BSR Shirts

5/11/2013

If you went driving along Bridge Street on May 10, you were sure to see plenty of white shirts. The t-shirts are decorated by the people who plan to participate in BSR. Then, everyone signs each others' shirts. It's a fun tradition and a great way to meet new people!

"Single and born to mingle"

Year: Senior

Major/minor: Biology Major - Health Science Minor

Involvement on campus? Why are you involved with all these things? Do you like them?

I am currently a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, INC. and I pledged fall 2009. I am also involved in the community services department as I was president last year. I love what I do for Oswego because I love giving back and providing my community with tons of service opportunities. I've also been on 4 alternative break trips. I've done community service in Virginia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and the Dominican Republic.

What's your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I love being active. I workout daily and play basketball as much as I can. I also like to bowl i'm getting so much better! Anyone want to go bowling?

Why are you so active, would you consider yourself a "health nut?"

Like I said, I like to work out but i LOVE to eat! I try to eat 5-6 times a day. Food makes me so so so happy. If you could have any superpower what would it be? It would be the power of laughter so I could make the girl of my dreams (when I find her) laugh whenever she was sad =)

Goals after college? Why?

With Spring Comes Brighter Patterns

4/5/2013

Spring is here!! Kind of. Now and then Oswego's lake is illuminated with sunshine and colors begin to appear around campus. If you haven’t been living under a rock, then you have probobly taken notice of the brighter, and more unique style backpacks, and purses, girls are carrying. There’s no doubt that these backpacks/purses and other Vera accessories are more than just book holders. Vera Bradley began with just a basic backpack, than branched into creating lager ones with a pocket, which will fit a laptop perfectly.

Each season brings about new pattern to choose from. It doesn’t matter if you prefer a small tote, large backpack, mini backpack, or purse for campus living, Vera Bradley has it all! Not to mention a unique style to match any girl’s personality. Visit their website or ask the next girl you see with a Vera Bradley bag what theme she is rocking!  http://www.verabradley.com/

Jillian Phipps Junior, Journalism major and Creative Writing minor grins with her gorgeous, and very (helpful book carrying) Vera purse!

Like or X me: Introducing, Tinder!

2/23/2013

Oh, fabulous Tinder. What is this App you may ask yourself? Well, it’s a new social media device that allows you to meet and connect with people around your area. This may sound creepy, but if you’re bored of Snap Chat or your obscene Tumblr feed, Tinder is awaiting your download.

Tinder is the newer version of Hot or Not and allows single (Or taken), college students to talk with people who are around their age and location! Simply download the App on your Android or iPhone and begin the entertainment. Don’t worry though; no one will know you’re using it as a dating source. If you’re not interested in finding any particular guy or girl then enjoy random people who come up on your feed or the fact that your ex boyfriend even has a Tinder.

Steps to a successful Tinder user

After downloading the App, link the App to your Facebook. (Tinder will not allow posts to your wall)

Glitter = New Year’s Eve

12/12/2012

Once finals are done and everyone’s back at home, it’s time to begin those New Year’s Eve plans.

New Year’s is always an exciting, yet, sometimes, stressful holiday. Learn to plan ahead and you won’t be disappointed.

First, planning that ideal location to bring in the New Year is always an important task. Nobody wants to get into an argument with friends over where you all want to rage for New Year’s. So, do yourself and your friends a favor and plan in advance! The locations can be somewhere simple, like New York City, the place everyone always wants to experience New Year’s Eve. Keep it simple, and throw your own New Year’s bash and have all your friends pitch in for decorations, food, and beverages. Remember, champagne doesn’t always have to be the expensive stuff.

Second, the outfit that turns heads. Be sure to not think about your outfit for the big night until you have your location planned. Try something new this year. Be creative. If you don’t want to spend money on that fancy, black, shimmery dress, look at the clothes you already have. The best thing to make you stick out is to try bedazzling some old clothes. Be comfortable, and bedazzle some jean high waisted shorts with silver gems. Pair any of these bedazzled shorts with your favorite black, or solid colored shirt and accessorize. Also, if you’re into rocking that “little black dress” this year, don’t be afraid to rock some vibrant, solid high-heels. Try neon pink! Bring in the New Year outside of your comfort zone.

Fathama Ahmed: The Adventurous Type

11/29/2012

Fathama Ahmed is a junior wellness management major with a minor in athletic coaching.

In the beginning of her spring sophomore year semester, Ahmed started Oswego's running club. Ahmed went straight to The Point to discuss a possible running club at Oswego.

“I wanted to start a non-competitive running team. I knew a lot of people who wanted to run so we formed a chill group of people to meet up and run,” says Ahmed.

Ahmed started off with just a few members who actually made the commitment to daily runs on and off campus. With the start of Ahmed’s junior semester the club had 25 committed members. Runs go from 3-5 miles and to cycling classes at the gyms around campus. Ahmed enjoys runs on her own, to as far as the local Wal-Mart and Rice Creek Field.

Starting up your own club on campus can be difficult. Ahmed jumped right into filling out various amounts of paper work to get a running club up and started.

“Students who are involved with the club feel great after runs. I personally feel students are more likely to be more productive with their schoolwork and time,” says Ahmed.

Ahmed feels the club not only benefits students academically but socially, too.

“Kids are less likely to become involved with drugs and alcohol when they are involved with more activities on campus,” says Ahmed.

Ahmed plans on studying abroad next semester in England. Ahmed will be taking classes at The University of Chester.

Pea coats

11/16/2012

It’s that time of the season again! Pea coats are always a casual yet impressive way to show off your style around campus. Pea coats look great for an interview or business meeting. Whether you prefer hooded, patterned, long or short pea coats, there’s always a style that will fit your needs. Xpress, American Eagle and Macys have great pea coats to rock this winter.

Speaker Samantha Shelton, FITNESS Magazine

11/13/2012

A small town girl has gone from a high school graduation class of 26 students to graduating from SUNY Oswego, and is now taking on a position as an Editorial Assistant for FITNESS Magazine.

Shelton spoke at the Living Writer’s Series class on Monday, Nov. 5. Journalism and Creative Writing students eagerly lined up for questions and comments as Shelton ended her success story about breaking into the magazine industry.

“It’s all about getting your foot in the door and then working your *ss off,” said Shelton, encouraging students to network and stay involved with social media.

Always a fitness junkie, the Oswego alum worked for the campus fitness centers as a personal trainer and student manager before landing an internship at FITNESS, which she was eventually able to turn into a career. To combine both passions, she wrote newsletters promoting the fitness centers programming, along with health tips and stories of students’ own fitness journeys.

But before all of that began, Shelton subscribed to FITNESS at the age of 12 and fell in love. Describing the magazine as “geared toward ‘real women’ who enjoy working out and eating the occasional cupcake,” she knew it would be a perfect fit if she could one day land a position. The magazine reaches out to 7.7 million subscribers and, although the average reader is 38, Shelton now receives letters from women as young as 14 years old, all the way up to  65.
