Being an EMT in College: 3 Collegiettes Tell All

1/12/2013

When the radio goes off, they respond at a run. It can go off anytime: in class, at dinner, while they're sleeping. And they run wherever the dispatch tells them. They run to the ambulance, or directly to the scene, if it's closer, carrying a jump bag full of supplies on their backs. They run toward destruction: chem lab explosions, car accidents, broken bones, and blood. And when they arrive, there's no time to hesitate. They simply do their job, treating injuries as they find them. And when it's all over, they return to their daily lives as college students.

Many collegiettes dread getting sick on the same day as a major exam, but for students who serve as volunteer emergency medical technicians (EMTs), they're also hoping someone else doesn't get sick. The life of a collegiate EMT is a stressful one, and walking around in an unflattering uniform is only the least of their worries. Throughout the course of a regular school day, collegiette EMTs have to be ready to respond at a moment's notice to an injured or sick patient on campus and balance their schoolwork and social lives at the same time.

So what does it take to be a member of an emergency medical service (EMS) team in college? Her Campus spoke to three student EMTs to get the full scoop on everything from an average day to the most serious medical scenarios they've faced.

Meningitis: How To Protect Yourself From This Deadly Illness in College

12/22/2012

When Ashley Lee got sick a month into her freshman year of college, she thought she had the flu. A cold was going around campus, and she had the same symptoms as many of her friends in the dorms at Indiana State University. But by the second day of her illness, she had developed a headache and was feeling weak. Her father got worried, and brought her to the hospital, where she continued to get worse, breaking out in a rash across her limbs and torso. Still, the doctors had no idea what was wrong. It wasn't until Ashley was transferred to a second hospital that she got her diagnosis: she had meningococcal meningitis.

That was just the start of Ashley's battle. The doctors prescribed antibiotics to fight the infection, but the disease had progressed significantly already. "I had kidney failure, my heart stopped twice, I had both feet amputated, over 20 surgeries, 3 fingers amputated, and 40 percent of my body is scarred and has skin grafting on it," Ashley tells us. "I was in the hospital for 3 months. It nearly took my life, and it should have. They told my parents to prepare for the worst but to hope for the best."

Thankfully, Ashley survived, and went on to graduate in August of 2011. Now she's on a mission: she wants to make sure that no one else has to suffer the way she does. She shared her story with Her Campus to help raise awareness of this deadly disease, and to help inform collegiettes everywhere about how to prevent meningitis.

How to Prevent Razor Burn Down There & How to Treat Razor Burn

12/14/2012

Shaving "down there" always seems like a good idea at first - that is, until all those little unwanted red bumps show up! Whether you're planning on just cleaning some stray hairs around the edges or going for a more complete effect, it often doesn't turn out as smooth as you hoped. But that stinging, itchy rash isn't completely inevitable. We're here with all the best tips to help you prevent razor burn down there!

First of all, let's talk about what razor burn is. Dragging a razor across your skin gets rid of hair, but also removes the top layer of skin, and it causes irritation. It can get red and inflamed, and be fairly unpleasant, though it usually clears up if left alone for a day or two. If you have constant razor burn, though, you might also notice some razor bumps. Razor bumps are when the hair follicles get infected, and they can be really painful! The pores get clogged with dead skin and fill with bacteria, and they sometimes resemble pimples in your bikini region. Both of these conditions, though, are totally preventable and treatable!

Use a good razor

Royal Hoax: New Results in Investigation of Nurse Jacintha Saldahna's Death

12/13/2012

Last week, after the happy announcement of Prince William and Kate's pregnancy, the royal family was saddened with some darker news. Two DJs looking to have some fun called St. James Hospital where Kate was staying, and impersonated Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles in order to gain private information about Kate's condition. The first person to answer the phone was Jacintha Saldahna, who put the DJs through to Kate's personal nurse.

The prank call was aired, bringing worldwide attention the prank, but no one's laughing now. Just a few days later, Saldahna was found dead. New information released after her autopsy on Tuesday reveals that Saldahna was found hanging in her living quarters at the hospital, CNN reports. She reportedly left notes for her family members, who say that the shame of being involved in a worldwide news scandal would have caused her shame, according to The Daily Mail.

Miley Cyrus' New Style and Crazy Performance

12/11/2012

Miley Cyrus still can't be tamed, and she is setting out to prove it to the world. In her most recent walk on the wild side, Miley took this stage this past Sunday at 1:30 am, performing in concert with Israeli dubstep artist DJ Borgore. Miley collaborated with DJ Borgore on a track called "Decisions" that dropped in November. Check out the music vid where they smear cake on everything, including each other!

The big news, though, had less do with her music, and everything to do with the new style she debuted on stage: Miley was scantily clad in a revealing cut-out crop top, high waisted leather pants, and thigh-high leopard print boots. Her short hair was cropped even shorter, and she also had a chain that wrapped around her stomach and neck... Yikes!
