HC Miami Tips for a Strong Semester Finish

4/29/2013

Finals are soon approaching and can be a stressful time for everyone involved. To make the week of finals as stress free as possible, there are many ways to keep your mind and body in good shape to get yourself through all of the exams and multiple hours of studying in King.

The first thing that is very important is to keep your body healthy. To do this, make sure you are giving your self enough time to get an adequate amount of sleep. To avoid staying at King all night, make sure you have appropriate time management. So instead of going to king at 5 to study, wake up a little earlier and try to get your studying done earlier rather then later so you can try to get a good 7-8 hours of sleep.

After sleep, eating is important as well. It is important that you are fueling your body with a lot of food and water that will help nourish your body after all of the caffeine your body will be taking in from coffee and Redbull. These easily dehydrate you and your body needs to have energy for your brain to think and take in all of the information.

Study breaks are also crucial. Studying all day in King can take a toll on your body so allow your self to have some free time. This can be as easy as walking uptown to get some fresh air, walking back to your dorm for a little bit, or going to the rec to relive stress and get a quick work out in.

Working out is a great way to reenergize and relieve stress. Miami’s Rec Center offers a bunch of classes like their new Barefoot work out class that could help you switch up your normal cardio routine and have somewhere to go that is quieter. If you don’t feel like waiting in line for machines, there are some hiking trails around Western campus and if you like the outdoors, Hueston Woods park could be a good place for you to take a break.

Miami Hockey: Last Games of the Season

2/26/2013

The Miami Redhawk hockey team has had a winning season and they are expected to continue the wins through the last weekend of regular season play at home against Ohio State.

With a record of 21-8-5, the Redhawks are currently ranked third in their division, CCHA. After a sweep this past weekend at LSSU, the hopes are high for the next weekend of games at home. To end the season and have a chance to win their conference means winning against Ohio State is crucial. If the Redhawks win at home against OSU, there will be a trophy ready at Goggin and the spirits for the playoffs will be high.

Steven Spinell, Senior Defender and Captain said that you always want to have the in-state bragging rights when it comes to playing Ohio State. When asked about this being the last home game and if anything was going to be different about it he said, “Not really, just another home game.”

Winning out will ensure a post-season birth for the Redhawks. “The intensity of playoffs is always extremely high. We are just planning on sticking together and to our game plan and we will see where it takes us,” Spinell said.

The Ohio State games are the last home game for six of the seniors on the roster including star forward Curtis Mackenzie and forward Marc Hagel.

After the Hockey City Classic in Chicago, it was clear that Miami Students and fans are supportive of this year’s hockey team and are excited to see their highly-ranked school have a chance of making a push deep into the playoffs.  It’s easy to say that there will be a long line to get tickets to the Ohio State games at Goggin this weekend, as fans are eager to see how the end of the season and conference play are going to turn out. The Miami Redhawk hockey team has had a winning season and they are expected to continue the wins through the last weekend of regular season play at home against Ohio State.

5 Trends You Must Try This Fall

10/15/2012

With the cold weather approaching, it is time to put away our tank tops, high waisted shorts, and flip-flops. The trends this fall are cute, casual, comfortable, and very easy to find in stores and online.

1. Leather boots
The first thing you will see when the weather gets slightly cold is everyone’s need to put on boots. Now I am not talking Ugg boots, I am talking trendy leather. Either black or brown, these boots are essential to black leggings on the way to class or uptown. Piperlime is a great place to look for boots because they feature many styles and designers.

2. Oversized sweaters
These are essential for day drinking uptown or even to just go to dinner. You can buy these at multiple stores and in multiple colors and threads. If you want to try to switch things up, wear them off the shoulder. A few good places to find sweaters are Free People, Forever 21, and Tobi.

3. Infinity scarves
They might not be the warmest scarves, but they do compliment a lot of casual plain shirts. Infinity scarves can go with long sleeve flowy tees, baggy shirts or even sweaters. These come in a variety of sizes and colors. Some great places to look for these would be at any department store, like Nordstrom, or Forever 21 for those on a budget.

4.  Denim shirts
These are the must have for the season. They come in a variety of styles and shades of denim and look great with a pair of leggings and boots. This can be a casual or dressy look, depending on what you accessorize it with. Some great styles can be found at Tobi and J Crew.

AK: I found out that I want Panhellenic President the first week of November and started my term during formal recruitment this past winter.

HC: Why did you run for PH president?
AK: I ran for Panhellenic President because of my passion for the Fraternity and Sorority Community. Being in a sorority has defined my college experience, and I want to uphold an environment where other woman can have a similar positive experience.

HC: What is your past invovlement with Greek Life at Miami?
AK: Yes! I am a member of Chi Omega. Last year I was on the executive board as the Panhellenic Delegate. This year I only work on the Panhellenic Council.

HC: What are some of your plans or ideas for your upcoming presidency?
AK: My overall plan is to increase transparency between individual chapters, Panhellenic Council and chapters, and the tri-council. So far we have reevaluated risk management policies, recruitment, and new member education programs. The entire Panhellenic Council Executive Board wants Miami to continue being a model Greek Community.

HC: What are some of the duties you have as president?
AK: As president, I oversee all operations of the Panhellenic Association. I preside tri-council meetings and executive board meetings as well as sit on the Student Affairs Council. I am also a resource and contact point for all sorority chapter presidents.

Misfitz President: Michelle Sander

2/28/2012

Name: Michelle Sander
Year: Senior
Major: Zoology
Hometown: Galion, Ohio
Campus Involvement: President of Miami Misfitz, Phi Mu, Greek impact, Christians in Greek community for both fraternities and sororities

I recently had the opportunity to interview Michelle Sander about her Misfitz Involvement. Michelle is one busy girl as she wraps up her senior year. She is not only president of The Misfitz, but also involved in Greek life. Her music career started in high school and blossomed here at Miami. She has much to be excited about while currently planning her wedding, which is this summer in Oxford. Her fiancé also went to Miami. Can you say Miami-Merger?

HC: What does the Misfitz stand for and what do they do?
MS: The Misfitz is an all girls A cappella group, student run. Even though we are a student organization and have an advisor, we arrange all our own music and take care of expenses and plans. It’s a really cool experience to run an organization and take care of everything. I would say what we stand for is being diverse. We pride ourselves in this and being able to produce good music that requires collaboration. It is a cool opportunity to have this dynamic, which you don’t always have in other groups. We have girls from every social and racial dynamic, and for us to come together and create something as a group is so incredibly cool for us.

Fact or Fiction: Eating Disorders at Miami

2/28/2012

In 1997, Glamor Magazine featured an article claiming that about 20 percent of Miami University female students meet official clinical guidelines for eating disorders. That statistic has caused a myth that has stuck and contributed to the many thoughts about eating disorders on campus.

Dr. Rose Marie Ward, the associate professor of health promotion at Miami University, is currently researching all elements of eating disorders. When she arrived at Miami she heard the myth from the article in Glamour Magazine and began researching the true statistics on campus. According to Ward, the facts mentioned in the article came from a counselor at the counseling center, but the data was false.

According to Ward, the university has more of a “Miami image” problem, where students will go to great lengths to fit the image. Ward said that the Miami Image is what students think Miami students should look like, including what clothes she or he should wear. At this time, Ward and her colleagues are conducting surveys from the students about the issue. So far, the data show low numbers, meaning that eating disorders at Miami are actually not as big as a problem as some thought.

“I’m not denying that there are people with issues,” Ward said. “Students don’t know that their professors listen to what they say in class like, ‘Oh I just ate so much, I have to go to the gym.’”

Ward said American culture has normalized how people obsessabout eating and the need to work it off immediately. According to Ward, this is similar to how our culture has normalized blacking out when drinking.Ward said without each female student going through psychiatric evaluations, there is no way to get a true estimate of how many females suffer from an eating disorder.
