Tyler Liberty: The Newly Elected SG President

5/9/2013

It is a coveted position.  An authority unlike any other at TCNJ. A person becomes more than a name or number in a class – they become the face of the student body.  And every year it changes.  You may be wondering to whom this role belongs.  Meet Tyler Liberty: The new Student Government President.

HC TCNJ sat down with Liberty to discuss his goals, beliefs and reasons behind his ambition to lead the students at the College.

HC TCNJ: Tyler, tell us a little about yourself and the roles you play on campus already.

Tyler Liberty:  I'm a Junior English Major, planning to pick up a second major in
Chinese as well. Extra-Curricular wise I am the President of  Student
Government, and involved in Res Life, Circle K, International Studies
Club and the Leadership Development Program.  I also plan and oversee
Homecoming at TCNJ.

HC TCNJ: What made you want to be SG President?

TL: I wanted to be the next SG President because with the last name
Liberty, who wouldn't want to serve in office? In all seriousness, I
wanted a chance to give back to the students who have made my time at
The College of New Jersey so amazing. Advocating on behalf of students
is an opportunity that I couldn't pass up, and I look forward to
representing the Student voice.

HC TCNJ Seniors Say Goodbye

5/7/2013

Her Campus TCNJ has seen girls come and go over the years that it has been on our campus.  With only a week left of school and only two until graduation, it is scary to think that this experience is over for our seniors.  Though we may be leaving, it is important to remember that we have all become a part of something bigger than us and we have impacted HC TCNJ just as much as it has impacted us.  Here are a few thoughts from our senior e-board members as they prepare for graduation, reflect on their years here and leave a little advice for the underclassmen members of this fantastic online magazine.

Dear HC TCNJ,

As a senior, there have been so many things that have impacted my college experience.  My classes, my professors, my jobs/internships and, of course, my friends.  But Her Campus TCNJ did something that may have been a little more important for me: while working as a writer, section editor and then Editor-in-Chief/Campus Correspondent, I truly gained a passion for this industry.  I get chills thinking about my future now and I owe it to my Her Campus experience.  It's where it all started for me and it will always have a place in my heart.

Drinking Lessons from Texts From Last Night

4/17/2013

Our college years are about making memories with friends we will never forget.  But while making those memories, we might encounter a few nights that we will never remember.  We may drink one too many drinks, swap spit with someone who magically turned into someone else by sunrise and may even text our parents thinking they were our BFFs. So before going out tonight, tomorrow or this weekend, HC TCNJ is here to give you advice on not embarrassing yourself while you’re intoxicated – and Texts From Last Night is here to help.

(319): You can see my drunken state get worse with each picture.

Throughout the night, you and your friends are going to want to document everything from the cute outfit you wear and the first drink of the night to the moment you decide you cannot wear your heels anymore and that the bathroom might actually make a great bedroom for the night.

Remember that when you drink, your perception is impaired. Leave the cameras at home to prevent taking embarrassing photos of yourself.  Also, I am sure your Facebook friends – even those who have never met you – want to see how your night went, but trust me, future employers do not.  Save your rep and don’t upload.

Who Runs the World, Girls! Christina Kopka: President of TCNJ's Student Government

2/27/2013

Senior Christina Kopka is just like any other student here at TCNJ. The marketing and Spanish double major can be seen taking the same classes as you and me. She can be found eating in Eickhoff and running programs for Reslife. The Community Advisor is also often seen running tours as an Ambassador around campus.  But Christina holds one very different and powerful position on campus that goes above and beyond: she is the President of our Student Government.

Although the United States has not seen a female leader yet, TCNJ has.  Christina is not the first female SG president and she surely will not be the last.

"I believe that the last female SG President was about 5 years ago," Christina said in an e-mail interview. "There were a few others in the past as well, such as Heather Fehn, who currently works in President Gitenstein's office."

Past SG presidents - both male and female - have gone on to do great things in their lives, such as joining Teach for America, or like Heather Fehn, continuing on with college politics.  But it has not always been as easy for the females in this high-powered position.

"After I was elected, I feared that I would not be taken seriously as a female leader on campus," said Christina. "Looking back, the fact that I felt the need to prove myself as a female leader indicates that sadly,  differences do still exist between how males and females are perceived in these types of roles."

MTV's Catfish's Nev Schulman Tells It Like It Is to TCNJ

2/18/2013

There is one thing that almost everyone has in common – we are all searching for love.  Whether it be the old-fashioned meet-cute ways of the movies or the exciting and mysterious ways of the internet, we all strive to love and be loved.

But what happens when we aren’t sure if the person we love is really the person they say they are?  This is where Nev Schulman of MTV’s hit show Catfish comes into play.

After falling for a girl on the internet only to find out she wasn’t who she said she was, 28-year-old Nev has committed his life (well kind of) to helping others figure out if they have fallen in love with a “catfish” or not. (There are more fish in the sea, right?)

But before season one comes to an end tonight, Nev sat down with Her Campus TCNJ and the rest of the College at this semester’s Welcome Back Lecture brought to us by CUB.  Nev offered us advice on life, love and the ways of social media.

“I think we are just sort of getting to the heart of an important issue,” said Nev. “We all continue to spend more and more time online and the technology continues to replace physical reality in a lot of things.”

Nev explained how so many people in today’s society depend on the internet as a means for connecting, but that it is affecting all of us in more way than one.

“This has completely inspired me to really look at, discuss and consider the implications of social media, connectivity and the implications of how we all live our lives both online and off. [My experience] affected me personally and how I choose to interact with the people around me.”

Surviving the Day After the Super Bowl

2/4/2013

Let’s face it: Super Monday is not an official holiday yet, so we all have to get back to grind after our Sunday Funday.  But how do we get through it when there are so many things lingering from the night before?  Her Campus TCNJ is here to help you remedy all of the Super Bowl aftermath with a few tips for all your issues.

1. The Hangover.  Drink a little too much last night?  The beer hit you a little harder than expected? According to Shape magazine, simply rehydrating is the best hangover remedy out there.  Be sure to pack some Alka Seltzer in your bag before you head out to work or class.  And if you don’t have any, try some ginger ale and crackers.  Bananas also work wonders.  Be prepared though because, trust me, you don’t want to be that person to take off the day after the Super Bowl.

2. The Extra Pounds.  Chips, dip, pizza, wings, beer, cake.  The list of food you probably ate the night before goes on and on.  According to the Calorie Count Council, Americans probably ate about 11.2 million pounds of potato chips yesterday.  So how do we start working off this weight?  Try something easy like yoga or pilates.  Both are relaxing to help you recover if you are stressed from the game or hungover.  You can easily find videos to follow on your TV or computer.  Try DoYogaWithMe.com, for free yoga classes that you can stream in HD right in your own home.

How She Got There: Locke Hughes, Assistant Editor at Woman's Day Magazine

1/21/2013

As collegiettes, we are always looking for advice on how to make it in the "real world" once our time in college is finished.  And who better than someone who was in our shoes to help us out!  Read about Locke Hughes, the Assistant Editor at Woman’s Day magazine and how she was able to figure it all out!

Name: Locke Hughes

Age: 24

Job Title: Assistant Editor at Woman’s Day magazine

Undergraduate Degree: University of Virginia ’10, English Literature Major

What does your current job entail?  Can you describe your typical day?

LH: I do a little bit of everything here. About 60% of my job consists of researching, pitching, reporting, writing and editing articles for the front-of-book and money sections of the magazine. I cover a range of topics, including savings advice, profiles of entrepreneurs who’ve started interesting companies (like a swim school franchise or a self-serve dog wash), or women who are making a difference in their communities as volunteers.  It’s so thrilling and rewarding to find these “real” women across the country who are doing extraordinary things, and to help their stories come to life on the page.
