HC Miami Tips for a Strong Semester Finish4/29/2013 |
Finals are soon approaching and can be a stressful time for everyone involved. To make the week of finals as stress free as possible, there are many ways to keep your mind and body in good shape to get yourself through all of the exams and multiple hours of studying in King.
The first thing that is very important is to keep your body healthy. To do this, make sure you are giving your self enough time to get an adequate amount of sleep. To avoid staying at King all night, make sure you have appropriate time management. So instead of going to king at 5 to study, wake up a little earlier and try to get your studying done earlier rather then later so you can try to get a good 7-8 hours of sleep.
After sleep, eating is important as well. It is important that you are fueling your body with a lot of food and water that will help nourish your body after all of the caffeine your body will be taking in from coffee and Redbull. These easily dehydrate you and your body needs to have energy for your brain to think and take in all of the information.
Study breaks are also crucial. Studying all day in King can take a toll on your body so allow your self to have some free time. This can be as easy as walking uptown to get some fresh air, walking back to your dorm for a little bit, or going to the rec to relive stress and get a quick work out in.
Working out is a great way to reenergize and relieve stress. Miami’s Rec Center offers a bunch of classes like their new Barefoot work out class that could help you switch up your normal cardio routine and have somewhere to go that is quieter. If you don’t feel like waiting in line for machines, there are some hiking trails around Western campus and if you like the outdoors, Hueston Woods park could be a good place for you to take a break.

The Miami Redhawk hockey team has had a winning season and they are expected to continue the wins through the last weekend of regular season play at home against Ohio State. With a record of 21-8-5, the Redhawks are currently ranked third in their division, CCHA. After a sweep this past weekend at LSSU, the hopes are high for the next weekend of games at home. If the Redhawks win at home against OSU, there will be a trophy ready at Goggin and the spirits for the playoffs will be high. Steven Spinell, Senior Defender and Captain said that you always want to have the in-state bragging rights when it comes to playing Ohio State. When asked about this being the last home game and if anything was going to be different about it he said, “Not really, just another home game.” Winning out will ensure a post-season birth for the Redhawks. “The intensity of playoffs is always extremely high. We are just planning on sticking together and to our game plan and we will see where it takes us,” Spinell said. The Ohio State games are the last home game for six of the seniors on the roster including star forward Curtis Mackenzie and forward Marc Hagel. After the Hockey City Classic in Chicago, it was clear that Miami Students and fans are supportive of this year’s hockey team and are excited to see their highly-ranked school have a chance of making a push deep into the playoffs. Fact or Fiction: Eating Disorders at Miami2/28/2012 |
In 1997, Glamor Magazine featured an article claiming that about 20 percent of Miami University female students meet official clinical guidelines for eating disorders. That statistic has caused a myth that has stuck and contributed to the many thoughts about eating disorders on campus. Dr. Rose Marie Ward, the associate professor of health promotion at Miami University, is currently researching all elements of eating disorders. When she arrived at Miami she heard the myth from the article in Glamour Magazine and began researching the true statistics on campus. According to Ward, the facts mentioned in the article came from a counselor at the counseling center, but the data was false. According to Ward, the university has more of a “Miami image” problem, where students will go to great lengths to fit the image. Ward said that the Miami Image is what students think Miami students should look like, including what clothes she or he should wear. At this time, Ward and her colleagues are conducting surveys from the students about the issue. So far, the data show low numbers, meaning that eating disorders at Miami are actually not as big as a problem as some thought. “I’m not denying that there are people with issues,” Ward said. “Students don’t know that their professors listen to what they say in class like, ‘Oh I just ate so much, I have to go to the gym.’” Ward said American culture has normalized how people obsessabout eating and the need to work it off immediately. According to Ward, this is similar to how our culture has normalized blacking out when drinking.Ward said without each female student going through psychiatric evaluations, there is no way to get a true estimate of how many females suffer from an eating disorder. |
