Her Campus Bentley Riding in Style with Kickboard Campus Scooters

9/30/2012

The awesome people over at Kickboard Campus sent our president, Kathryn Burgner, and our EVP of Editorial, Olivia LeClair some AWESOME kickboard scooters to ride around campus! They are so much fun and are reminiscent of the scooters we used to ride as kids! Check out their Facebook page.

Here is Kathryn testing out her new scooter in the Bentley Women's Center:

Kathryn and Olivia rode the scooters around the Her Campus Bentley #BentleyVotes event, which helped them to get from end of the Student Center to another in a matter of second. They were SO handy for running to the mailstop or to other buildings on campus when picking up stuff for the event.

Kathryn loves riding her scooter so much that she's able to try out some tricks on it!

We let our friends Buddy (President of Bentley Student Government Association) and Brian Shea (Junior Class Cabinet) take a spin on our scooters while they were playing "Uncle Sams" for our event. So much fun!

Thank you, Kickboard Campus! hcxo

Bentley Homepage: Is it right when everything else is wrong?

9/15/2012

Despite all of the new Bentley branding initiatives happening around us, there have been a few things that have stayed the same – the general look of the Bentley website being one of them.

However, this month, the homepage has a new image, which many have mixed views about. The image (screenshot below) promotes the Bentley Global Business Ethics Symposium by showing the image of a businesswoman crossing her fingers behind her back and a businessman shaking her hand. The statement, “doing right, when everyone else is doing wrong” is written on the image.

Some people, both within the Bentley community and outside, don’t see anything wrong with the image and think it is not unusual.

Others feel that the image represents a negative view about the current issues of sexism and a minority of women in the business world. (To clarify: from their perspective and in their opinion, the image shows the woman breaking rules while the male is doing “right”, unknowing of the woman’s poor ethical decision to lie in the exchange.)

Why is this picture and statement combo controversial to some and seemingly average to others?

How might individual’s views of the homepage change if the people in the image were of different social backgrounds? For example, of different races, levels of ability/disability, sexual orientations, or religions. What if the picture was of an African-American person crossing their fingers behind their back?

TaxiFareFinder: A Bentley Student's Must-Have App

5/8/2012

Whether you’re stranded in Harvard Square (thank you shuttle), new to an area, on vacation or just trying to figure out whether or not the taxi driver you had after Skellig ripped you off the night before – you have to check out TaxiFareFinder.

TaxiFareFinder estimates the cost of your cab ride quickly and accurately by analyzing local taxi rates, driving habits of people in the area, traffic info and the extra costs that always seem to be tacked on at the end of your ride. It even takes into consideration a typical tip, so you know exactly what a cab ride will cost.

If you have an iPhone you can also download the free iPhone App, TaxiFinder, so that you can access this info whenever and wherever you need it. The App will track your current location and just requires you to select or type in where you’re heading next. It will even bring up a list of local taxi companies you can call and the reviews of those companies from Yelp.

So here’s the really cool part. Recently, the site launched college specific pages on its website and Bentley was one of the schools chosen to be a part of the launch. Thanks to student feedback, the Bentley Fare Calculator contains points of interest that you always seem to find Bentley people hanging around - Harvard Square, Glow, Lower Campus, Skell, wherever!

The same set up exists for Boston, so you can easily figure out how much it would cost to get to your favorite city spots from campus.
