A Successful Semester

8/11/2012

Every girl wants to come back to Champaign with a higher level of confidence to tackle whatever stresses another semester at the university may bring. A successful semester takes some preparation; luckily summer is the perfect time to work on the factors that will make your semester great, socially and academically.

Don’t go down the same paths that have led you to failure and unwanted stress in previous semesters. Learn from mistakes you made in past semesters and look back on the choices you have made while thinking of what sticky situations could have been avoided. Steer clear of the guys who caused nothing but tears and unnecessary drama, dodge pointless arguments with friends and keep up with the classes you know will be tough. The one good thing about mistakes is that you can learn from them and make your future better, so take advantage of them.

When you look your best, you feel your best. Try a new style, do your makeup and hair differently all summer. The summer is the best time to experiment, so by the time you get back to school you know which looks you can rock and which ones you should leave behind without looking back. Hit the gym and get a healthy diet. There is no better way to get back at the guy who hurt you last semester than coming back to school with a hot body and a new level of confidence. You’ll be turning heads on Green Street by the time you get back to school.

Going The Distance

7/11/2012

Between exchanges, bar crawls, clubs, and other social activities on campus, some lucky ladies have found a man they feel worthy enough to hold the title of their boyfriend. It is easy to maintain a new relationship when you live within a ten minute walk from each other; grabbing dinner, having a movie night, or a night at the bars is the norm. When summer arrives, for many couples, distance becomes the new norm. Yes, distance is rough but it is nothing that a loving couple can’t overcome. There are three main factors that can save a relationship and keep the bond strong during the long, hot summer months.

Communication is key. It is important that you and your significant other take at least a few minutes every couple days to talk on the phone and catch up. There is only so much you can get out of a text; if you really want to feel connected with the man in your life, it will take picking up the phone or skyping. With a busy summer schedule full of work, internships, and school this may be difficult but you both need to work out a time to have a phone date here and there; it will make all the difference.

Why does tuition keep rising?

3/6/2012

Tuition rises at the University of Illinois each and every year for incoming students.  Last year the tuition was raised 6.9 percent; it was agreed that next year the tuition price would be raised another 4.8 percent for incoming freshman.  In hard economic times, many futures students and their families ask if the tuition raise is really necessary.

The university’s tuition is set by the Board of Trustees each year.  The university’s Office for Planning and Budgeting provides the Board of Trustees with the Background Information Concerning Financial Aid, a document containing the needed to set tuition prices.  According to the University of Illinois official website, this document includes institutional comparisons, instructional costs, explanations of differential tuition, state spending levels and details on financial aid.

Tuition is not the only expense rising.  Room and board at the university was raised 2,5 percent as well as student fees, which will now be $2,882.  Student fees cover building maintenance, student legal services, University organizations, and more.

Michael Hogan, the university’s president, has stated that the annual tuition increases have been going down; they are dependent upon state funding.  Luckily, for the students already enrolled at the University of Illinois, their tuition is locked at what they were paying their freshman year.

Is Chivalry Dead?

2/14/2012

To be chivalrous is to be valiant, generous and courteous.  Chivalrous menare marked by honor and are courteous, especially towards women.  In the times of knights and princesses to be chivalrous was a valued trait present in society.  Today’s society no longer concentrates on men saving the ‘damsel in distress’ or protecting the weak, but does this mean the concept of chivalry has disappear completely? Or can it be revised to a modern day version?

Many women today complain about being mistreated, disrespected, and offended by the actions of men in society.  Times have changed, but that does not mean that the concept of being a gentleman should.  At the same time are women expecting too much from men? After all, they are only human, and on a college campus they are still maturing.

Simple actions like pulling out a chair, giving up their own seat so a woman can sit down, or opening the car door are rarely practiced by younger men in society anymore.  Erin Lindbloom stated, “half the guys on campus basically slam doors in your face when entering a building.”  According to LaShaun Williams’ article “9 Reasons Why You Think Chivalry Is Dead When It Isn’t” men are trying to show more independence by not giving into what women necessarily expect from them.  Justin Wilcox stated, “Well I definitely still hold doors open for women, but I think it is just because guys are more self-centered these days.”

What's Next? The Search for an Internship

1/22/2012

For many, college is the best years of their lives..  It’s a time to experiment, be carefree, and live life to its fullest before going out into the real world.  Let’s face it, it would be great if we could all just stay in college and live the college lifestyle forever, but unfortunately for most, that really isn’t an option.  Internships are a great way to get connections and become prepared for when the real world approaches and college ends.
Internships provide students with a real work experience which will help students decide if their choice in major is really right for them and if they want to pursue it further.  Internships also help students make useful connections that they can use after they graduate to get a job.  Many employers will hire students who had an internship over those who have not simply because students with internships have had some experience in the field.
Luckily, the University of Illinois supplies many resources and opportunities for students looking for an internship.  The University actually encourages, and for some majors even requires, students to get an internship while they are still in school.  The Career Center is a major resource for students looking for an internship.  If a student goes to the Career Center’s website, www.careercenter.illinois.edu, there is a lot of useful information on why, how, and where to look for internships.  There is even an internship and job database to help students start looking for internships and jobs.  The quickest way to start the internship process is to actually go in to the career center which is open Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

How to Get Through Finals Week

12/3/2011

December brings many happy events such as winter break, Christmas and New Years Eve. But before any of us can experience the joys December has to offer we have to get through one thing – finals.  Just the word “finals” alone makes many college students cringe.  There are a few things you can do to make finals go as smoothly as possible.

1. Stop procrastinating and start studying.  There are several other things we all would rather do than study, but sitting down and hitting the books will pay off.  Try and start studying at least a week or two before your final.  Try and go over your notes every night for an hour or two.  This prevents you from cramming and you will not only remember the material better, but you will be a lot less stressed out while learning the material.

2. Form a study group.  Sometimes it is a lot easier and a lot more fun to learn the material with other people.  You also retain a lot more information by teaching the material to other students.  If you get together with some friends to study you can compare notes and go over lectures; one of you may have written something down that someone else in the group did not catch in class.

The University Makes Life A Little Easier

11/5/2011

The main purpose of my.illinois is to give University of Illinois students a place where all the information they need and want most about their education is all in one location.  Students are able to not only search, but register for classes, check their grades, check their university e-mail, look up their I-Card information or student account balance, access their NetFiles, look up student and faculty Directory information, and check the calendar of events, and have access to university announcements and news.  This may seem overwhelming and complicated to navigate, but the layout of the page is actually very simple.

The campus switched to this system to simplify things for students.  Students no longer have to go to several different websites to get access to their personal information.

At the top left corner of the page there are four tabs.  The home tab will take you to the main page where campus announcements and your own personal announcements are displayed.  You can also check your e-mail and the weather on this page as well.  Links to other campus websites are also shown so if what you need is not on my.illinois, you can still get there from the website.

Television vs. Reality

7/17/2011

Television romanticizes life in general.  Television tends to portray family life being much happier and loving than most people know it to be in reality.  It portrays friendship as an unbreakable bond between a happy group of people.  On television, love can usually conquer all.  Let’s face it, if life was really like it is portrayed on television, the world would be a much better place. Everyone would feel loved and accepted and life as we know it would be much simpler.

On shows like Full House, Eight Simple Rules or Gilmore Girls, family comes first.  All of these shows, and even more shows, show what most people would like to see a family to be like: loving, strong, happy and more.  Yes, there are problems that arise in these families, but the issues are handled with much more grace and care than they often are in reality.  Most families are not as happy or even as civil as the television families.

Marriages and relationships are definitely not like the relationships seen on television or in movies.  According to family.com, many women want their lovers to be like the romantic heroes seen on the big screen, but those expectations are hard to live up to.  In life, love really does not conquer all, people do not always end up together and people do get hurt.  Television really tends to only show people falling in love, not the drama that comes afterwards.  Television also shows love at first sight, which is very unlikely to actually happen; very few people experience this in reality.  Most people have to get to know a lot about each other before they can even develop feelings for the other person.

Campus Celebrity: Haley Musgrave

6/27/2011

The football and basketball games at the University of Illinois are always filled with excited fans filled with energy.  The poms team, the Illinettes, definitely help the crowd maintain its energy throughout the game.  They put on an outstanding performance at half time and also dance throughout the entire game.  The Illinettes make dancing at the game look effortless, but the reality is that each girl on the team is skilled, athletic and works very hard to dance so well for long periods of time.

Haley Musgrave is a shining member of the Illinettes. Haley is 19-years-old and is currently majoring in pre-education, but plans to switch to elementary education soon. Besides devoting several hours a week to dancing with the Illinettes, she is also a member of Alpha Xi Delta and the student Illinois Education Association National Education Association. Her Campus got the chance to talk to Haley about her experience with dance and the Illinettes.

HC- When did you start dancing?
Haley- I started dancing when I was three-years-old.

HC- Has anyone motivated you to dance?
Haley-  No, no one else dances in my family.  I motivate myself because I love to dance.

HC- What types of dance have you done?
Haley- I have done jazz, hip-hop, ballet, and then the poms team.

HC- What is your favorite out of all of those?
Haley- I like dancing with the poms team.

HC- When did you start dancing for a poms team?
Haley- My high school team was the first team I was on.  I was on the varsity team all four years of high school.

Land a Job to Get More Spending Cash

5/29/2011

Let’s face it, college is a great experience, but it can definitely empty your wallet. Summertime, however, is one of the best opportunities to earn money to support your college lifestyle.  With fewer or no classes, and a lot less stress, there is more time to work and earn some extra cash.

A lot of businesses are looking for seasonal employees, which is what most working college students would be categorized as.  Ice cream parlors, hardware stores, water parks, landscaping services, amusement parks, park districts and more look for seasonal help specifically. Seasonalemployment.com will actually  help you find a summer job in your area!

According to Dr. Phil, if you do not have a job, finding a job should be your job. Sadly, a job is not just going to fall into your lap.  Until you have a job, your days may be filled with getting applications, talking to hiring managers and going to interviews. Even though it may be boring and at times frustrating, it’s a necessary step in landing a job.

According to employmentguide.com, it’s imperative to research the company before the job interview.  Knowing about the company will show you actually care about it, and the employer will remember that.  Try to practice and go over commonly asked interview questions like, “Why do you want to work here?” or “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”  Being prepared will help the interview flow smoothly.  No matter what job you are applying for, even if it is flipping burgers, dress nicely to the interview. This also shows you care and that you are professional.
