Jaselle Yrizarry-Pabon
Jaselle Yrizarry-Pabon ’11 is a major in Growth and Structures of Cities (a fancy way of saying Urban Studies) at Bryn Mawr College. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Jaselle loves her New York sports, enjoys Broadway musicals, and takes pleasure in exploring new restaurants – although her family kitchen should be amongst Zagat’s top rated. At Bryn Mawr, she sings with the Night Owls a cappella group, is a member of InterVaristy, and serves as a contributing writer for the Bi-Co News. This past summer Jaselle served as a marketing intern at The Clinton Foundation. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching movies and television shows, singing and listening to music, and going to sports venues. Jaselle believes that it is important to laugh, enjoy life, and have fun! Some things on her To-Do List are to bungee jump, sky dive, travel as much as she can, take a road trip across the U.S., and own a restaurant one day.

The "XOXO" Music Playlist2/14/2011 |
After watching last week’s Glee’s Valentine’s Day episode, the truth is that every girl secretly loves the idea of having a boy like Artie, Puck, or Blain who can sing to them on this special day. Unfortunately, many of our significant others lack the musical abilities to serenade us, or we just haven’t found that special someone yet. So to make up for this loss, my gift to you on this special day of love, I have created a special “XOXO” playlist of songs we love by the boys we love. From Disney's Aladdin to Justin Timberlake, Happy Valentine’s Day! 1. Disney's "A Whole New World" - Aladdin It probably makes you laugh, but it is a classic love song from our generation. Think about it. We were all a bunch of three to five year old girls... flying carpets, travels, and a cute prince was all we could think about when it came to love. 2. "Are you Lonesome Tonight" - Elvis Presley Valentine's Day would not be complete without the musical talent of Elvis. Also known as "The King," Presley had many women, including our mothers, swooning over his beautiful voice, sexy hip shaking, and beautiful blue eyes. 3. THE boy band. "This I Promise You" 'N Sync I apologize for all you Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees fans, but 'N Sync was the best boy band during our teen years. With sick harmonies, great moves, and looks from Justin and JC, who wouldn't want to have these guys sing to you? They are so good, that we have to see them live. Listen to JC... my first Valentine's crush. |
Valentine's Day Stories2/14/2011 |
"During my junior year of high school, my boyfriend at the time got his best friend to put rose petals and a card inside my trumpet case before I got to band on valentines day. When I got to band that day, I opened my case and immediately got upset because I thought someone had been playing around and I had to audition for first chair at states that weekend. After I realized that it was for valentines day and the card was from my boyfriend I was happy. Needless to say, he didn't mess with my musical instruments on any other valentines occasions." A.S. 2011 "I was abroad last spring, and one of my closest friends on the program had a big crush on me. He had not told me yet, but everyone knew it. We became close because of our shared interests, for example our obsession with dark chocolate. He had to fly home to England right before Valentine's day, and brought home about 5 bars of Green & Black's extra dark chocolate and on Valentine's day sneaked them into my room as a surprise. It was a really cute thought, because we couldn't get Green & Black's in the country we were studying and he knew it was my absolute favorite. It wasn't flashy or dramatic, but it was romantic because it was personal, thoughtful and just adorable." K.T.* 2011 |

Date: Saturday, February, 12, 2011 Dr. Helene Gayle, the 2011 Katharine Hepburn Medalist, will visit Bryn Mawr to talk to students about her work in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, first as an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and later at the Gates Foundation, as well as her current work as the president and CEO of CARE, an international humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. At CARE, Dr. Gayle has worked to reposition the organization's programs in a variety of ways, including a focus on community-based efforts working towards women's empowerment via education, work opportunities, and HIV/AIDS prevention. CARE, echoing Nicholas Kristof’s words at Bryn Mawr’s Heritage and Hope conference in September 2010, focuses on women, believing they are the linchpin of social and economic advancement in poor communities and nations.
