The DL on Dillo Day Performers

5/9/2012

Now that we know Steve Aoki and Cold War Kids will be headlining our beloved Dillo Day, we thought our readers would like to know a little more about the two artists. Are they hot? Not? Will they sing their way into our souls? Check out a few fun facts below:

Steve Aoki

With shoulder-length hair and a thick mustache, Steve Aoki may not be your typical dark and dreamy musician, but his electro house beats and funky street style will be sure to keep you entertained. A Cali boy from Newport Harbor, Aoki grew up only 20 minutes from The Hills star Lauren Conrad. He’s also the son of the guy who founded Benihana, the brother of supermodel Devon Aoki and the founder of Dim Mak records. Aoki's latest solo album, “Wonderland,” was released January 2012 and features guest vocalists and musicians LMFAO, Kid Cudi, Travis Barker, will.i.am, Rivers Cuomo, Lil Jon, Chiddy Bang and more. If his crowd-pumping dance tracks don’t get you going on Dillo Day, his cool factor alone will.

Cold War Kids

A group after any hipster’s heart, Cold War Kids are an indie rock band who “strive to make honest songs about human experience in orchards and hotel rooms, laundromats and churches, sea ports and school halls,” according to their Facebook page. Also Cali residents, the band formed in Long Beach during 2004 and has since produced three studio albums: “Robbers and Cowards,” “Loyalty to Loyalty,” and their 2011 release “Mine is Yours.” The four members are tattooed, scruffy, and maintain perfectly messy hair. Top that with soul-tinged vocals and blues-heavy instrumentals and you’ve got four seriously sexy musicians.

Fifth Annual Unity Fashion Show

4/24/2012

Unity Charity Fashion show celebrated its 5th anniversary Saturday in the Louis room.  All proceeds went to Playing for Change, a foundation that supports music education for underprivileged children.

Model Ebony Page gets her hair done for the show.   “We wanted to be a little bolder,” said Rob Han, director of clothing, “and attempt a compromise between the Northwestern fashion scene, maybe bring it somewhere in the middle.”

Annie Hayford sits still as a make-up artist applies eye shadow to her lids.  “It’s really fun to get your hair done, do your make-up, and just get be a model for a day.”

Steve Madden shoes line the wall in the men’s dressing room.  Unity featured 10 central designers in the show, ranging from chain stores like Gap to Chicago boutiques like The Edit.

A Guide To Summer Music Festivals

4/16/2012

Every summer, thousands of fans flock to Chicago for three-day music fests in the city.  In total, more than 250 acts will crowd into town to put on a show for Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, North Coast and Spring Awakening.  It would take 11 days, $555 and limitless energy to attend all four.  With tickets on sale now and going fast, concertgoers have little time to pick their festival of choice.  One of the confused?  Check out this guide:

Spring Awakening
New to Chicago’s music festival scene, Spring Awakening will premier June 16-17 at Soldier Field.  The show will be the first electronically exclusive festival to hit Chicago, featuring headliners Skrillex and Afrojack, as well as 35 other digitally laden names.  According to springawakeningfestival.com, tickets are set at $119.99, with children 5 years old and under admitted free.

Pitchfork
Chicago-based Pitchfork Media began throwing its own event as a spin-off of its website, Pitchfork.com, in 2006.  Housing three stages in Union Park, the festival will showcase more than 40 bands and artists July 13-15.  The line-up strikes a balance between hot-as-fire new artists and lesser-known, independent ones.  A $110 three-day pass will get you a spot at shows such as Vampire Weekend, Feist, A$AP Rocky and more, according to pitchfork.com.
“It’s a really good way to both get exposed to new music and see things you already liked live,” said Allison Schloss, a Pitchfork veteran of two years.  “The reasonable price will draw you in, but you’ll stay for the bands you discover there.”

What We Wore This Week...Dana

4/16/2012

Mondays can be rough, so I always try to wear something comfortable, but I pair it with cute accessories to keep from looking like I just rolled out of bed.  This oversized rose pink sweater topped with a glam multichain necklace is effortlessly stylish.  I paired it with sleek, black pants and black flats to keep the outfit clean and simple, while drawing attention towards my statement necklace.

Fun Spring Dates And Outfits To Match!

4/1/2012

Spring is in the air and we all know what that means: romance.  While you may have spent the chilly winter days cozied up inside with your man, the time has come to shave those legs and let them see some sun.  With a new season comes new fashion, and this spring is coming in strong with bright colors, sweet pastels, retro silhouettes and lots of skin.  Strike a balance between current and classic with these four spring date outfit ideas:

1.  A Ritzy Night On the Town

When your date decides to take you out for a “just because” dinner-for-two, put a twist on a fashion staple: turn your LBD into a LWD (little white dress).  A ruched white dress in a classic silhouette is timeless, while an open back creates a sexy surprise, unexpected for such an innocent color.  Add a statement necklace in a bright spring hue to bring both warmth and focus towards your face.  Slip on nude pumps to elongate your legs, throw your make-up essentials for post-date touch-ups in a pretty pastel clutch, and you’re ready to go!  Careful not to spill!

Unique Flirting Tips for Confused Collegiettes™

3/2/2012

Men are mysterious creatures.  It can be difficult to know what they’re looking for, when half of the time they don’t even know themselves.  But standing out in a sea of dating ambiguity isn’t as hard as it sounds. Catch your lucky guy’s eye with these unique flirting tips:

Shut him down.  Many women think the key to a guy’s heart is to be their perfect woman— have the same interests, enjoy the same music, watch the same movies, etc.  While it’s important to make a connection with your man, a little sass can be incredibly sexy.  Men are competitive by nature, so if you can dish it as well as you can take it, you’ll quickly earn respect in the bro world.  Next time you’re hanging out with your crush and his friends, take a stab at something silly like his lacking sense of fashion.  His friends will find you funny, while he’ll find the need to step up his day-to-day dress in order to impress you.

Hometown:Addison, IL
Major: Economics
Birthday:January 17, 1993
Relationship Status:Single
Graduation Year: 2015

Likes:I like to play hockey and golf and I love to eat.  Plus the generic “hanging out with friends.”
Dislikes/Pet Peeves: People being late, large egos, self-centeredness.  I’m not bothered by much, but those are the worst.

What are you involved in on campus? Club hockey and Phi Delta Theta.

What do you want to do after graduation? I don’t know, become a successful patron of the corporate world?

What is your idea of a perfect date? Plenty of laughs, plenty of different conversation topics, and a down-to-earth dinner (nothing too fancy).  I wouldn’t want to go to a movie because you can’t talk, so a moonlit walk would be a nice way to end the night.

What do you find most attractive in a girl? Humor.

How would you describe your personality?Outgoing, engaging, and entertaining.

What are some words you live by? “Worst things have happened” and “Whatever happens, happens.”

Why HC loves Rick… Not only a beast on the ice, Rick is a great dancer and always entertaining.  If you need a laugh, he’s the first one to go to.

The Perfect Valentine's Playlist For Every Relationship Status

2/9/2012

The pressure to define your status can weigh in especially heavy as Valentine’s Day approaches.  Overthinking your status can lead to a stressful V-Day, and you may find yourself asking Where is the Love? (Black Eyed Peas, circa 2003).   Whether you’re single, happily in love, or in the yet-to-be-determined limbo of DTR, music can remedy any Valentine’s Day woes.  So stop stressing, turn up the tunes, and dance your way to a Happy V-Day.  Don’t like what you see?  Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
