Her Campus Gets to Know Gabby Douglas!

4/15/2013

On April 2, 2013, Bucknell had the privilege of hosting Gabby Douglas, winner of both the individual and team all-around gymnastic competitions at the London Olympics this past summer. Winning gold skyrocketed Gabby to international fame as the first woman of color in Olympic history to become an individual all-around champion and the first American gymnast to win a gold medal in both the individual all-around and team competitions. CCs Sarah Dubow and Liz Bacharach were lucky enough to go to the Meet and Greet with the Olympic star. Though not a formal interview, Sarah and Liz chatted with Gabby over bull dip and pita (which Gabby ate too!) and got to know the star off the mat. Here are some of the fabulous things we learned from talking to Ms. Douglas!

1.     The Fab 5 have a group text going. We imagine the convo something like this…

Douglas: Just got to weird school with cows…good ice cream though!

Raisman: Just made out with Mark Ballas <3 Totally hotter than Lochte

Maroney: I am so not impressed.

What inspired you to start Dumbledore’s Army and when did you start it?

I actually am not the originator of Dumbledore's Army - the club was started by Bucknell Alum Julie Kohn in 2009.  Julie dreamt up the idea of a Bucknell Quidditch team but, faced with the setback of insurance policies and University rules, she changed her focus and created DA.  Julie passed on the torch of Minister of Magic (president) during the spring of my Freshman year and I've been leading the club ever since!

Ode to House Party

3/21/2013

Mud.

But seriously….

I sat here thinking what to write.  An ode?  What does that consist of exactly?  How about going old school with an acrostic?  That seemed super poetic back in fifth grade.  Then it came to me: a letter.  So here we go: a letter to House Party.  3…2…1…

Dear House Party Weekend,

So no, I was not born in the right generation, one that entitled me to the effervescent three-day celebration of music, love, and well, life in the ripe year of turmoil, 1969.  Sure there are conspiracies and a gamut of recollections depicting the festival far from as beautiful as its original publicity illustrated.  However, as a wandering Dead Head in the wrong generation, you, my friend, House Party Weekend, are as close as I will get to such a celebration of life, and the pursuit of well in this case, fratiness.

I just want to write to you to say thank you.  Just straight up thank you.  This is not like that forced thank you letter your mother adamantly demands you write to your estranged elderly aunt who got you yet another copy of “Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul”; I mean seriously, you’re no longer a teenager and sure as hell do not need a mass produced child encyclopedia to teach you how to deal with stress.  But to you, House Party Weekend, thank you for your breath of fresh air.
