A Bite Of Belgian Chocolate3/13/2013 |
We all have our favorite brands of chocolate; Twix, Snickers, Reeses, just to name a few. We can also easily indulge when we have a sweet tooth. I’m even guilty of having my own chocolate stash when I need a quick fix for my cravings. However, since I began my study abroad experience in Belgium, I’ve learned two essential lessons. First, Belgian chocolate is simply the best sweet treat I have tasted. During a trip to Brugge my friends and I went on a chocolate tour. Yes, as we toured the city we had a bite of different chocolates on the way. Brugge is a northwest city in the beautiful country of Belgium. With cobblestone roads, a canal streaming between houses and buildings inspired by mediaeval architecture, one can say Brugge is a typical European town, but one thing that sets Brugge, and many other Belgian towns apart from the rest is the chocolate. Throughout the tour and many chocolates later, I thought I would never eat another piece of chocolate again. We indeed indulged in a world of chocolate not even Willa Wonka knows about. |
Officially Unofficial in Dublin3/11/2013 |
The T-shirt orders, apartment crawl lineups and early morning breakfast plans with friends and visitors are U of I student’s plans for the first Friday of March every year. Built up with anticipation, Unofficial 2013 has already passed and now Spring Break plans are the primary focus. But what about everyone that is studying abroad? Because traveling to other countries can happen just about any weekend, not just during spring break, obviously heading to Dublin, Ireland for Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day was the best choice. I kicked off my Unofficial by heading to the Guinness factory with the Illinois students from my program, we even invited the students in our program from different Universities to join in on our Illini tradition. We learned about how Guinness is made, touring through the steps and history of Mr. Arthur Guinness, the owner of the Irish brew. After the tour, we wandered around Dublin exploring, and headed over for a traditional Irish dinner filled with bangers and mash, fish and chips, Guinness and Bulmers, an Irish cider. On Friday morning, everyone from my study abroad program headed out to the pubs to meet up with other Illinois students that made their way to Dublin for the weekend. We spent the afternoon catching up on our European adventures, listening to live Irish music and getting into the Irish culture. |
Her Campus Illinois Presents "Walking In A Winter Glamourland"12/4/2012 |
Winter has arrived and aside from the unusual warm weather, Her Campus’ Walking in A Winter Glamourland was the perfect kickoff to the holiday season. On Tuesday, November 27, the Her Campus Illinois staff and guests spent their evening in the second floor ballroom of the Illini Union to raise money for the Northwestern Settlement House in Chicago and enjoy campus entertainment, food and fun. The first 30 guests were welcomed with swag bags filled with all kinds of goodies including bareMinerals makeup kits, Victoria’s Secret PINK lanyards, Ageless perfume and Bonfyre sunglasses. As the live music played courtesy of DJ Jon Hahn, guests visited each of the booths where local businesses including IMPULSE magazine and EAT CU were promoting. Busy Wrists and Bekah Hakimian were selling their accessory products. Complementary Monster drinks, Chobani yogurt, and LUNA bars were among the homemade treats for guests to snack on as well. Senior Annadel Melendez said she enjoyed her time in the Glamourland and it was a great study break. “I was excited to have a Monster. I had a lot of work this week with finals coming up, so it was a nice pick-me-up,” she said. Monster, 5-Hour Energy and the all natural energy drink, Nawgawn were all available for guests and definitely boosted everyone’s holiday spirits. Performances of the night included 3Spot dance troupe, who featured a hip hop piece |
Lance Armstrong Stripped Of Titles11/8/2012 |
As I was walking down the main quad this past week, I noticed a student with a yellow shirt that read, “Run Strong, Live Strong.” Livestrong, a slogan made famous by world-renowned bicyclist Lance Armstrong, has brought courage and empowerment to individuals for the past 8 years. Lance Armstrong created the Livestrong Foundation after his victory over testicular cancer, and this charity continues to prosper thanks to the continued support of its founder, his sponsors and his fans. While the ideals of the Livestrong campaign are achievement and dedication, recently, the man behind the name has been stripped of his titles and accomplishments, going against everything the iconic yellow bracelets stand for. In August, Armstrong, winner of seven Tour de France titles, was accused of “doping” throughout his career. Armstrong initially denied the allegations, but he then abruptly changed his stance, falling strangely quiet on the issue while rumors continued to spread. According to the New York Times, Armstrong said, “There comes a point in every man’s life when he has to say, ‘enough is enough…For me, that time is now.” |
The C-U's New “It” Brand: Cuvvet10/20/2012 |
Earrings, bracelets and necklaces; accessories are a staple in every Collegiette's wardrobe. Imagine your career was based on shopping for whatever you wanted to add to your closet, and then making a profit to top it off. For two University of Illinois alumnae, this is their life. Class of 2010 graduates Jane Kim and Theresa Spencer created their very own online business, Cuvvet, this past June. Cuvvet started as a casual dinner conversation and a dream, but it soon turned into a reality as the two young women decided to quit their full time jobs as account executives in Chicago and take the risk of starting their own online business. “We were out to dinner and thought of an online business. We were discussing, and my idea was to start up a fashion merchandise website,” Kim said. Spencer, not necessarily having an exact idea how to start a business, agreed that selling fashion merchandise was a great plan. “Jane asked, ‘can we do fashion?’ I said, ‘let’s do it!’ Kim asked Spencer if she believed that they could do fashion, and Spencer said “let’s do it.” “That’s kind of how it happened,” Spencer explained. “It was really just one of those conversations people have all the time, but we actually went for it,” Spencer’s drive kept her going throughout the founding process of Cuvvet. “We’re passionate about it” Spencer said. “I know that this is definitely the direction I wanted to go in, and same with Jane. We have the same ambitions and ideas, and even in college, we weren’t the best friends, but it just happened. We clicked with this idea and I knew this would be a good partnership.” |
Chick-fil-A Controversy8/6/2012 |
Food. It’s a necessity. Not only to survive, but also an essential aspect in many socializing activities, business events and celebrations. Ironically enough, food, a staple in our society which brings people together, has torn others apart in the past week. The controversy between the Chick-fil-A fast-food chain restaurants and the opinions, religion, gay-rights and humanism have risen to a series of events. Taking a few steps back to 1967 when the first Chick-fil-A restaurant was established, Truett Cathy created a food chain of success which has grown to over 1,600 chains across the United States to serve what is known as “America’s Best Quick-Service Restaurant,” according to the official website, www.chick-fil-a.com and mission statement. Although this may be known as “America’s Best,” this may not stand what is best for America. Dan Cathy, son of Truett, currently holds the position as President of the company and also holds true to his Christian lifestyle. According to an article from The Christian Post, Cathy said on The Ken Coleman Show, “I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage. I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.’” Since Cathy’s comments were revealed, his supporters and opposers took action last week to support their own morals. |
Fashion Blog: DIY Clothing8/2/2012 |
Spending an afternoon working on Do It Yourself (DIY) projects and crafting may appear to be a trip back to the Girl Scout era of our generation, however, with websites such as Pinterest, YouTube and Tumblr these ideas have reconnected back into our daily activities. Creating files and favorite-ing pages on what catches attention alone can become a hobby in it-self. And how about the brave souls who actually make the attempt to create their own clothing? Three University of Illinois students have created their own version of the online DIY clothing ideas and vamped up their wardrobe for this summer. Casey Stabosz, an incoming sophomore, has spent her summer creating new articles of clothing for her closet. Ombre Shorts: Studded Shorts: |
Indoor Tanning vs. Spray Tanning6/23/2012 |
The kick-off to summer has arrived. Beach dates, pool parties and spending time outdoors will be on the list of many Collegiette’s’ agendas. With some fun in the sun this season, a few characteristics come with the summer territory; one in particular is a bronzed tan. With time off from schoolwork, tanning and relaxing become a part of the summer schedule. Avid tanners may even prepare for the main event during the spring by indoor tanning. While indoor tanning may be second nature for this generation of Collegiette’s, the new ban on indoor tanning for minors may change the way for the future. In Chicago, the City Council voted in favor to ban the usage of tanning beds for anyone under the age of 18. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Ald. Debra Silverstein (50th) led the way to secure the ban. The decision was made to fine whomever violates this up to $250. Spray-on tans, bronzers and private tanning devices were not included in the ban, as stated. Aside from the city of Chicago, the state of Illinois allows minors over the age of 14 to use indoor tanning beds with the consent of a legal guardian. The Nation Conference of State Legislators states that the restriction of minors using tanning beds under the age of 18 with parental consent is the law in most cases across the nation, but it is legally banned for minors in California and Vermont under legislation. http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/health/indoor-tanning-restrictions-for-minors.aspx |
