Horrible Bosses: Collegiette Edition

4/17/2012

We’ve all heard stories from friends or older siblings of the insanity that can accompany having an absolutely no good, horrible, very bad boss - the outrageous demands, late hours, and scary office politics. With the semester rapidly coming to its end, looking for and securing a job or internship is a top priority for so many collegiettes and it helps to have some context about dealing with a new boss. It can be tricky, no doubt, working under someone that is not exactly friendly or welcoming but with these helpful pointers, you’ll be able to navigate even the most complicated office debacle with grace, poise, and ease.

Alicia Pettis: SGA Vice President Elect

4/4/2012

JMU’s SGA Major Elections only concluded this past Thursday and already the student body is excited about their newly elected executive officers. There’s a good chance you saw the candidates and their campaign teams around campus in distinctive t-shirts and handing out all kinds of promotional material on the Commons and the Quad. I was fortunate enough to get in touch with our student body’s next Vice President, Alicia Pettis. A sophomore sociology major from Fairfax, Virginia, Alicia gave me a glimpse of what she has in store for next year and how she plans to invest, innovate, and inspire:

Her Campus: What motivated you to run for an executive position in SGA?
Alicia Pettis: My involvement in SGA has not been just within the duties of my position as Secretary of Class of 2014. I have expanded my role by joining University Committees and being a part of the QEP (Quality Enhancement Plan) discussions. I found that I really enjoyed what Exec did, so I started going to Exec meeting every Thursday. It was a great experience to see how and why the big decisions that moved our organization were made. I figured that my love for Class Council events and the working Administration combined nicely to fit the Vice President position.

Kony 2012: Hype or Help?

3/20/2012

Going viral on Twitter, Facebook, and within the blogosphere seemingly overnight, Kony 2012 has made a huge impact, but retained a mysterious quality. You might be thinking, what is Kony 2012? Well, according to Jason Russell, the narrator and director of this 30 minute long video, Kony 2012 is the campaign sponsored by Invisible Children, a non-profit organization that is aiming to bring attention to Joseph Kony.

Kony is the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel force in Uganda. Kony 2012 is aiming to pressure the United States government to send aid to Uganda and for twenty ‘culture makers’ and twelve ‘policy makers’ to advocate for this cause. The viral video has been viewed approximately 79 million times on YouTube and is continuously being spread through various social media outlets.

Feeling Domestic? Try these Valentine’s Day Recipes!

2/17/2012

Cooking, for me, is an excellent stress reliever: You’re focused on a specific task and tuned into the details so you’re not worrying about that philosophy paper or that cute guy who hasn’t called you back. And that’s not even mentioning the delicious final product! Here are a few simple recipes, some inspired by Valentine’s Day, some not, to treat yourself and the people you care about too:

Four Words: Red Velvet Cheesecake Cookies

Healthy Sweet Potato Skins From 'Pinch of Yum'

Creamy Avocado Pasta...bonus, it's vegan!

Molten Chocolate Cakes if you're feeling adventurous

Chicken Fajitas, YUM

Play around the kitchen with your friends or significant other this Valentine’s Day and feel satisfied knowing you made a delicious meal and (hopefully) didn’t set anything on fire.

Not in the Mood for a Chick Flick?

2/13/2012

Valentine’s Day is without a doubt the time of year that the word “chick flick” is most over-used. Now, don’t get me wrong: I love a good chick flick. Those Movies that make you feel hopeful and make you inadvertently say, “Aw, oh my gosh” have their time and place, that’s for sure. But maybe this year, you can’t think of anything worse that watching a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. Check out “Drive,” an intense thriller that is surprisingly violent – more than I anticipated. Ryan Gosling’s stoic performance is the one thing will distract you away from allof the gore! Or consider renting  “Warrier,” the surprisingly well-reviewed movie about two estranged brothers that enter a Mixed Martial Arts tournament. Another classic stand by is “Saving Private Ryan,” one of, in my opinion, the best war movies of the 21st century. If you’re in the mood for something British, check out  “Run, Fat Boy, Run” – it was even directed by David Schwimmer (a.k.a. Ross from “Friends”!). These are just a few titles that you might not have considered but could be a perfect two-ish hour break from all of the Valentine’s Day hubbub.

College Relationships: How Easy Are They?

1/16/2012

If you really think about it, college is the prime time for meeting the opposite sex. There is no other time in your life than college when you’ll be surrounded by as many guys the same age as you as when you’re in your college years (and hey, it’s ok if it’s more than four!). Living on the same campus or in the same apartment building as these male collegians is a heady experience because for one thing it is the ultimate time for eye candy but it’s also filled with potential. Potential for what you might ask? As some of us may have learned, college is the time when just about anything goes with guys: friends with benefits? Sure! Dance floor make-out dude? Why not? “Study” buddy? Go for it! All of these things aren’t quite relationships but can lead into them. But what if you are in a committed relationship in college? Is it always as seemingly carefree and fun as these other arrangements our girlfriends, or that loud girl three desk down from you, always manage to have?

The Winter Break Bucket List

12/13/2011

Congratulations, you’ve done it! You made it through finals week with the cojones needed to ace that exam, finished that paper in time, and consumed enough Starbucks that the baristas know you by first name All that’s left is to travel home and fall into a thoroughly relaxing routine of catching up on your sleep and Hulu Plus account. But wait! Before you get into a winter break rut, remember all those things you really wanted to do. You know, like work out a few times a week, go out with your girlfriends, and hopefully, meet a cute guy to distract you from that fact that your parents think they can enforce your old curfew. Here are some of the top things to consider when you get home for winter break:

Uncovering A Diamond in the Rough: Hidden Gems Around Harrisonburg

11/18/2011

We’ve all heard it before: we live in a JMU ‘bubble.’  But it’s not the worst thing, right? Living and breathing your school comes naturally to some people because they want to soak in everything they possibly can during their college experience.  Sometimes it can become a rut though; correct me if I’m wrong collegiettesTM, but doesn’t it get a little stale doing the same thing every weekend?  (Maybe something about going out that relates specifically to JMU… I mean riding the DrunkBus to Stone Gate can get a little old.)  Change up your weekend routine and go on an adventure! Here are a few places in the Shenandoah Valley that are worth the drive...

Massanutten Resort
Any time of the year, this place has something to offer. Hit the links, ski the slopes, go tubing, or go to the waterpark, which three of my girlfriends and I did last Friday and let me just tell you, it was a BLAST! Not only were the water slides thrilling; the simulated surfing was hilarious and seriously worthy of video tapping the wipeouts. With generally affordable prices and season passes available and only a 15-minute drive from campus, this resort is an excellent mini vacation destination. (Massanutten Resort)

“So, What Happened?”: Looking at the ‘Could Have Been’

11/1/2011

Preparing for college can be like sensory overload: bright comforters! New clothes! So much to pack! Cute boys! New room!  Even with so many of these details surrounding us, advice that is passed down to us tends to stick and fills our ears with wisdom. Some of the advice I’ve received are such gems as never go to bed mad, call home once a week, and don’t drink grain alcohol punch. One that tends to be repeated is live without regrets. College never seems to be about regretting anything (except maybe ordering Chanello’s twice in one weekend); it’s more about soaking in everything that you can and living in the moment. The generally carefree college lifestyle fosters that, but what about regretting a missed opportunity? More specifically, what about regretting a missed relationship?

Must Haves at JMU!

10/18/2011

Let's face it: there are just certain things you need to have here at JMU. With the unpredictable weather, chilly classrooms, and hilly campus, our wardrobes have to be fashionable and functional too! Here are some of the staples that are in my closet I'd recommend have in yours too:
