to test their tapas, especially the Crab Stuffed Portobello. For lazy weekend days, cruise in and enjoy their brunch – the tortilla española de corizo is a must!

The Top

When asking students their favorite restaurant in Gainesville, The Top is always high on their lists. From a variety of vegan and vegetarian food choices to sandwiches, this alternative venue is a Gainesville must!

Extreme Fans: How Far Will They Go?

3/15/2012

Before the Hunger Games there was Twilight, and before Twilight there was Harry Potter; our generation certainly has never lacked a popular series to obsess over! However tempting it may be to spend your days discussing the pros and cons of the swoon-worthy male main characters, collegiettes must find a balance between causally enjoying these series and visiting IMDB fifteen times a day to see if there are new movie stills of Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence.

Although some may debate the educational value of these series, it would be difficult to argue that the books do not draw in a variety of readers. They might be labeled as “teen fiction,” but that does not explain the hordes of middle-aged women at the book releases! Fundamentally, these books appeal to persons looking for an escape from reality, with characters that we can easily relate to and envision within our own lives. In these series, the settings are very natural and removed from what most collegiettes encounter on a day-to-day basis.

Unique Bathing Suit Options to Stand Out from the Crowd

3/1/2012

As spring break approaches, we are bombarded with helpful tips on how to find the best bathing suits for our bodies and the best workouts to enhance our figures. Even with so many different options being thrown at us, we often don’t get insight into which brand has the best looking (not just best fitting) bathing suits and information on how to find the cutest prints on the market. This season, we’re here to help you narrow down where to find your new go-to beach look.

Go bold with geometric prints

Who can miss a brightly colored print in a sea of plain bikinis? Try rocking a geometric print to stand out and show off your new tan. We recommend choosing one with a splash of neon, like Mara Hoffman’s latest design.

Recipe for a Tropical State of Mind

2/23/2012

The excitement of a new semester has officially worn off, and now we are stuck in the pre-spring break lull where our schedules are full of tests and meetings and our daydreams are full of tropical paradises. To help ease the pain of waiting these next few weeks, try out these recipes and give yourself a mini-vacation in Gainesville.

Make piña colada cupcakes…
Although many collegiettes are watching their figures for bikini season, one cupcake won’t hurt and a little dose of sugar will brighten your day.

Mix a large can of crushed pineapple in juice with a box of yellow cake mix then pour it into your cupcake tin and cook following the baking instructions outlined on the box. To make the icing, mix a can of cream cheese icing, a fourth of a cup of sugar, and crushed pineapple (use another large can of crushed pineapple in juice, but this time drain the juice before mixing). You can add in coconut flakes if you choose. There are many variations of this recipe so test them out until you find your favorite!

..or just apiña colada.
If you aren’t feeling domestic (or simply don’t have the time to bake), break out your blender and make virgin piña coladas in your apartment using a mix from Publix or Wal-Mart. Nothing perks up a study session like a fruity drink!

Mix up a parfait.
Fruit parfaits are a great treat and are easy to make when you have a time crunch. You can either start by following the directions on the pudding mix package, or cheat and use premade pudding. Simply alternate layers of fresh fruit and pudding (beginning with a pudding layer) and enjoy!

Seven Tips to the Perfect Ski Bod

1/30/2012

Collegiettes heading to tropical destinations this spring break don’t need to be reminded to hit the gym regularly and soak up some Vitamin D whenever possible, however, it’s the people heading north to hit the slopes who might not realize that they are the ones who truly need the workout. Not only will people be checking out your physique when you jump in the hot tub, but also you need to actually be fit so you can shred it on the mountain. Here are some fitness tricks that you should consider working into your normal routine that would better prepare you for your epic ski vacation:

Run. Run a lot. Mix it up with long runs and sprints to build up strength and endurance. Running is one of the best ways to prepare for skiing.

Add in lunges and squats. You want as much leg strength as possible.

Continue putting in time on the elliptical and Stairmaster- the extra time will really pay off when March rolls around!

Bike either on a spin bike in the gym or around campus.

Stretch! Consider taking up yoga or Pilates. Working on flexibility now will help prevent injury later.

Rollerblade! Not only is rollerblading a fun and unique pastime, it is also an excellent way to get fit for skiing as it exercises many of the same muscles. If you are really looking to up your ski intensity, they make roller skate skis that help you simulate the skiing motion.

Try to workout for an hour or more a week to prepare yourself for the long days on the mountain. After all, you will be skiing way more than that each day to get your money’s worth.
