8 Things You Can Do TODAY to Prevent Getting Cancer

5/26/2012

It’s no secret that according to the American Cancer Society, cancer is on the rise.  It’s become rare not to have someone close to you, or at least someone you know who has or has had cancer.  Although we have not found a cure, researchers are constantly learning more about what you can do early on to help lower your chances.  Young women especially need to be aware of prevention tips and early detection strategies to combat cancer preemptively.  Here are eight things you can easily incorporate into your daily lifestyle to help prevent cancer, starting TODAY!

1. Snack on antioxidants
Ok, not literally. But choose healthy nutrient-rich foods that contain these cancer-fighting vitamins and minerals.  According to the National Cancer Institute, there has been considerable evidence that antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals, and may slow or prevent the development of cancer.  Get your plenty by eating foods rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E.  Think baby carrots, berries, and leafy greens—all of which are good for you inside and out.  Pick one of these foods and have it for a snack this afternoon, and pick another to try tomorrow!

How to Get a Bikini Body in One Month

5/4/2010

Here’s the good news: summer is fast approaching!  The bad news? Like many girls, you may find yourself dreading any activity that involves you in two tiny pieces of unforgiving fabric known as the bikini.  Fear not HC-ers!  With the help of University of Maryland senior and fitness guru Kelsey Martin, who is on her way to becoming a group fitness instructor, HC is going to teach you the moves to get a better bikini body in only one month.

Kelsey’s bikini workout consists of a few moves that are full-body toners, and then a move to tone specific muscle groups.  “The most important part to toning the body to be bikini-ready is to have regular cardiovascular workouts ideally four to five days a week,” she recommends.  Although you can’t really target specific parts of the body to lose weight, circuit training of high intensity cardiovascular exercise is one of the best ways to get full-body toning.

“I do not suggest doing all of these moves together in one workout,” says Kelsey.  She explains that you should try to target two muscle groups with a combination of muscle-specific moves and the full-body toner exercises shown below.  Ideally, spend 35-45 minutes total on the workout, then spend the last five to ten minutes stretching.  Do not work the same muscle groups every day, so that the muscles have time to rebuild.

So lace up your sneakers, turn up your iPod and get ready to slim down and tone up!

What to Wear to Graduation, Spring Formals, Parties & More

4/19/2010

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming… “Oh my god I have nothing to wear!” Sound familiar?  Warmer weather brings more social occasions – but that doesn’t have to mean more stress over your outfit.  With the help of style expert and Tommy Hilfiger PR assistant Sarah Marshall, HC makes dressing for spring flings easy and fun with our 2010 Spring Events Style Guide.

Graduation

One word for graduation attire: appropriate.  Even though the weather might be warm, and you may be baking in the hot sun for hours, a graduation is not the time to be overly trendy or skimpy when it comes to your clothes—in all likelihood, many of your relatives will be there. Keep the fabric light and very “daytime,” opting for cotton or linen over silk, for example.  And color?  “Don’t be afraid to go for color and play with proportions,” says Marshall, “ I love the idea of a shorter dress with long bell sleeves. It’s conservative, yet playful.”  Since many pictures are taken with graduation gowns on, another great way to make a statement is with your shoes.  Pick a shoe in a bold color or pattern to peek out from under a drab gown.  We love these turquoise ones from DSW – only $40!

"I'm Not On a Diet, I Swear!": The Non-Diet Diet

3/23/2010

It’s Friday night, and you’re out to dinner with your closest friends – A, B, and C. “Mmm… everything looks so good!,” says B. “Agreed,” chimes in C, “I could literally order anything on this menu!” In between chatting about the econ midterm and Channing Tatum, the waiter comes over to take your order. A orders first: “I’ll have the gluten-free pasta please.” Huh? Since when does A have celiac disease? “I’ll have a burger. But hold the bun. And definitely no cheese. Oh, and instead of fries I’ll have steamed veggies,” says B. The waiter turns to C: “Oh, just a Diet Coke for me. I don’t eat past 7pm!”

The HPV Vaccine: Everything You Need to Know About Gardasil

3/2/2010

You may have seen the commercial urging you to be “one less.” And chances are your doctor or gynecologist has asked if you have, or would like to be vaccinated. Both are referring to protecting yourself from Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that according to WebMD, is actually really common - at least 50% of all people who have sex at some time in their lives will get it. However, while some people don't have any symptoms and the HPV infection goes away on its own, certain types can lead to cervical cancer. Fortunately, HPV is 100% preventable when we make smart, informed decisions about our health. Receiving regular pap smears and using protection while having sex are two safe practices recommended by all doctors. However, a fairly new option is Gardasil, a cervical cancer vaccine that protects against four types of human papillomavirus (HPV) – two types that cause 70% of cervical cancer cases and two more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. Every year, about 12,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer and almost 4,000 die from the disease, with college-age women falling in the age range considered most at risk. If you’re feeling a little in the dark about HPV or the vaccine, don’t fret! Consider this Gardasil 101:

Dress Like Your Favorite TV Star...for Less!

2/15/2010

We watch them on TV every night – we laugh with them, cry with them, but mostly…we drool over their clothes. Yes, we’re talking about your favorite girls on the small screen. But who can afford their designer duds on a college girl’s budget? That’s where HC comes in. So here are some tips on how to dress like your favorite TV style icon, without your wallet having to suffer.

Blair Waldorf of The CW’s Gossip Girl can be a bitch sometimes, but we gotta admit – the girl has some serious style. Although she tends to be a chameleon when it comes to her wardrobe, whether it be sixties-themed or á la Audrey Hepburn, our favorite has to be classic, preppy, school-girl Blair, with a twist of course. Check out Forever 21’s line Twelve by Twelve full of unique cardigans and skirts at great prices. Rock these key pieces with tights, flats and a headband for true Blair style.

Kristen Cavallari, the newest addition to The Hills, never seems to be lacking in the drama department…and the same goes for her clothes! This beachy California born and bred girl mixes casual simple pieces with trendier pieces, with the result always being fun and flirty. Although she can often be seen in nothing but a bikini, we love her look here.

Be a Healthier "Broad"... with these Tips from Abroad!: Healthy Habits From Around the World

2/2/2010

Here’s something to chew on: According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 65% of American adults are overweight and 31% are considered obese and at risk for chronic disease. American society has become what the Center for Disease Control and Prevention terms “obesogenic,” or an environment that is focused on increased food intake, unhealthy foods, and lack of exercise. In the World Health Organization’s comprehensive list of the fattest countries around the globe, the U.S. weighs in at a whopping number nine. Not exactly a statistic to be proud of. Sorry, Paris. We don’t all have your metabolism! The fact of the matter is that the U.S. stands out for our culture of unhealthy habits – and although we like to think we know it all when it comes to diet and exercise, it seems that compared to our sisters abroad, we’re working harder on our health with more lackluster results. So are girls in other countries keeping these big health secrets that we don’t know about? We did some research and found these surprisingly easy-to-adopt, healthy habits from abroad:

Go Natural…With Your Medicine: Inside Alternative Health Fixes – Meditation, Essential Oils, and Tea

12/29/2009

College girls like us are busy. So, when we don’t feel 100%, it’s often easier to pop a pill or guzzle an energy drink to feel more like ourselves. However, in recent years, unnatural and chemical-filled fast-fixes (5-hour energy anyone?) have been getting a thumbs-down for our health, not surprisingly. So what should you do? Try turning to alternative or natural health fixes, which are getting more attention from health experts, who believe that certain remedies can aid in curing anything from mild stress and sore throats to helping prevent cancer.

The term "alternative medicine" is used to describe healing treatments that are not part of conventional medical training — like meditation, essential oils, or herbal medicine. But how do you determine the healing from the hokey? According to the Mayo Clinic, be a “savvy consumer”; try to keep an open mind, and do some research about potential benefits and risks. But since you’re busy, we’ve gotten the research started for you: here are some natural remedies and practices that are easy to incorporate into your crazy life and may actually help you simplify:
