My New Home

4/23/2012

We almost made it. This is the home stretch. 5 days, people, 5 days. Now I realize to an outsider it sounds like I am celebrating release from prison, but really it is just until the last day of classes. I loved my freshman year at Lehigh.I made friends this year that I truly believe will be my friends for life.  I am torn between feelings of longing for this year to never end, and an unwavering desire to get this school year over with. When I leave campus in a few weeks, in the end I believe my desire to never leave South Mountain will win out. There are a plethora of things I am going to miss about Lehigh, so for space I will only discuss my top few.

1. Having other people do your dishes. Let’s be honest, walking up to the windows at Cort and Rathbone and being able to hand your dishes through to the other side is one of the best things about college. Not having to worry about loading and unloading the dishwasher, putting dishes away, etc. is something I will desperately miss when I get up from dinner and am reminded by my father that there are no “cleaning fairies” to pick up after me.

2. Linderman. Cliché though it may be, I actually really enjoy spending time in Lindy. The architectural details, the stained glass, the high ceilings, it all takes me back to a different time.  Maybe that is the reason I am so productive when I study there? Who knows? Additionally, my favorite napping spot is in Lindy (the window seats, if you were wondering) and I don’t think I will ever find quite as nice of a cat nap spot anywhere else.

Procrastination Nation

4/17/2012

I remember seeing a piece of flair (yes, I realize this is now outdated) on Facebook that said “procrastinators unite…tomorrow!” While this is obviously making fun of chronic procrastinator’s inability to do anything productive until the moment before an assignment is due, buried beneath the joking façade, there is some truth. As a procrastinator myself, I know that the pressure of almost missing an assignment is often needed to put any effort into schoolwork whatsoever. Particularly now, with less than 2 weeks of classes to go, I find myself wanting to spend more and more time on computer doing anything but studying for my finals and writing my papers. So, in honor of finals, I thought I would share some of my favorite time-wasting websites.

1. http://iwastesomuchtime.com/
As the title implies, this website can help you waste all the time you want. Memes, funny pictures, and anything else random that could make you laugh show up on its pages. And if you become a regular (like me), the random link is great because it brings up a random (shocking, I know) grouping of things to waste your time looking at, many of which you may not have seen before. With easy links to share on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media websites, you can suck your friends and family into this wonderful procrastination tool as well.

CulturalLehigh

4/1/2012

When most Lehigh students think of culture, the South Side is not what comes to mind. More likely New York City, Washington D.C., or even the North Side pops into our heads before Lehigh’s side of the river. But the South Side has a lot more to offer than what meets the eye, specifically when it comes to food. Of course there are the tried and true student favorites of Sal’s and Molly’s, but far more diverse options are also available. Here are three South Side restaurants every Lehigh Student needs to try.

1. The Olive Branch
With delicious traditional Mediterranean cuisine, and something on the menu for everyone, this restaurant is one of my new favorite places to eat. They serve a special lunch menu available from 11am-2pm, with appetizers and entrees always available. When I ate there the other day, everything I had was delicious, but above all, you must try the baklava. This perfect blend of phyllo pastry, nuts, and honey, with its melt-in-your-mouth consistency is the perfect ending to any meal. And with the average entry costing about $12, it is definitely affordable on a college budget.

2. Nawab
Most of us, if not all, have heard tell of Nawab, with its excellent variety of Indian food.   But I would hazard a guess that far fewer of us have actually endeavored to taste what exactly this restaurant has to offer. With a $9.95 lunch buffet you get to try interesting foods you may never have dared to taste before and you get an amazing price to boot.

Disney Princesses

3/26/2012

Let’s be honest, the majority of us have probably watched Disney movies in the past year. I know I have. There is something calming in the nostalgia that ensues from watching Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, or Mulan for what is probably close to the hundredth time. My iTunes library proudly includes songs from Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. However, as I think through the deeper implications of many of these beloved fairy tales, it makes me wonder if our generation has bought into a lie, a lie that is impeding us from becoming all we are capable of because we are held back by childhood fantasies of what life and dating should be like.

The Little Mermaid teaches us that if we change the way we look and give up the thing we treasure most in ourselves, we will get the guy. What kind of a message is that sending to little girls? We have all felt like we don’t fit in, don’t belong, aren’t good enough. But this story that so many girls (many of whom are now women) love, has essentially taught us that we are not good enough as we are. However, if we change, then we can get the guy.

I love Beauty and the Beast. Belle has always been my favorite princess, mostly because she was the only one with brown hair. However, this Disney classic holds a similar message, just in the reverse. It insinuates that we can change other people, specifically the men in our lives.  Personal experience has shown me that this is one of the biggest lies I have ever believed. Going into a dating relationship knowing there are things you cannot stand about someone, but believing you can change them, is only setting yourself up for disappointment and bitterness.

Hunger Games: Join the Movement

3/18/2012

I joined the movement. After months of avoidance and indecision, I gave into the pressure. That is right; I am now part of the cult-following of The Hunger Games. Like many of you, I plan on seeing the upcoming movie during opening weekend, if not on premiere night. However, there is one factor which will split those present into two distinct categories; those who have read the book, and those who have not.

I was raised in a book loving household. My father has shelves upon shelves of books in our basement, as does my brother. My personal bookshelf has two rows of books on each shelf. At a young age, the value of reading a book before watching the movie based on it was instilled in me. When I was about 9 years old, my father began reading The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien to me. The rule was, in order to see the movies, I had to read (or in this case have read to me) the books. It took almost 3 years to finish the books, but I persevered and made it through. As many of you will be going to see The Hunger Games in a few weeks, I want to beseech you to read the book first.

There are several reasons for this, but I will only highlight the top 3:
