Collegiettes' Real-Life OMG Love Moments5/11/2013 |
We can all dream that perhaps one day he’ll show up with a bouquet of flowers for no reason, he’ll find some clever and unexpected way to remind us that he loves us, or he’ll do just the right thing to cheer us up after a crappy day. There are endless amounts of things that boys and boyfriends can do to seriously blow us away, but all too often, they miss the opportunity to do so, thanks to whatever sports game is currently on TV or whichever friend he desperately needs to beat in cyber-land-video-game-world. Well, while some boys waste away on the couch, there seems to be some number of guys that has been taking good notes. Lucky collegiettes have shared their guys’ most romantic gestures with Her Campus, making OMG-love-moments come to life. A Change of Pace “My boyfriend really enjoys sleeping. He wouldn't wake up early for anything. At the end of last semester, I was stressed before an 8AM final. I got a text saying ‘open up.’ My boyfriend woke up at 7 and walked ten minutes from his dorm just to give me a hug before my final.” This adorable gesture shows that Bridget’s boyfriend took the time to think about what would make her happy. It was nothing of grandeur, but the thought behind it – and the effort it probably took to drag his a** out of bed that early – spoke volumes, and showed that he really cared. An Anniversary Gift |
Cleanser vs. Face Wash vs. Scrubs & More: Beauty Product Lingo Decoded4/27/2013 |
If you’ve walked down the aisles of your favorite beauty supply store lately – hey, CVS counts too – you’ve surely been pummeled with product after product that promises clearer skin, better coverage, and less greasiness. Things can get confusing as you realize just how many products can be used to wash your face or cover up blemishes. We’ve consulted beauty experts to help collegiettes decode all this beauty lingo nonsense and get to the bottom of what it is that makes products different from one another and what they all actually do and which ones you really need.
Cleanser vs. Face wash vs. Scrub New Jersey-based dermatologist Dr. Rebecca Baxt points out that “cleansers and face washes are the same thing – each is simply a liquid used to wash the face. Scrubs, on the other hand, have grit to them, often beads or bits of plant matter to try to improve exfoliation.” While cleansers and face washes are meant to remove dirt, scrubs remove a layer of skin from your face. Beauty expert and owner of two top California hair salons Hasblady Guzman says, “I love exfoliants [scrubs], especially Aveda. Put it on a cotton round and use it after you’ve washed your face. It makes your skin look younger.” Though our collegiette skin is not so old, a good exfoliation a couple times a week helps to brighten your complexion. For the rest of the time, rely on cleansers or face washes to just clean your skin. Neutrogena Visibly Bright Daily Facial Cleanser, $7.49 at Neutrogena.com. Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser, $5.99 at Drugstore.com.

How to Know If You're Just a Rebound4/12/2013 |
I can’t say that I’m too familiar with the technicalities of actual sports, but that certainly doesn’t mean I can’t apply some of those rules to the life of a collegiette. I mean, didn’t we all classify our high school hook-ups using the “bases” method? And because I’m athletically disinclined, for me the word “rebound” doesn’t apply to basketball – it’s basketball, right? – but rather to those tortured souls who get used and abused by others who have experienced recent heartbreak. The rebound is the perfect pick-me-up from a not-so-perfect ending of a previous relationship. A rebounder enjoys the thrill of freedom, the overwhelming number of opposite sex options, the excitement of a new prospect. Naturally, guys (and collegiettes) in this situation are all too inclined to get back into the game – fast. And while that’s great for them, it kind of sucks to be the rebound-ee. But sure enough, Her Campus has a little something to say about being “that girl” (or guy?), and how to play the game right. |
10 Timeless Accessories That Every Collegiette Needs In Her Closet4/4/2013 |
Collegiettes know that trends come and go, and it’s better to only buy into the ones that suit your personality (and perhaps your budget!). But sometimes, what’s on trend isn’t always the most practical, so it’s important to have basic back-up accessories in your closet. Accessorizing isn’t always about getting your hands on the latest “it” bag or that awesome three-finger knuckle ring you’ve been dying for. It’s also about enhancing your outfits with pieces that are timeless – these are the must-haves that’ll make you look polished, and strike a perfect balance between totally trendy and comfortably classic. Here are 10…
1. A Carry-All Tote For those collegiettes uninterested in carrying a backpack across campus, a classic tote is an item you’ll use without fail. Choose one in a color you won’t get sick of – avoid neon, crazy patterns and embellishments like studs or fringe – and that you’ll be able to match with any outfit. A roomy bag made of a sturdy material is “perfect for those college girls looking for a stylish bag to carry their books and laptop,” points out fashion stylist and commentator, Colin McDonald. 10 Reasons You're Still Not In A Relationship4/3/2013 |
Random hook-ups are fun until Friday night date-night rolls around and you’re stuck with your TV remote, a bottle of wine, some popcorn/candy and your silent, non-vibrating phone. While these sorts of situations allow for quality time spent with your fellow single besties, you all recognize that – even once in a while – you’d rather have a night that consists of good wine, a meal of more than just popcorn, and perhaps some company provided by a member of the opposite sex. And what’s more, you all deserve that. What is it, you ask, that makes you destined for the couch on the very same nights on which your school’s happiest couples allow themselves to enjoy a romantic evening alone? It just doesn’t seem fair, and sometimes, it doesn’t even make sense. Sure, we all have our flaws, but how is it that our little quirks turn into horrible habits that result in a shrinking “potential boyfriends” list? Her Campus has a few hypotheses that seem to answer this question – it’s just up to you to figure out which of the following is preventing you from finding a relationship. |
The "I'm a B*tch" Signs You're Giving Off – Without Even Knowing It!4/1/2013 |
As your Thursday night comes to a close, you can’t help but wonder why you either a) didn’t meet anyone new at a frat-house filled with people, b) didn’t really have any great conversations with anyone, or c) didn’t go home with a guy’s number. For the most highly-anticipated night of the week, you can’t help but feel that it was kind of a bust because all you really did was get unpleasantly drunk while standing in a circle with your 5 best girlfriends chit-chatting about how the punch is surprisingly delicious. Perhaps there’s a reason that some nights come and go without a conversation with new (or particularly hot) people/men. As nice and approachable as collegiettes can be, we can sometimes revert to behaviors that say, “Don’t talk to me, I’m not interested,” instead of “I think you’re cute and want to talk to you.” Guys will turn the other way if they feel that you’re unapproachable or just plain b*tchy. Here are some signs you might be unintentionally giving off that keep people away for fear that you might, like, rip their heads off if they even think about speaking to you… |
Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda: 11 Guys You Should Really Reconsider3/7/2013 |
At some point, it seems like we’ve seen all the frat houses there are to see, met all the guys there are to meet, and even hooked up with all of the ones that are worth hooking up with. College communities can get really small really fast, and before we know it, we collegiettes seem to run ourselves in circles by hanging out with the same crowd night after night, and inevitably hooking up with the same guys – or, more simply, no guys at all. If you’re stuck in a rut, and it’s looking like there are absolutely zero options for potential crushes, it might be time to backtrack. Take a trip down memory lane (distantly and not-so-distantly), with Her Campus’s guidance, of course, and figure out which guys from your past are totally worth revisiting (we promise, there are some!). He sat behind you; you exchanged hi’s and bye’s; you did homework together a few times; the semester ended. Well, you definitely let that one slip away, but lucky for you, you have his number from when you had to meet to collaborate in the library (note: if this is not true, this is where expert Facebook-stalking skills come into play – we know you’ve got ‘em). If you’re uncomfortable sending him a random text, try a Facebook message suggesting that it’d be nice to catch up. And if you happen to run into him on campus, don’t settle for a quick hello – chat him up, reconnect, and propose to hang out sometime soon. A casual lunch, coffee or stroll around campus or town are good options for this kind of get-together. |
9 Foods That Double As Beauty Products3/4/2013 |
Usually we like to keep our food stash very separate from the bathroom, especially if you’re dorm-livin’, but it seems there’s much more we can do with our goodies than just eat them. Yes, it’s true: some of the most effective beauty treatments can be made ever so simply in the kitchen with everyday food items. Such kitchen staples offer natural fixes to the most common beauty needs in the book: shinier hair for those of us who go slap-happy with hot tools, smoother complexions for the girls whose skin has been abused by winter weather and de-puffed eyes for when we stay out partying up studying all night. There’s no need to panic if you’re getting ready to go out one night and realize mid-shower that that bottle of shaving cream sitting there has been empty for days. The solution lies no further than your kitchen counter…
Bananas If you thought the only use for overripe bananas was to bake banana bread, think again. The creamy consistency mimics shaving cream if you mash it up and add a bit of water. The result? A sweet-smelling shower and the smoothest legs ever (but maybe a clogged-up razor). Add a bit of water to a whole mashed-up banana to get a creamy consistency that will spread over your legs. The vitamin A and potassium content in bananas will leave your skin super-moisturized. And the best part is that this use for bananas is calorie free! Sugar |
5 Dating Habits to Ditch ASAP2/27/2013 |
It’d be great if dates progressed the way they do in the movies: he picks you up with flowers in hand, you make a flawless grand entrance down the staircase in your 4-inch stilettos, dinner goes off – followed by a chocolate-y dessert – without a hitch and the night concludes with a perfect foot-popping kiss. If only, right?
