HC Abroad: A Sad Goodbye

4/29/2012

Hello Collegiettes!

I am writing to you after safely landing back in the United States! Sorry I didn’t have time to write to you during my last week and a half, but between traveling and finals, my schedule got a little too crazy.  So let me take some time to back track and fill you in on all the amazing memories I have had over the last two weeks.

First, I  embarked on my first solo journey to Florence. After a few minor mishaps, I arrived, and it was an amazing experience to travel on my own. Unfortunately the weather was rainy the entire trip, but I didn’t let it stop me from exploring the  city. I saw the Duomo, the Accademia, the Uffizi, along with half a dozen other museums and monuments throughout the city. I also got a food education sampling gelato and pasta often.
During my time in Florence I took a day trip to Lucca to visit a high-school teacher, Mrs. Kaplan and her husband whom I have grown close to over the years since graduation. They were my chaperones when I took my first abroad trip to Italy during my senior year of high school in 2009, and now we were reuniting in the beautiful country almost exactly three years later. The Kaplans showed me around Lucca, and then we ventured to Pisa for a few hours, before heading back to their apartment, where Mr. Kaplan had cooked us a wonderful dinner to share.

HC Abroad: J'adore Paris!

4/11/2012

Hello Collegiettes!

My whirlwind weeks of travel are in full spin right now as I am in the four day break before I leave for Florence on Friday, and Barcelona immediately after on Monday. This is also the last week of my internship, and a week where I am seeing two plays for my class, so there is no shortage of busyness for sure.

As I mentioned last time, over the weekend I went to Paris with my friend Maria from Fordham! We preceded the visit with a re-viewing of a classic Parisian film, well at least to any former 90s tween girl: Passport to Paris, the Mary-Kate and Ashley movie. This set us up with a mind full of quotes and mottos to live the weekend by, and we had an absolutely amazing experience. We arrived Friday night, and the first thing we did, after eating of course, was take the Metro to see the Eiffel Tower. It was honestly one of the most magical moments. I often have delayed reactions when I visit cities-- it happened for me in London, and with some of the places I have traveled, that I don’t really realize that I am there until after I have left—but when I turned the corner to see the beautifully glowing tower in front of us, there was no doubt where I was, and I instantly fell in love with the city.

HC Abroad: A Walk in the Park

4/5/2012

Hello Collegiettes!

This week is the second to last week of my internship, so things have been hectic as I am finishing up the projects I have been working on during this phase. Also as I mentioned last week, friend visiting time/traveling time has commenced thus my already busy schedule has somehow become even busier.

One of my favorite parts this week was a wonderful walk that I took with two of my close friends here in London. Kelsey and I met Emily at the Vauxhill Tube Station, and we walked from Vauxhill, along the Thames to Battersea Park. First of all Battersea Park is now one of my favorite places in the world—it’s huge, it’s absolutely beautiful, and probably one of the peaceful places I have ever been. After walking in the park for a bit we crossed over the Albert Bridge through Chelsea and back home. In total we walked about five miles, but it was such beautiful walk through diverse areas of London.

Friday, My friend and Fordham roommate Emily arrived from Edinburgh (a different Emily from the previous mentioned one, confusing I know!) Saturday we went to Camden markets, and about 10 other markets in the area where we tested out our haggling skills (not the best success), but the fun part of the day, was that I got my nose pierced! It was a somewhat spontaneous decision, but something I have wanted for a long time, and Other Emily was very supportive, taking before and after pictures for me and all! Saturday night Emily and I met up with a third roommate Hallie who is also studying London, and we all sat down for typical pub dinner.

HC Abroad: A Nice Day for Bath!

3/29/2012

Hello Collegiettes!

Just over a month is left here in London, and it is all becoming extremely bittersweet. While I do miss my friends and family from home and from Fordham a lot, I also have fallen in love with London and it is going to be terribly hard to leave.  But I am still here, leaving a bucket list full of things I still need to see, and spontaneous experiences waiting to happen!

This past weekend I did a day trip to Bath and Avebury. The Jane Austen lover in me squealed as we passed through rolling green hills, and Victorian mansions that conjure perfect images for my fantasy life complete with my very own Mr. Darcy… This fantasy was only solidified as our tour guide point out Jane Austen’s home in Bath as we made our way to the center of the city. Back in reality, Bath is one of the most incredibly beautiful cities I have ever seen. I would honestly spend my whole life there if I could. We started our day by touring the famous Roman baths that were built over 2,000 years ago. After seeing the Baths and touring the museum, My friends and I ventured to explore this architectural gem of a city. We got some ham and brie sandwiches at a local deli and walked to beautiful park on the river that was flooded with people enjoying the sunshine and the vibrant flowers that had abundantly started to blossom.  After lunch we walked around the city a little more and toured the old Victorian market that lies at its center.  To end our stay we got some fudge for the road and made our way to Avebury.

Hello Collegiettes!

Happy Spring! This week in London the flowers have started to bloom, the birds are chirping, and the sun is making almost a daily appearance, a very conflicting image from the stereotypical view of London! I only have five weeks left in this beautiful city, and I honestly can’t believe how quickly the time is flying by.

This weekend actually begins the start to my visits and travel plans for the rest of the semester. This weekend I am doing a day trip to Bath, next weekend my friend Emily is coming to visit from Edinburgh, the following weekend my friend Maria from Fordham is coming and we are traveling to Paris, and then after that I travel to Florence and Barcelona, and then its finals and I go home! It is crazy to think how fast London has gone by, BUT it’s not over yet and I am still determined to make the most of it all.

HC Abroad: Internship Phase has Begun!

3/14/2012

Hello Collegiettes!

I have successfully completed the first week of my internship. YAY! So now that my internship basically controls my life I figured this week I would tell you a little bit about it, why I am so excited, and what I have done so far.

As I mentioned last week I am working at Nueluxe. It is an online magazine focused on sustainable luxury that is about to launch by late Spring. In case you aren’t familiar with sustainable luxury, it is a growing trend in the luxury industry to be both environmental and socially conscious. The Nueluxe website will focus on categories from hotels and resorts to fashion and makeup, to ease the consumer in finding socially and environmentally responsible businesses, while also telling the consumer some of the background behind that venture.

So that is a little background as to what the magazine is about and what it hopes to do—I have come in at a really exciting point in the process, just because there is so much to be done. My boss, Nina Rennie, who is the founder of the company, is giving me really hands-on opportunities to write as well as be involved with the PR leading up to the website launch. I have also just been doing a lot of research on sustainability, because honestly before this internship my knowledge was fairly limited.

HC Abroad: Lost Amongst the Stars

3/6/2012

Hello Collegiettes!

This week marks the half-way point for my time in London! It is crazy to think that I have already been here 8 weeks.

So to address the question I am sure many of you are wondering… I have an internship! Hooray! I actually interviewed yesterday and I start tomorrow. I am going to be a journalism and public relations intern for Nueluxe online magazine. It is a magazine that is on the verge of launching that focuses on sustainable luxury.  I met with the founder of the magazine for my interview, and I will be working directly with her. It is a great opportunity and I am extremely excited to get started!

Okay so now moving on to the rest of the week!

On Saturday my friends and I went to the Tate Modern Museum, specifically we were really interested in the Yayoi Kusama exhibit.  We decided to walk to the museum from Westminster as it was an absolutely gorgeous spring-like sunny Saturday, and one of my friends thought she worked near the Tate Modern and knew how to get there. Well, we did walk to the Tate, about a mile and a half to two mile walk to the Tate Britain… Not the museum we were planning on going to! We then realized that the Tate Modern was about 3 miles in the other direction and across the river.

HC Abroad: Family Vacation Time!

2/28/2012

Hello Collegiettes!

I honestly can’t believe it’s already Tuesday again! This week flew by and I am still trying to recover and settle back in!

First Edinburgh was amazing. I got to see my roommate from Fordham, Emily, and she accompanied my brother and me on our tourist excursions around the city. On an extremely windy day, we toured Edinburgh castle, which is the center of the town. At the castle we not only took in some incredible views, but also got to see the Scottish Crown Jewels. After the castle the three of us went to Elephant House. Now I referenced on my last post that I am a fairly large (extremely large) Harry Potter fan, so Elephant House was the somewhat Holy Grail of my trip. If you are possibly not the big Harry Potter nerd I am, Elephant House is the café in which J.K Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Sorcerer’s Stone in America). I honestly can’t put into words how it felt to sit where she sit, it is still an experience I am trying to comprehend.

In Edinburgh, my brother and I stayed in an adorable Bed and Breakfast called Priestville Guest House.  It is run but a husband and wife, Colin and Trina. They were so kind and wonderful to my brother and I. At breakfast we tried the traditional haggis! We both liked it, when we didn’t think about what was in it… We also visited the National Museum of Scotland, which is huge. Dolly the sheep rests here, amongst countless other exhibits. My favorite was a modern Scottish history exhibit. The exhibit concluded with a section dedicated to Scottish identity, and how Scottish people identify themselves based on nationality, character, food, language, stereotypes, and so on. It was extremely relevant to some of my studies about British identity in London, so I found it really interesting.

HC Abroad: The View From Above

2/21/2012

Hello Collegiettes!

I am currently writing to you from a train heading out of King’s Cross station on route with my brother to Edinburgh! (The Harry Potter nerd in me is freaking out over that sentence for so many reasons)

It has been an absolutely crazy week, between writing papers, studying for finals, as well as introducing my brother to the wonderful city of London.

Our first stop this weekend was to Abbey Road. My brother is a huge Beatles fan, so this was an absolute must during his visit. What we didn’t realize/ think about was the fact that Abbey Road is a major road in use… so cars get rather annoyed when people try to do the infamous Beatles pose in the crosswalk, which tends to happen every minute or two.

Saturday we went to the Doctor Who Experience. If you aren’t familiar with Doctor Who, it is an extremely popular British television show that both my brother and I are very big fans of (stemming from my Dad). The experience was a mixture of a 3D experience as well as an exhibit featuring costumes, outfits, and props from the over 50 years of Doctor Who history.  Also on Saturday I took my brother to traditional British pub for his first authentic Fish & Chips.

HC Abroad: Snow, Cliffs, and Castles, Oh My!

2/15/2012

Hello Collegiettes!

The cold is finally beginning to thaw here in London after we have been experiencing one of the coldest winters in years! It has snowed three times in the last two weeks, and like I had mentioned in last week’s post, it is completely baffling to the British natives. For me, it has been slightly annoying and destroyed some of my not-snow-prepared footwear, but it has been nothing I am not use to during my winters in Massachusetts and NYC.

With the frigid temperatures came the typical winter cold as I was telling all of you about in a previous post; I have basically been sick since three days after arriving in London, so after 3 weeks of nagging from my mother and finally getting sick of being sick I saw a doctor earlier today, and as mother always knows best I have a sinus/ear/ some sort of throat infection. Joy of joys. BUT now I am on medication and will hopefully be back to feeling better ASAP!

This weekend I did embark on some fun adventures! Friday night I did my first ever pub crawl with some of my floormates in Camden—incredibly fun night. If you don’t know what a pub crawl is, you pay a small cover price and you get free entry to 5 pubs for free as well as free drinks and discounts at the pubs you visit. It was a lot of fun and a great way to explore Camden!
