This Broad's Abroad: Kenyon-Cape Town Showdown

4/5/2012

There are always certain attributes of any campus that make it unique and personal to the students there – that make Kenyon “Quintessential Kenyon” as the admissions office loves to say. The rural setting, Old Kenyon’s gothic architecture, small classes, Middle Path, and Georgia Nugent are all examples of things that are quintessentially Kenyon. Studying abroad this semester in Cape Town has introduced me to the attributes that are quintessentially UCT. So why not see what happens when we throw down the gauntlet on the two schools and go quintessentially head-to-head, Hunger Gamez style, to see which school triumphs on just how quintessential it is (say quintessential again). May the odds ever be in your favor, betches!

Winter Breakin' My Heart

12/5/2011

With the semester winding down and finals just around the corner (#struggles), a general dreariness is descending over Kenyon’s majestic campus. Sure, last Friday was probably the most socially packed night Kenyon has seen in years and WalMart has overdosed on Christmas decorations, but with those three 15-page-papers, 2 projects, 3 presentations and finals on the horizon, even a reasonably priced inflatable Santa Claus emerging from an outhouse struggles to cheer me up.  But even with the most horrible time of the year approaching, there is that light at the end of the tunnel: Winter Break. But is Winter Break always the escape we hope for?

For me specifically, living in the middle of effing nowhere presents its own challenges, but even those from bustling metropolises may find that winter break is simply just too much of a break (is that sacrilege to say right before finals?). My past two winter breaks at home have come and gone with a fairly obvious trend:

The first week home is spent mostly attempting to make up for all the sleep I didn’t get from Thanksgiving til the end of the semester. And watching all the episodes of Jerseylicious I fell behind on. The home-cooked meals and functional showers with real water pressure and temperature controls (!) are reviving.

Beyoncé Correspondent: Queen B's Most Noteworthy Side Projects

11/11/2011

As the self-proclaimed HerCampus Beyoncé correspondent (Caroline? Ellie? Get back to me on that), I find it necessary to recognize all that is glorious about Queen B in anticipation of Friday night’s all-campus celebration of her wonder. At the fierce age of 30-years-old, Beyoncé has not only made a name for herself as queen of the music industry and one of the most loved female performers ever, but she has also established an entire entertainment empire under her legendary name. The following list is an homage to all things B has accomplished outside her unparalleled recording career.

Best Fragrance: Heat by Beyoncé
Given that I have not smelled Beyoncé’s other two fragrances (or as she refers to them, parfums: http://www.beyonceparfums.com/), Pulse and Heat Rush, I kind of just feel like Heat is the obvious choice. Why? Because the commercial she filmed for it got BANNED from daytime TV in Europe. The Advertising Standards Authority issued this statement in response to her sizzling performance: “Beyoncé's body movements and the camera's prolonged focus on shots of her dress slipping away to partially expose her breasts created a sexually provocative ad that was unsuitable to be seen by young children. We considered that the ad should not have been shown before 7.30pm due to the sexually provocative nature of the imagery.” If I wasn’t going to buy it before this happened (yeah right), you can bet your ass that I and countless other women who secretly wish they were Beyoncé bought this the first chance they could get; catching the fever, indeed, Miss B. Lost and Found

9/30/2011

Among the colorful assortment of lost water bottles and long forgotten notebooks and sweatshirts that have become typical of the Olin-Chalmers Library lost & found box are hidden gems that provide a glimpse into the psyche of the Kenyon College student. At other schools in this great nation of ours, to see an abandoned computer or backpack in the library sends up red flags immediately: that person’s stuff is about to get stolen. At Kenyon, not so much. We pride ourselves on being a trusting and honest campus and are secure enough in our surroundings to leave our MacBooks in the library unattended for hours on end – mostly because 99% of the campus also has a MacBook. As current employees of library here at Kenyon, we’d like to share a few of our all-time favorite finds among the stacks and behind the desk.

Baby Bey-Z

9/19/2011

If it wasn’t obvious to anyone before the Video Music Awards on August 28 that Beyoncé is the biggest name in the game right now, it should be now. The second biggest name in the game? – Beyoncé’s unborn child, and this future god(dess) is threatening to take mom’s crown.

Beyoncé’s announcement at the VMAs that she and husband Jay-Z are expecting their first child instantly made that baby the most popular human in the world, and s/he is not even born yet. Twitter EXPLODED with the news of Beyoncé’s pregnancy, shattering previous records for “tweets-per-second” or “tps.” Let me put it into perspective for you: Michael Jackson’s death racked up 456 tps. The Royal Wedding: 3,966 tps (#suckitEngland), Beyoncé’s baby news: 8,886 tps. It even blew Osama Bin Laden’s death (5,106 tps) and the Women’s World Cup Final shoot-out (7,196 tps) out of the water, and we all know tweeters love to support #Amurica. This baby is DEFINITELY more famous than the four other members of Destiny’s Child combined (don’t forget LeToya and LaTavia). Basically what I’m trying to say is this kid is probably the most anticipated celebrity baby ever, and rightly so.
