PostSecret Review

5/14/2012

“Sometimes when we think we are keeping a secret, it is really keeping us.” – Frank Warren.

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to see Frank Warren speak live at a PostSecret event on campus. It was the perfect mix of everything I hoped it would be – inspiring, emotional, and life changing. To give a brief background on PostSecret, it is “an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard." Select secrets are either posted to his website or included in his PostSecret books, museum exhibits and/or events.

Divisi's Tierney Hossle

4/24/2012

Name: Tierney Hossle

Year: Sophomore

Major: Sociology

Favorite music artist(s): John Mayer, Muse, Death Cab, Childish Gambino, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Offspring, Lupe Fiasco, Missy Higgins, Sara Bareilles, Atmosphere, Amy Winehouse.. I’ll pretty much listen to anything.

Can you give a short background on Divisi?
Divisi was started in 2001 by eight University of Oregon women and a male beat boxer called “Eight Ladies & a Beau Tie,” then they lost the guy and became an all-female group and changed the name to Divisi.

What is like to be a part of Divisi?
Divisi is a crazy experience that is challenging, but so worth it. It takes up a lot of time but also makes us the group that we are. The best part about it is getting to make great music with the amazing people that have become my best friends.

Does the group go on tours and/or compete?
We didn’t compete this year but we go to Berkeley, CA every year with On The Rocks for a showcase. We also take other trips around the West coast and groups have done tours in the past. In the past,
Divisi has competed in the International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella and decides each year if they want to compete or not.

When/where are concerts/shows held?
We have concerts throughout the year in Eugene. We also sing at other group’s concerts or festivals and have other gigs that we are hired for. We sing every Friday at 4 pm in the EMU with On The Rocks and Mind The Gap (be sure to check them out!!!).

How To Get That Job or Internship: Tips & Tricks

3/21/2012

With spring term almost upon us, the time has come to start searching and applying for summer internships/jobs. And if you are a senior (like me) with the graduation finish line looming closer with each passing day, the time is pressing to start your job search.

I began the process a few months ago, and it has been the most terrifying, yet exhilarating process. Think about it, when will you ever again have this much freedom to be able to move to a new city and experience a completely different type of life, while hopefully going into work each day and getting to do what you love?

During these past few months, I have read quite a few job search tips from various blogs, articles and tweets. I thought I would summarize and share these tips (with a few added opinions + commentary of my own) as I feel they are necessary for any job seeker to be aware of.

1. In my opinion, the absolute most important part of the job search process is to be invested in and passionate about the jobs you are applying for. It is true that when job hunting, you need to be proactive and on top of things. However, this does not mean that you should apply for 100 different positions, all in different industries with very different job responsibilities. Instead, maybe choose to pick one or two relevant positions that you are truly interested in and passionate about. Once you have chosen your desired position(s), then you can go ahead and apply for as many of those positions as you want! Just keep in mind that potential employers are going to know when you’re hoping to catch a lucky break by reaching out blindly into the dark and applying for anything and everything you can get your hands on.

What I Learned in Women's Weight Training

3/8/2012

My Women’s Weight Training class is nearing its end, and I wanted to share a few of the takeaways I have learned over these past few weeks.

First, a little fun fact:  did you know that after working out one of the best things you can drink is chocolate milk? Who would have thought!

Apparently the ingredients in chocolate milk make it the perfect post-workout recovery drink. When compared to milk, water, or sport drinks, it has double the carbohydrate and protein content, which is perfect for replenishing tired muscles. Plus, its high water content replaces the fluids you may have lost when working out and sweating, helping to avoid dehydration.

So, why try weight training? In the simplest terms, it is both challenging and beneficial to your overall health, fitness, and well being. Weight training for women has the potential to:

Improve body composition by maintaining or increasing lean body mass and decreasing the relative percentage of body fat Increase your bone mineral density + may help/delay the development of osteoporosis Enhance cardiovascular health by decreasing blood pressure and exercise heart rate Reduce anxiety/depression Increase muscular strength and endurance

Weight Training Tips: Her Way

1/19/2012

For me and the majority of my friends, braving the weight room at the student rec center is a daunting task. From time to time we will go in there and do ab work on the mats and maybe lift some dumbbells, but braving the weight room machines is a different story. There are so many mysterious machines and intimidating heavy lifters that we usually stick to the cardio room and the upstairs track.

My friend and I decided to get over this ridiculous fear of the weight room and its intimidating machines, and signed up for a women’s weight training class this term. While I’m definitely no expert on the subject, I thought I would share a few of the tips I have learned thus far.

First, I want to start by addressing a myth that left my heart pounding and pulse racing. After our first week of weight training, my friend and I were feeling pretty great because we had managed to, well… survive, and we had worked hard and already felt that it was paying off. And by paying off I mean that we were incredibly sore! Anyway, we were talking with one of our guy friends about the weight we had squatted that week, and then the fear set in. Apparently there is a myth out there that the more weight women use and the less repetitions they do, the more it results in getting bulkier rather than leaner. According to the myth, women are supposed to use less weight and do more repetitions.

A Taste of the Holidays: Drinks You Have to Try!

12/14/2011

As the old saying goes, it is the most wonderful time of the year! Now that fall term is over, winter break is upon us and the majority of us are heading home for the holidays. Although the height of the holiday season has begun and we are all busy hanging lights, decorating trees, and buying presents… there is still time for some holiday fun to be had! So, when you get together with your girlfriends for a girls night or a holiday party, spice up the gathering by making holiday drinks. These drinks can be great for any holiday occasion, and making them with friends is a fun way to get in the festive spirit. I have gathered some various drink recipes for you to try, courtesy of the Food Network (of course). The drinks are simple, fun, tasty, and look adorable! So mix up these drinks, sit back with your friends by the fire, and enjoy a taste of the holidays.

Santa’s Sleigh Cocktail
Prep time: 7 minutes. Serves: 4.

What you will need:

White sugar crystals (preferably course – these can most likely be found in the baking aisle of any grocery store)
2 cups store-bought eggnog, chilled
1/2 cup brandy
1/2 cup amaretto liqueur (it has a bit of an almond taste to it, and is also great when paired with coffee)
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 scoops vanilla ice cream
4 cinnamon sticks

Now, to get started:
First, dampen the rims of 4 martini glasses and then line the rims with the sugar crystals.
Next, combine eggnog, brandy, amaretto, nutmeg and ice cream in a blender; process until smooth. Pour mixture into martini glasses and garnish each glass with a whole cinnamon stick. Enjoy!
