Simply Me. . . .It's the Best Way to Be!

10/27/2012

In addition to loads of homework, tons of projects and mandatory events, finding one’s niche is another important aspect of college. Getting involved in extracurricular organizations and feeling that sense of belonging is vital to making the most of a student’s college career. So maybe you’re not a sorority girl, or UGA Heroes is way too big for you to feel as if you’re making an impact; luckily there’s an organization that’s just right.

Samantha German, a junior majoring in Digital Broadcast Journalism, decided to take on the task of creating the organization, Simply Me, for young ladies at the University of Georgia focused on sisterhood, service and self-respect. It’s not a sorority, so no need to stress over Rush. This organization is all about accepting oneself and creating a unique bond.
While encouraging the development of lasting friendships with a diverse group of young ladies and self-improvement this organization also plans to work towards giving back to the surrounding area and making a long-lasting impact in the Athens community.
Simply Me is dedicated to women's empowerment and community service through enriching programs and service initiatives. But most importantly, it’s more focused on its members and how it can help students grow as successful women.
Look out for future programs from this outstanding program next semester and you will be amazed by their incredible impact on campus!
For more information, feel free to visit Simple Me’s website at www.simply-me.org.

Ready or Not Spring Break is Near

2/23/2012

During your college career, there are moments you look forward to and others that you rather not bring up ever again. Luckily, Spring Break is a highlight for almost every college student. It’s the time where you tone up, eat healthy, and enjoy a week of fun with your closest friends. It’s also a time where you relax during the day and party all night long without a care in the world. Ready or not bulldogs, Spring Break is right around the corner.
Whether you decide to stay at home and spend some quality time with your family or visit the hottest vacation spots or beaches, you’ll definitely need a couple of things to have a memorable Spring Break.

Friends
To guarantee a fun-filled Spring Break consider getting in contact with your closest friends. Due to different schools having different Spring Breaks, try to plan a trip that incorporates a few days from you and all of your friends’ breaks. Even if it’s just a three-day road trip or a weeklong vacation, with a little effort you can plan an unforgettable trip.

Money
Like most things in life, money is a deciding factor for Spring Break plans. To offset some of the cost or help your fund, there are many money-making opportunities around campus including the dining hall, the Calling Center, and the main bookstore. By ensuring you have ample funds, you have the ability to splurge a little bit, and don’t have to sit anything out with your friends. Make sure to calculate in travel costs, hotel costs, food allowance and extra money for souvenirs or unexpected side trips. Believe it or not, there’s still enough time to find a job and make a little extra cash.

A Single Girl's Survival Guide: 99 Problems but A Valentine Ain't One

2/10/2012

It’s almost February 14th, which means you’re probably making reservations for you and your boyfriend, finding the perfect outfit for your special dinner, and scouring to find your man a gift. Well for the rest of us (the single ones) we’re relaxing and hanging with our friends, spending our money on ourselves, and trying to figure out how to take our mind off of this dreaded holiday.

Valentine’s Day is a day all about love, happiness, and being extremely cheesy. But until last year, I wasn’t exactly sure how to enjoy this romantic holiday alone. If you’re anything like me, single, you’re extremely annoyed because you’re forced to watch the campus’s sappiest couples overdoing PDA, forced to watch your sorority sisters receive gifts from their long-distance boyfriends and forced to watch your roommate cuddle with their loved one. For me, it’s just another year without a Valentine. But who said not having a Valentine is a bad thing? Sure, it’s annoying and it can be depressing but that’s only because you have no clue how to spend “National Couples Day” alone. Fortunately, you don’t have to sit in your dorm room drowning in your tears on this dreaded holiday.

According to my classmates and friends, Valentine’s Day can take on many definitions. Ranging from “Single’s Awareness Day” to “A Corporate Conspiracy”, either way it’s an acknowledged holiday worldwide. However, for the lucky few that aren’t in relationships, we have a pessimistic view on the holiday. Don’t! Wear the boldest shades of red, the brightest shades of pink. Make your friends know that you are aware its Valentine’s Day and you’re perfectly fine with it. The best way to get over being alone on this day is to just be confident in yourself and where you are in your romantic life.

The Fun Doesn't Have to End in Athens

12/13/2011

Its holiday season! Which means fall semester has ended and your month of relaxation has begun. Most college students are hesitant to return home to their parents as moving back home for a couple of weeks is often seen as a difficult transition. Despite the freedom you received once you moved away, don’t forget all of the fun things you did before you came to college and all the fun opportunities available during the Winter Break.
The month of December is the time of year when you get a chance to relax and spend time with your family. Unfortunately, leaving all the fun of your new life at school can be a little tricky. Luckily, there are still ways to have fun at home.

1.     Family Night
Since August, many students haven’t spent much quality-time with their families. By devoting a night for your family, you can catch up, share embarrassing college stories, play board games, prepare a delicious meal or even watch movies. You can never spend too much time with your family. So take advantage of this break and try to dedicate a day out of each week to spend with the people you love the most. The best time is family time.

2.     Caroling
Sounds crazy, right? Winter Break is the best time to try something new. Going door-to-door singing Christmas carols with friends can be as fun as you make it. Don’t worry about the embarrassment that may go along with it. Contact all of your high school friends and neighborhood friends and sing your heart out with the people you miss the most.

Ways to Relax During Finals

12/6/2011

With finals right around the corner, students often feel overwhelmed as if there’s not enough time in the day to complete everything while saving time for themselves. But that’s not true! Studying nonstop and stressing yourself out is not the way to finishing off the school year, but it’s a definite way to bomb your final exams.
While students prepare to pull all-nighters, study all day at the Miller Learning Center, and overindulge in caffeinated beverages, there’s still a little time in the day to relax and multiple ways to have fun.

1. Cook or Grab a Snack
With long study hours and all-nighter cram sessions, many students forget to eat, or decide not to. Although you shouldn’t indulge in snack foods while studying, eating something is better than nothing at all. Try to stock up on fruits and vegetables to snack on during finals week. Not only are they healthier for you but they also provide you with more energy than sugary treats. Cooking can also be seen as a great stress reliever, as well as being a great way to try out a new recipe. Don’t forget to take some time out of your day, group study sessions, or whatever it may be to visit the dining hall or create a delicious meal with friends.

2. Visit Ramsey
Working out is a great way to relax yourself during finals week, while getting in shape as well. You don’t have to spend all hours of the night at the gym, but a quick 30-minute power workout will definitely release some tension and help you stay fit. An alternative would be taking your studying notes and flashcards with you to the gym, so you can study while working out. Due to the increased blood flow, studying while working out is often encouraged since you’re more alert and retaining more information at the same time.
