Candlelight Vigil for Lillian Pagenstecher

5/23/2012

Parents should never have to say goodbye to their child, sisters should never have to say goodbye to their sister, and a friend should never have to say goodbye to their friend. But on the warm Sunday evening of May 12th, family, friends, sorority sisters, teammates, faculty, and even strangers came to say goodbye to one of University of Oregon’s most lively and enchanting students, Lillian Pagenstecher.

“You made me appreciate life more because you had the best, most positive attitude and you were always up for anything. What great adventures we had...what great food creations we made...what great memories we cherished together. You are truly loved by everyone."

“Never before have I met someone who has had such a positive influence on everyone's lives. Lill, you literally made everyone's life so much better. You made sure to make every situation as good as possible and put everyone's needs before your own. No matter what was going on, You made sure to live your life to the fullest."

“Every second is precious, and I will strive to spread as much positivity and happiness you have given all of us as best I can. I wish that more people could have experienced your life, but you will live through all of us each day. I hope that there are unlimited snacks, games, friends, sunshine, and peace wherever you are.”

Ball Python Love: Life with a Snake

4/30/2012

Jennah and Lotus do almost everything together. They wake up together, go to class together, venture on roadtrips together, and even go out to the bars together. Lotus has many qualities of a good companion and friend; she’s loyal, loving, observant, and sweet. She’s not too clingy, low maintenance, never snaps, and is a great listener. The only downside is that she might crawl all over your man if you don’t keep an eye on her, but she can’t help it! That’s because Lotus is a beautiful 7-month-old ball python, Universty of Oregon student Jennah Stillman’s pet and loyal companion.

Jennah and Lotus’ friendship began at the beginning of the school year. Having grown up in Northern California, Jennah remembers having always loved reptiles. Once she heard that one of her hallmates from freshman year was selling baby ball pythons, she knew she had to have one. Like any responsible potential pet owner, Jennah talked with him about the maintenance, care, and lifespan for a ball python snake and a few months later, Lotus became a new addition to her home.

While pets can be fun to have around the house, they also can require time and money, two things that many college students are short on. While Jennah agrees that having a pet in college might not be for everyone, she assures that snakes are fairly easy and cheap to care for. In contrast to
domestic pets, such as dogs and cats, snakes are opportunistic eaters, meaning that they only need to eat every 2-3 weeks, and can last up to 3 months without eating if they have to. Other than food and water, snakes only require a moist environment, a terrarium and a heat source, such as a heat
lamp, all of which can be easily found from previous owners on Craigslist.

The Secret Benefits of Green Tea

3/16/2012

It’s 2:00 p.m. on Monday. It’s that lull of the day when you don’t want to walk to one more class, but rather curl up in your warm bed and go on Facebook to look through all your pictures from the weekend before, at least two or three more times. It’s the time of day when your motivation level approaches empty. It’s the time when most college students either succumb to the lull or pour themselves another cup of caffeine.

My caffeinated drink of choice has always been coffee. How could it not be with the allure of Starbucks on almost every corner?  Yet as I stand in line trying to decide between an iced skinny caramel macchiato or a soy double pump vanilla latte, I can’t help but notice that more and more people around me are starting to trade in their java beans for tea leaves. After more research, I was surprised to find out that today, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, second to water. Green tea, in particular, seems to have become the new caffeinated vice because of all the hype surrounding its many health benefits. But is there any truth behind the hype?

Many scientific studies have lead people to believe that green tea can help fight cancer and heart disease, as well as help burn fat and prevent diabetes and dementia. The reason that green tea holds so many benefits lies in the way that it is processed. Green tea, unlike black tea and oolong tea, is made from unfermented leaves, thus holds a high concentration of powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants fight free radicals which are damaging compounds in the body that contribute to a number of health issues from heart disease to dementia. Scientists believe that a cup of green tea every day may do more than just provide a caffeine boost to bring you out of the 2:00 p.m. rut.

A Sasquatch! of a Lineup

2/27/2012

The long wait is over. Festival season is rapidly approaching and music lovers from all over the country are preparing to make the journey to see their favorite musical acts at one of the many music festivals this spring and summer. Along with the anticipation of attending a music festival, the release of a festival’s lineup can be an exciting event all on its own. Recently, popular festivals such as Coachella, Bonaroo, Snowball, and Hangout have released their star-studded lineups. Among these festivals was the Northwest’s very own Sasquatch! Music Festival.

Sasquatch, which takes place over Memorial Day weekend at the Gorge Amphitheater in Washington, is known for having an eclectic mix of alternative and indie rock, hip hop, and electronic acts that appeal to a vast variety of music lovers. Last year, the festival celebrated its 10th anniversary with a stacked lineup including acts such as Foo Fighters, The Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Bassnectar, Skrillex, Ratatat, Flogging Molly, Bright Eyes, and Cold War Kids. While the festival’s headliners were primarily showstoppers from the 90s, the overall lineup had something for everyone. It contained popular and up-and-coming acts from multiple genres scattered throughout the four-day festival. This year was expected to be even better.

Yet when the lineup dropped this month, there was a somewhat mixed response from veterans and prospective first time attendees to the Washington festival. Overall, most people were shocked at the somewhat unexpected and lackluster array of headliners for the 2012 festival.

How to Celebrate V-Day Without Breaking the Bank

2/14/2012

Whether you’re taken or living the single life, Valentine’s Day can always get a little expensive. So how can you celebrate this holiday with the people you care about while staying on a college budget?  Here are a few unique ideas to help you have a memorable (yet inexpensive!) February 14th.

Homemade Picnic Date: Grab your sweetheart or a few friends, find a nice grassy place near campus and pack a picnic! If you don’t have a picnic basket, decorate an old shoebox and fill it with some inexpensive treats. You can bring a bottle of inexpensive champagne or sparkling lemonade and include some glasses from home or plastic champagne glasses. For the main course, you can throw in a heart shaped PB&J, a thermos of your favorite soup, or prepare and pack a pasta dish if you’re feeling like having a Lady and The Tramp dining experience. Bring homemade cupcakes or a small package of your favorite cookies for dessert. Make sure to include a small candle for ambiance, and violá! You’ve just created the perfect romantic date.
