Wayne Kim4/28/2013 |
Meet Wayne Kim, next years SGA co-president, who is one of the most involved people on the hill. Read his interview with HCC to find out about his aspirations for Colby's future.
What are you involved with on campus?
Mostly around organizations such SGA, COOT, and CCOR. However, I try to avoid being labelled as that "SGA" individual or "COOT" individual. I try to make a point that although I'm invested in the work I do, there's a human here as well.
How did you get so involved in student government? I had a rough first year and a half here at Colby and I wanted to make a change for myself, people around me, and future generations of Colby members. If I didn't meet the inspirational and community-dedicated type of folks in SGA my sophomore year, then I would have left. And so I stayed.
What changes do you hope to make next year? |

Tips for Keeping Calm at Room Draw4/6/2013 |
This upcoming week is stressful not only because there are midterms to be taken and papers to be written, but also because its time for room draw! As a first-year student, this is the first chance you have to choose where you want to live and who you want to live with, or for juniors its time to think about apartments, off campus houses, or suites. Emotions can run high as you are forced to make quick decisions and think on your feet in the Heights lounge, so here are a few tips on how to avoid the drama and end up with a great room! Think things through ahead of time. I cannot stress this enough. Know who you want your roommate(s) to be before you get to room draw. If you are hoping for a triple or quad, be sure to plan ahead and know what the breakdown will be if only doubles or triples are left. This set plan will help avoid hurt feelings and potential rifts in friend groups. Think about where you want to live and what some of your top choice rooms may be. Floor plans will be available online, so it’s easy to look there and get a good idea of what is available. Consider where your friends are living, location on campus, and accommodation or theme housing. Sometimes you will notice a hidden gem room on a floor plan that you did not know existed on campus. When the whole process is over, everyone will have a room and a roommate, so don’t worry too, too much! Take a deep breath and enjoy the ride. Good luck! |
Knitting at Colby3/22/2013 |
For some reason, knitting seems to have taken Colby’s campus by storm this year. Most people think that only little old ladies can knit, but in fact knitting is a life-long hobby that is rewarding, easy, and calming. Girls and guys alike are creating their own winter accessories, a creative way to re-invent your winter wardrobe, by knitting them. You can progress from less ambitious headbands and scarves to more advanced items like socks and sweaters. Everyone can knit and the supplies required are very reasonably priced at Wal-Mart. Instead of buying those trendy circle scarves, why not make them? It is always rewarding to be complimented on your scarf and to say that you made it yourself! Knit items make great gifts too. So give it a try! Grab some needles, your favorite color yarn and teach yourself to knit. There are many great YouTube videos that explain every aspect of knitting very clearly and make it easy for a beginner to learn the basics. Colby also has a knitting club that offers needles, yarn and instruction. Knit-wear keeps you warm in the winter and can transition easily into spring ensembles as well. Go give it a try! Why You Should Be Watching HBO’s “Girls”3/7/2013 |
If you haven’t already heard of it, Girls is a TV series on HBO that discusses real-world issues with humor and collegiette relativity. Only in its second season, Girls is not hard to catch up on and the episodes are all under thirty minutes, the perfect length for a quick study break. Sometimes compared to Sex and The City, Girls tells the story of four friends living in Brooklyn as they struggle to find themselves after college. Not exactly the glamour of Sex and The City, but that’s part of the charm of Girls. Girls features a realistic, and therefore relatable, depiction of what post-grad life may be like. Complete with awkward encounters, stories and flashbacks to college life, the show deals with real-world issues such as sexuality, abortion, financial issues, and STDs with seemingly effortless humor (hard to believe when covering such intense topics). From drama with boys or with their parents, the four main characters, Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, and Jessa, each bring their unique and interesting perspectives to each problem they face. Hannah, the main character, deals with her weight and a semi-crazy boyfriend while also being cut off from her parents financially and struggling with finding a job. Sounds like a downer, but not at all! These encounters are always faced with humor, friendship, and love, not to mention girl power. |
