Tyler Somers

5/13/2012

Last weekend was Imagine RIT. The designer behind the official poster of the festival was second year Graphic Design student, Tyler Somers. His design was reproduced hundreds of times and thousands of attendees to Imagine were able to take home a copy of the poster with his design. Check out as Tyler tells us a little bit behind his design for the Imagine poster in this week’s Campus Celebrity!

When did you decide you wanted to submit a design for Imagine? Why?
It was originally a project for my Typography II class with Lorrie Frear. Before this, I had no intention to submit a design. However, once I had spent a lot of time on creating the poster for my class, I decided I might as well submit it. My goal was to get into the top five designs that would go to President Destler for selection.

How did you come up with the design?
Once I decided on my concept, I played with ideas of how to represent diversity and collaboration. One of the ideas that I came up with was a maze. I started to look at different types of mazes such as corn mazes, video games, labyrinths, puzzles, and more. I really liked the shape and look of circular toy mazes. I then created a maze of my own involving the letters of "IMAGINE."

Santiago and Leonardo

4/22/2012

This week we’re meeting the other pair running for Student Government president and vice president. Victor Santiago and Mark Leonardo are currently not a part of Student Government but are involved extensively with other campus clubs, organizations and events.

Running for the presidential seat, Santiago is a fourth year, Graphic Design major.

What made you get into Student Government in general? At RIT?
I was part of the Student Government in high school. But what really got me interested in Student Government is the idea that I can do more for the RIT student, than just being an OA, RA, etc.
At RIT especially, because I love this school and want what is best for the students.

What made you decide to run?
I decided to run because after listening to students complain about certain topics, I felt that I can bring this to SG and work of them myself. In addition, I feel that with the experience I have gained from my involvement at RIT, I am the best candidate for the students in which I will represent.

Why did you agree to run as Mark's running partner?
I chose Mark because we have done so much together and we work well together. In addition, I feel that we both have a passion for this school and he will help me/I help him in accomplishing all our goals and anything that comes up during the term.

What, personally, do you want to bring to the position if you are elected?
I personally want to bring a different perspective to RIT, an outsider perspective, seeing that I have not been directly involved with SG.

His running mate, Mark Leonardo is a fourth year, Multi-disciplinary Studies major.

Taylor Deer and Sarah Thomas

4/15/2012

The celebrities on campus this month will be the different candidates running for Student Government positions for the ’12-13 school year. Current president and vice president, Greg Pollock and Phil Amsler are both graduating leaving the competition up to fresh faces.

Two teams have stepped up to run. Taylor Dee and Sarah Thomas, two Student Government veterans are running against Victor Santiago and Mark Leonardo II, both extremely involved on campus.

With Women’s History month only being last month, the Campus Celebrity column urges all the ladies out there to take advantage of the opportunity to vote; a right that many women who we celebrated last month fought for.

In honor of the elections, the column will be dedicated to learning a little bit more about the candidates running.

This means instead of just one, this week’s Campus Celebrity is actually “celebrities”.

Let’s meet one of the running pairs, Taylor Deer and Sarah Thomas and learn more about their campaign.

Taylor Deer is running for the Student Government president. He’s fourth year Business Management major. He currently holds the position of Greek Senator with Student Government.

RIT's Center for Women and Gender

Kate Gleason

3/13/2012

To help celebrate Women’s History Month, the Campus Celebrity Column is going to showcase pillars of Rochester Institute of Technology through out history. Instead of just being students, professors or alumnae, the column is going to take a look at key women figures in RIT’s history, starting this week off with the well known, Kate Gleason.
The name Kate Gleason is mostly known around campus as the College of Engineering. It is the only engineering college to be named after a woman in the entire country. Born and raised in Rochester, Gleason actually attended both Cornell University and Sibley College of Engraving and Mechanics Institute, which is now RIT.
She got her start in machine working at the age 12 by working for her father’s company, Gleason Works. Later in life, she helped push the company to become a top name for gear-cutting machinery in the U.S.
She stole the limelight from her father, when Henry Ford completely accredited her with the creation a machine that cut gears faster and more cost efficiently then most machines at the time.
Gleason Works was not the only company to profit from Gleason’s skills. Becoming the first women president of a U.S. national bank in 1917. During her duration as president, she promoted large-development of low cost housing.
Also becoming the first woman to be admitted into the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Gleason engraved her name into the world of engineering for being a smart, savvy businesswoman, as well as a top-notch engineer.
When she passed away, she left an estate of 1.4 million dollars, some of which was allotted to RIT, although much of it went to charities.

Greg Pollock

2/6/2012

He always seems to be smiling when you pass him on the Quarter Mile or grabbing his usual at Artesano's. Greg Pollock, RIT's student body president, is one hundred percent a campus celebrity. Whether it be him rocking his RIT orange blazer or making an appearance, Mr. Pollock easily captures this week's Campus Celebrity title.

Nikko Schaff

1/29/2012

Nikko Schaff, working through his second year at RIT is easily classified as a campus celebrity. In his first year here, he created an app that is actually available on the Apple app market. He's currently working on a company in his second year. Balancing both school and becoming an entrepreneur, Nikko Schaff is definitely a RIT Campus Celebrity.

What is your major? And year?
Computer Science, 2015.

Why did you choose RIT?
It was the best college, in my eyes, that offered a strong educational experience, while providing the resources to allow me to work on my own independent ventures.

What has been your favorite class so far?
Most likely Science & Technology values, as taught by Thomas Cornell, Ph.D. He expertly linked themes and raised significant thoughts about particularly interesting figures in the history of Western science and technology, and the societal impact they made.

Favorite part of RIT?
RIT is a university that’s full of surprises. On the surface you may only notice a sea of bricks, but when you start to discover the amazing and unique programs at the School for American Crafts, or learn about the mind-blowing research that our professors have done, you start to gain an appreciation for RIT that is difficult to duplicate anywhere else.

Favorite professor?
Ryan Garcia, Ph.D, professor of political science. I had an Introduction to International Relations course with him, and from there I’ve learned a great deal, we’ve become good friends, and he even helped me form the idea for my current entrepreneurial venture.

Favorite place to eat?
The Grille at Global Village has never disappointed, but it’s hard to walk by Artesano without being tempted for a hot cider.

What is your app? What does it do?

Shelby Hill

1/23/2012

With Co-ops at E! and Fox news, fourth year journalism major, Shelby Hill is this week's campus celebrity. It isn't just the fact she's interviewed celebrities and been to award shows, her involvement on campus with SportsZone and her sorority truly captures what a RIT campus celebrity is all about!

Brendan Nagle

1/15/2012

RIT alumni Brendan Nagle is undoubtedly a Campus Celebrity. Graduating from RIT with a film major, Brendan went on to complete graduate school at Syracuse University and is back in Rochester currently working a feature film called “The Essentials” that is set to premiere downtown around February/March! Also, check out his website, http://thebrendannagle.com, to check out more of his work!

What was your favorite class/professor?
Flag Football with Roger Worsley. Took it 8 times in 4 years. I considered myself a double major in Film Production and Flag Football.

What was your favorite food place on campus?
Specific item... Freshens' Berry Breeze Smoothies. I think they've changed the ingredients now though. Blasphemy. That stuff was nectar of the gods.

Least favorite part about RIT?
In the spring, those Bradford pear trees on the quarter mile made me want to commit olfactory suicide. I know they look really nice... but you can't smell them in pictures.

What dorm did you live in?
NRH6 freshman year. I was an RA for the remainder of college, so I went to Sol 3, Phi Delt, then ROTC. Always all guys. Gotta love the testosterone overload on an eventful weekend.

Piece of advice about how to survive RIT?
Quit complaining about what you think sucks, just go out and meet friends. You'll miss it when it's gone.

Advice to girls about how to survive RIT?
Don't be afraid to step up and challenge the men in any regard, as you'll probably win, then will soon be regarded as an item too hot to handle and will avoid a lot of objectification while gaining respect from both genders.

Have you visited recently?
Yes, I'm working on the movie in Rochester and am still pretty tight with a lot of the younger Film kids and AEPi guys.

Melissa Bromley

12/13/2011

Taking on both a vigorous hockey schedule and RIT academic schedule, Melissa Bromley easily captures the title "Campus Celebrity." Hailing from Aurora, Canada, Melissa is hard-working both on the ice and in the classroom. Last season, she was one of 10 Tigers who played in all 30 games, setting a single-season program record as well as making Dean's List.

What is your major? And year?
Journalism major with a minor in Business Administration. Second year.

Why did you choose RIT?
I chose RIT because it has a great reputation and offered a good balance for my program. Also, the fact that co-ops are mandatory was very nice! I chose RIT too because of the location, and the fact that the women's hockey team is very good and competitive.

What has been your favorite class so far?
My favorite class so far has to be Public Speaking. It wasn't even my best grade, but it was so fun and challenging that I always looked forward to going, and I was really able to improve my skill in public speaking when so many people struggle with it.

Favorite part of RIT?
Well, my least favorite would be parking, but once I'm on campus, I love the fact that everything is relatively close. Since everything is max a 10 minute walk it is really helpful when I have to rush from class, to the rink, back to class, etc.. Also, I love the fact that I can work for SportsZone because it is giving me real life experience on campus in a field that I want to pursue.
