Husky Startup Challenge: The Winners!

4/25/2012

Northeastern’s Entrepreneurs Club helped make some students’ business dreams come true at their fourth ever Demo Day last Thursday. The club hosts the Husky Startup Challenge (HSC) each semester to give students the opportunity to develop their own business ventures.

This year saw a spectacular turnout with over 300 attendees, including President Aoun. Over $5,000 was awarded to multiple groups, which will be used to finance the proposed enterprises.

1st place was awarded to  freshman Preston Turk, whose Lens Caddy allows photographers to safely carry multiple camera lenses.

Her Campus Northeastern is proud to say that staffer Hana Nobel’s hip-hop ice cream truck,  Scoop There it Is won 2nd place and $1,500! The “Scoopers” also won 10 hours of free legal advice that they plan to use to get started..and then hope to buy a truck soon after. They’ll be demoing in the Boston community this summer and applying for permits and licenses for next year. The group served “Milli Vanilla” and “PB and Jay-Z” ice creams at the event.

HardBoil, the vision of Marty Chang, took home the 3rd place prize. Chang’s idea is a software tool that helps IT companies build applications

Siobhan O'Dwyer: Model Behavior

4/23/2012

Name: Siobhán O’Dwyer (“It’s pronounced ‘Shuh-vahn,’ like in Petey Pablo’s Freek-a-Leek… or you can just call me Shiv”)
Major: Pharmacy
Hometown: Reppin’ the NY capital city--Albany, New York.
Most likely found: Out on the roof top terrace of Curry (“The closer to the sun, the better!”)

Claim to fame: Representing Her Campus Northeastern as the newest face of Ann Taylor. Well not exactly, but soon you can see her on AnnTaylor.com! Siobhán was recently picked as one of five NU girls to be featured in Ann Taylor’s online look book. The site features student models from campuses all over the country, offering fashion inspiration and career advice for collegiettes entering the job market.

Favorite thing about the photo shoot: The rain literally put a damper on the day, but we used umbrellas to take fun pictures outside. It made the pictures seem more realistic for a college student in Boston. We all know it can be a struggle to stay stylish in rain boots!

Previous modeling experience: I used to work for Abercrombie & Fitch, and I was featured in the store’s look book. But every single model had to wear jeans and a tank top, so it wasn’t exactly about standing out and taking fashion risks. The photo shoot with Ann Taylor was great because I got to pick my own clothes and take photos all around campus.

Biggest fashion mistake: Wearing Uggs with a denim miniskirt, crimping my hair, or when I wore my white pharmacy lab coat and heels for Halloween last year… I swear I’m learning from my mistakes!

7 Fab Foods for Finals

4/20/2012

One too many a collegiette knows the embarrassment of having her stomach growl loudly in an otherwise silent room during an exam. During one memorable test, a TA actually asked me to move my seat because I couldn’t stop laughing at my friend beside me while her stomach screamed out in hunger. This finals season, don’t get caught with your belly empty! Fuel up with these seven foods that not only satisfy your hunger but also don’t taste like cardboard.

Husky Startup Challenge

4/9/2012

Northeastern prides itself on the ingenuity of its students, many of whom go on to create huge names for themselves with their inventive business ventures. Ever hear of Twitter? Napster? Both co-founders of these famous enterprises are Northeastern alumni (the latter didn’t actually graduate, and his company got shut down for piracy issues, but still, Napster was huge!) Huskies get the opportunity to co-op all over the world, learning from the greatest entrepreneurs of today. In 2011, the Princeton Review named NU one of the top 12 entrepreneurial colleges in the country, so it comes as no surprise that our school has its very own start-up challenge, aptly named the “Husky Start-up Challenge” (HCS).

Northeastern’s Entrepreneurs’ Club hosts the challenge every semester, which began in 2010. The competition gives students the chance to turn their business ideas into reality. Students submit their ideas, create business plans over a series of boot camp workshops, and finalists are selected to present on Demo Day. Remember science fairs in middle school, where geeky kids with braces showed off their homemade baking soda volcanoes and theorized the effect of classical music on plant growth? Demo Day is like that, only so much better. On Thursday, April 12th from 7 to 9 pm in the Curry Student Center West Addition, 18 groups will show off their business ideas in hopes of winning $5,500 in cash prizes to make their entrepreneurial dreams come true.

Getting Down to Business with Ann Taylor

4/4/2012

On Monday April 2nd, HC Northeastern joined Ann Taylor, Delta Phi Epsilon, and Haute Fashion Club for “Getting Down to Business with Ann Taylor.” The event was an exclusive information session that gave ladies the chance to review their resumes with the help of Northeastern’s Career Services. Guest speaker, Annie Wang, co-founder and CPO of Her Campus, gave tips on how to make it in a male-dominated business world, told us about her experiences as an entrepreneur and what it's like to co-found such a major publication. Panera provided delicious treats, and HC Northeastern’s President, Karlee Stewart, showed us how to dress for success with the help of Ann Taylor’s spring looks. The event also acted as a model casting call for Ann Taylor’s College Look Book! It was an elegant and informative evening. Special thanks to Karlee and her Ann Taylor rep partner Amruta Garikaparthi for making the whole thing possible!
