Cherry Blossom Season!

3/26/2012

This week marked the real start of one of DC’s claims to fame, the cherry blossom festival! Thousands of cherry trees surround the tidal basin, spreading pink petals everywhere. The National Cherry Blossom Festival brings in more than 700,000 people each year to enjoy the mark of springtime and participate in multiple cultural events. The festival also includes a 10 mile run, a parade, and a rugby union tournament.

As campus is located so close to the National Mall, it is easy to walk over and enjoy the beautiful trees. The blossoms are only at their peak for two weeks, so head over as soon! Bring a book, blanket, Frisbee, or football to help you make the most of your cherry tree experience. This is just one of the amazing cultural activities that makes GW and Washington, DC, so amazing.

Postering Day at GW!

2/20/2012

Since GW is such a politically active school, it makes sense that student elections would be a highlight of the school year. Students can choose to run for President, Undergraduate at Large, Senator of their particular school, and several other positions.

Because elections are next week, postering occurred this week on campus. All candidates hung up fliers advertising their campaign on Phillips Hall, The Marvin Center, and around campus, hoping to harness more attention. This is a huge day for candidates because it publicizes their campaign and makes it more official.

Campaign videos and information about each candidate is available online at Choose Your GW so everyone on campus can be more aware of who is looking to help run the school! Before voting, try to learn more about each candidate so the best people for the jobs are elected. Don’t forget to vote February 22nd and 23rd at gwelection.com!

Greek Basketball Game Vs. Umass

2/15/2012

When you think of GW, basketball is definitely not the first thing that comes to mind. The student body is far more focused on political debates than tailgates, and we have all learned to accept that. However, once a year, the entire Greek community, which makes up a huge part of campus life, comes out to support the Colonials.

Everyone was encouraged to wear their letters to the game that took place on Saturday, February 4th, and support their organization. The organization with the highest attendance received a donation to their charity, and recognition among the Greek community. Some Greeks even had the opportunity to participate in a half time basketball game! Although GW lost the game, 86-75, everyone had fun going out to support their organization and their school. Students who loved the Greek basketball game and want to get more involved in school spirit should consider joining the Colonial Army, a student organization that hosts tailgates before big games and encourages Colonial spirit!

Summer in February at GWU?

2/7/2012

If you looked around campus this past week, you would see GWU students wearing shorts, sundresses, and sunglasses. No, its not spring yet, but we are in the middle of record braking temperatures for Washington DC.

Whether or not you agree with global warming, I am sure you will agree with taking a break from the freezing winds and puffy jackets while this warm streak lasts.

Welcome Week at GWU

1/23/2012

Spring semester is just starting at GWU, and that means Welcome Back Week!! Different frats are hosting parties, such as Sigma Chi’s FrattyShack, and some clubs are hosting promotional events. Since professors are not giving a lot of work this week, this is the prime opportunity to have fun before the semester really starts.

GW hotspots such as Nooshi are also packed as students return to campus. This and next week provide the perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends and maybe make some new ones!!

Club G Is Poppin' This Week

12/17/2011

Thinking about studying in Gelman Library this week? Well think again. Club-G is the place to see and be seen at this point in the semester. Almost every seat seems to be taken, and study rooms have been reserved weeks in advance, making finals week even more unbearable. People have gone as far as to sit on the floor outside of the stacks in order to find a quiet place to focus on their work.

Not a single study room is available.

Gelman cubicles are filled, good luck finding a spot!

Talk of the new Eckles Library on the Vern have caused the most studious to head over to the other campus in search of the perfect study venue. On the Foggy Bottom Campus, Duques and Phillips Hall offer empty classrooms that would make the perfect study venue. Gelman is being renovated starting Summer 2012, hopefully making for a better finals experience.

MTV Filming Documentary At GWU

12/9/2011

GWU has consistently been chosen as America’s most politically active campus, with campus located in the heart of the capitol. When MTV was looking for locations to film their documentary about the 2012 presidential election, it was easy for them to choose GW. This week, camera crews were spotted in J-Street and around campus, interviewing students about their opinions on the current campaigns and what they are looking for in a candidate.

Students interviewed by the MTV crew will be featured in a documentary that will air in January, focused on college students’ political opinions. They were asked questions such as, “What question would you ask a political candidate?” and “Do you think Obama has fulfilled his 2008 campaign promises?” Tune in next month to see your friends represent our school!

The Beginning of the End of AIDS Conference

12/2/2011

We all go to school in the heart of the nation’s capitol, with the White House just three blocks from campus. Many students forget this awesome fact as papers and finals start to pile up. This week, GW had the amazing opportunity to host the Beginning of the End of AIDS conference, with President Obama, Alicia Keys, and Bono all arriving on campus. A few select students were invited to watch these important people address the nation in person, although the program was available live via Youtube broadcast.

Presidents Obama, Clinton, Bush and multiple celebrities spoke about the importance of looking towards a future without HIV/AIDS, in collaboration with ONE, an organization based in Washington, DC. This is just one of many high profile events that has been hosted on campus. Aren’t you glad you go to GW?!
