Francesca Figalo
Francesca was born and raised in Sicily, and speaks Italian fluently. She migrated to the United States with her family when she was 11-years-old. Francesca did not speak English when she arrived in the U.S., but that did not stop her from continuing to be a good student. She always enjoyed learning and opening her mind to new ideas and concepts. Francesca's favorite quote is "Veni, Vidi, Vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered) by Julius Caesar. That quote doesn't only relate to Francesca migrating to the U.S., learning a new language and adapting to a new culture, but it also relates to her battle against cancer. She was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma in 2005 and completed all of her treatments in 2006. She has been a cancer survivor since then. Francesca continues to live her life to the fullest and to achieve success. She is currently a Communications/Journalism student at Kean University, NJ. Prior attending Kean, she attended Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, NJ, where she earned her Associate's Degree in both Communications and English. Francesca is passionate about writing and editing. She has written several news and feature articles for The Tower, Kean's student newspaper, and she is currently the Head Online Editor for The Tower. Francesca is also an intern at www.thealternativepress.com, where she covers events and meetings in Westfield, NJ. Her career goals include writing feature stories for The New York Times and eventually, launching her own magazine company. When she's not busy, Francesca loves to spend time with her family and her friends. She enjoys cooking and creating new recipes, watching movies with her boyfriend and simply relaxing. After the fall semester is over, she plans to launch her own blog about her two favorite topics: fashion and food. A little advice from Francesca: "You can do anything you set your mind to."

Meet Ryan Gaydos: Sports Writer, Sports Editor and Founder of The Keansburg Press12/9/2012 |
Some students might attend their first year of college not knowing what career they want to pursue or what major will suit them best. Ryan Gaydos, on the other hand, is one of those students who knew what career to pursue since he was a child. “Since second grade, I knew I wanted to become a sports writer and choosing the path of journalism is the easiest way to do that,” Gaydos, a junior majoring in journalism, said. Although Gaydos will graduate from Kean University in May 2014, he has already gained much experience in journalism. He is a featured baseball columnist at RantSports.com and a site editor at TrueBlueTribune.com, a New York Giants blog. He is also the co-founder of The College Court, a college basketball driven blog. Aside from being a columnist, a site editor and a co-founder, Gaydos is the sports editor for The Tower, Kean University’s student newspaper. His responsibilities as a sports editor include assigning stories to staff members and editing them. “I contribute stories to the sports section as well,” Gaydos added. |
Kean: A Winter Wonderland12/7/2012 |
It's December, which means that winter is finally here! The first signs of the winter season appeared last week when Kean University was slowly dressed in white as snow (with a mixture of rain) landed on the campus's property. While walking outside, students used their umbrellas to protect themselves from the large snowflakes that were blown by the wind. The campus truly looked like a Winter Wonderland...well, at least for a day! Too bad that the snow melted by the end of the night. But it's just the beginning, so who is ready for more snow? |

Avani Kapur: From Campus Correspondent to Editor11/30/2012 |
Sometimes, one might wonder what type of opportunities will be offered after being a Campus Correspondent at Her Campus. Let’s not wonder too much. Let Avani Kapur tell us instead! Kapur, a recent graduate from Kean University, was a Campus Correspondent for the Her Campus Kean chapter for two consecutive semesters. She managed the site, wrote articles, and updated both Twitter and Facebook statuses from September 2011 to May 2012. An English writing graduate with a minor in communications, Kapur is passionate about writing. “I first decided to major in English because I love writing, but I did not expect that to turn into an interest in journalism until I began taking communication classes as electives,” Kapur said. “I enjoyed the classes I was taking and wanted to work with The Tower, so I chose to do a minor in my senior year.” In 2011, Kapur studied abroad in Florence, Italy. After she graduated from Kean in May 2012, she returned to Florence. That August, Kapur began working as a contributor and as an editor for The Florence Newspaper, an English-speaking newspaper that publishes monthly. At The Florence Newspaper, Kapur is responsible for editing articles and advertorials, helping develop and elaborate story ideas, assigning articles to interns and working with the rest of the team. Kapur returned to Florence because after studying abroad, she realized that she wanted a change in her life. |

Recipes That Will Transform Your Thanksgiving Turkey into a Dessert11/15/2012 |
It’s the middle of November, which means that the fall semester will be over in a month. It also means that a season full of different holidays is about to start as soon as next week. The first holiday to mark the calendar is Thanksgiving. When I think about Thanksgiving, three thoughts come to mind. The first is giving thanks. After all, that’s what Thanksgiving should be about, correct? The second thought is staying home from school and spending quality time with family and friends. The third is food. Yes, you’ve read correctly…food! Who doesn’t think about food during the holidays? Since I’m passionate about food (I’m positive I’m not the only one) and since Thanksgiving is approaching fast, I will introduce you to some recipes listed on Taste of Home magazine that will help you transform your turkey into a delicious dessert. You don’t want to miss this! [pagebreak] Cookie Turkey This recipe is quick and easy to prepare. All you have to do is purchase the ingredients and attach them together with frosting. Kean's Campus Dressed in Yellow, Red and Orange for the Fall Season11/8/2012 |
Before Hurricane Sandy stormed its way into New Jersey, Kean University sparkled with a variety of colors: yellow, red and orange. Walking on campus was like walking into an enchanted forest. Leaves were falling on the grass like petals of a flower; others scattered on the sidewalk while riding the wind. When you walked over them, they crunched underneath your feet. Soon, another season will terminate. Winter will conquer autumn and every tree on campus will be stripped from its leaves completely. Let's hope that this winter season the snow will make frequent appearances in order to keep those trees dressed in white. |
