Get Hooked Up With The Reel Knights5/2/2012 |
If you are looking to join an exciting organization on campus, look no further! Whether you love the outdoors or just having a great time with friends, Reel Knights is the club to be with. The Reel Knights fishing club has made many accomplishments in their short, yet explosive, existence. Since their inception in 2006, they have become national champions in collegiate bass fishing, as well as one of UCF’s premier clubs. With 50 members (including lady anglers), a talented fishing team, and multiple events, the Reel Knights will only continue to grow. “We have been successful in the college fishing scene for the past four years,” states Austin Bayoumi, Reel Knights president and soon-to-be graduate. Within the club is the smaller bass fishing team, comprised of members who must tryout every fall. This team tours the nation to compete in collegiate fishing tournaments. Their most coveted achievement is their 2011 national victory in the BoatUS Championship. “On the FLW College Fishing side of the game, we have placed top five in several qualifiers and have sent teams to regionals three out of the four years of the circuit's existence, including a team this year,” says Austin, recounting their success. “We have also qualified for two of the three national championships put on in this young tour's lifetime.”

“Business Attire” Basics For The Everyday Collegiette4/20/2012 |
College isn’t just the time for an education; it’s also the time to make career connections. Whether you have an internship, a job interview or are attending a career expo, you won’t make an impression if you don’t look the part. So what exactly is “business attire”? How can you dress for success and still look stylish? Collegiettes are often faced with these questions, and this article is aimed to help. Now with different jobs and internships come different standards of attire. For example, if you are affiliated with something in the fashion industry, you are allowed more of a creative outlet with your clothing. This, however, is not always guaranteed. It is best to be safe with your business attire, at least in the beginning of your networking ventures. This requires subtle color/style of clothes, accessories, and makeup…but don’t fret! You can still look stylish while reflecting your professionalism. The key to this is having a variety of essentials that you can mix and match. So push aside the mini skirts and the crop tops, and make room in your closet for these “business attire” basics. Bottoms: Khaki Pants |
#ImHonest2012… Are You?4/12/2012 |
One night I was doing the usual “Facebook routine.” My newsfeed, however, was far from the usual. Almost every post made in my hometown (Tampa, FL) was long, heartfelt, and contained the hashtags #ImHonest or #ImHonest2012. Upon further inspection, I found out it was a Facebook page and a social media movement – both created by two aspiring rappers from the Tampa area. So what is I’m Honest 2012? The exact description is below: #ImHonest2012 is a cultural movement. It's about accepting our identity and individuality; taking back the words that are used against us or the things that are built up within us, and in turn, we are making it a part of our character. There is beauty in flaws. Our generation has so many expectations placed on us that many feel the need to "fit an image." We are taking image back - Self-image. People are posting long, paragraphed “autobiographies” about their flaws, hardships, and what they love about themselves. It might seem a bit rash to put it all out there on Facebook. Indeed there are a few critics. However, looking past the social media trend, I’m Honest 2012 provides an outlet of catharsis that is free of judgment, and an amazing sense of camaraderie and support has developed from it. Some of these statuses are receiving over a hundred likes, and all of them receive multiple loving comments from peers. Not only is it a cultural movement, but also an effort against cyber bullying.

Caught in the Walk of Shame3/28/2012 |
Despite popular belief, not all “walk of shame” stories begin the morning after a party. Sometimes you are just caught in the act and forced to deal with the awkward reality. For your entertainment, a few collegiettes have decided to share their stories. All student and location names will remain anonymous.

Inspiration: The Artist That Every Girl Needs on Her iPod3/23/2012 |
Have you ever stumbled upon a song that spoke to you? Not just any song that you liked, but one that resonated with your heart? I remember experiencing this my freshman year of high school, when I listened to my first song by Mary J. Blige. My mother had introduced her to me, explaining how her music was inspiring through hard times. She stands today as a personal favorite, and I believe that every woman should listen to her. Empowering and inspirational, Mary J. Blige relates to women everywhere. She preaches about inner strength, self-respect, love, and learning from the negativity in life. Whether you’re down and out or feeling glamorous, she has it all. Sean Combs (P. Diddy) says, “Her voice is Visual; you can see what she’s saying.”

Toxic Love: When Should You Leave a Relationship?3/14/2012 |
You’ve given it your all, and it seems like nothing is working. The sex is great, and the time spent together is enjoyable, but you find that you are sad equally as much, if not more. Every relationship has its ups and downs, but when do those ups and downs become a viscous circle? When does love become toxic-love? It’s hard to leave a relationship, especially if you’ve invested so much time and effort into that person. But while it may seem scary to let go, it could be one of the best things to happen to you. Now I’m not saying you should leave after a few fights. Adversity is healthy and helps a couple’s love grow. Listed below are signs of a negative relationship. If you or your boyfriend are guilty of more than five of them, you should take letting go into consideration.

Treasures Galore3/3/2012 |
For the antique enthusiast, it is a treasure trove of goodies. For the poor college student, it is an ocean of jewelry and knick-knacks. For those with more lucrative intentions, it offers unique furniture and collectors’ items. What could this possibly describe? It is none other the Renningers Extravaganza! Renningers Extravaganza is an antique fair, a flea market, and a farmers market all in one. It travels to Florida three times a year in a little town called Mount Dora. Every third weekend of January, February, and November, the town is flooded with people ready to partake in the event. Being only forty-five minutes away from campus, this event is great for UCF students.
Now I’m sure many of you are thinking this is just another flea market. Wrong. It’s called an extravaganza for a reason! The entire event is located on 117 acres. There are over 1,000 vendors located both inside and outside. Thus, visitors can alternate between the fresh air and sunshine to air-conditioned buildings. Different vendors have different treasures; many of them have saved special merchandise just for this event. These treasures can range from jewelry, professional artwork, tools, flowers, produce, tribal antiques, fur coats, furniture, vintage surf boards – and this hasn’t even scratched the surface. “They offer quite the variety,” says Sandy Stewart, an avid Renningers attender. “There are things you’ve never seen before, and things you may never see again.” Sandy learned of Renningers Extravaganza through Southern Living magazine. She made her first trip with her sisters in 2002, and has been hooked ever since. “I knew I wanted to keep going back. You discover something new every time.” |
Calling All Cyclists2/20/2012 |
A university with over 53,000 students means two things – a large campus and heavy traffic. Both of these can be frustrating when trying to get to class on time. So what’s the solution? It’s simple! There is a reason behind every bike rack on campus, because biking is the way to go! Not only is this optimal for time, but it is also great for exercise, gas money, and the environment. The biking community here at UCF is steadily growing. A driving force behind this is none other than the Spokescouncil, an organization dedicated to bike awareness. This group can be found at the Student Union every Tuesday and Wednesday, where they fix students’ bikes for free. They also work with officials to make the campus more biking friendly. Many activities are hosted by the club to promote the sport in a fun and interactive way. Spokescouncil president, Marcus Bagnell, has been interviewed for more information.

The Old Florida Outdoors Festival2/18/2012 |
Orlando is considered the “New York City” of Florida. This is part of what makes UCF so unique. Every type of food, store, and entertainment imaginable is within a ten minute drive. However, while this may provide a variety of activities nearby, it leaves little opportunity for the students who crave the outdoors. Luckily, the Old Florida Outdoors Festival has been established in Apopka, a city only thirty minutes away from Orlando! This festival is a three day series, featuring hands-on exhibits for fishing, hunting, shotgun sports, paddle sports, archery, landscape art, and wildlife conservation. There is also a nationally sanctioned dog competition, a farmers market, a chili cook off, boat displays, kids’ activities, and bird watching through the Lake Apopka Restoration Area. Celebrity anglers, exhibition shooters, and Discovery Channel’s Swamp Brothers made their appearances throughout the day. At night, festival goers attended a concert featuring country singers Jake Owen and Tracy Lawrence. February 10-12 was the festival’s debut, and with its huge success, it will most likely become an annual tradition!
