Favorite Spring Trends

Favorite Spring Trends
For those of us on a college budget, dressing in warmer weather takes a load off our shopping visits. I always enjoyed shopping in the spring and summer because I thought it was easier to find half the clothing. I am here to give you my favorite spring trends. They may not be on InStyle’s “it list” of what’s in, but it will be sure to make you feel like the center of attention if you rock it right.
Remember these: Wedges, silk, dresses, over-sized bags….and color blocking! Yes, it’s back.

Color-blocking: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, color-blocking is here to stay. Disagree? Let’s save it for another day. This is the time to be bold! As I’m writing this, I can picture colors of marvelous pinks and yellows paired together, greens and corals, yellows and cobalt blue. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Hit up Google and type examples of color blocking, or simply “color blocking.”

I learned from one of my friends not to be so matchy-matchy and this is the way to do it with a minimal dash of flamboyancy.

Keeping It Safe Over Spring Break

3/12/2012

On the way to your destination….

Make sure getting an oil change and having the pressure of your tires checked are at the top of your to-do-list. This will prevent blowing a gasket (which I’ve done twice) and a tire blow out. Don’t forget to take turns behind the wheel and make sure the passenger in the front seat is doing their job and keeping you awake! Make sure drivers license for all passengers are present, as well as car registration and insurance.

Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn…

Always reserve a room that’s above the first floor. According to safespringbreak.org, first floor rooms are easier to break into, and rooms above the sixth floor are sometimes too high for ladders to each. Make sure all credit cards or personal info. is locked up and if safes are offered USE THEM! Keep doors and balconies locked and don’t let just anyone come into your room.

Money, Money, Money, Moneeeeey…

If you are going outside the United States make sure you have traveler’s checks. Need to use an ATM? Go to all ATM’s in groups in the daytime. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings and cover the keypad while entering your pin. If you feel unsafe or see someone sketchy hanging out, don’t hesitate to leave and go to another.

Everybody in the club gettin’ tipsy….

Intern Diaries

3/8/2012

I’ve always went for the opportunities that people tried to talk me out of. After applying for numerous internships during the fall semester, I decided that I was going to intern for a PR company. I didn’t have any idea of where, but I knew that I would make it happen.

Staring at my phone over Christmas break I wondered who had called me from a number that was unknown. The next step was to check my voicemail, so of course I did. I got that call! The call to take a writing test (mind you I’m a senior and I had never taken one of these intimidating tests before) at a firm in my hometown for the spring.

Interning for a Public Relations agency was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Over my college career, I’ve had the opportunity to intern at some cool places as a journalism and public relations senior, but this one was it. I felt it.

A typical day at my current internship involves coming into the firm and collecting clips. Depending on the client, this process can usually take up to an hour. Clips are where most of the money comes from. Interns and coordinators are constantly looking for their clients in the media, whether it’s in the newspaper, blog, radio or news station.

After collecting clips, I’m either assisting the graphic designer with helping decide logos for a client and fulfilling any assignments given to me such as writing health and fitness articles for a client (which I’ve done a lot of) or interview employees, as well as contact vendors for upcoming events for clients.
During my current internship, I’ve chosen to take a pro-active roll other than sitting behind the desk. I’ve leaped feet first in attending client meetings and event coordinating. I’ve also made sure that I’ve asked to attend press conferences as well as pitch stories.

Vagina Monologues to Premiere Tonight

2/17/2012

Oklahoma State University will host its annual event The Vagina Monologues this weekend. Yes, I said vagina.

The first Vagina Monologues performance was performed on Broadway in 1994 by Eve Ensler.  The show is about women and their experiences of being a woman.

The Vagina Monologues is sponsored by V-Day, a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations, according to vday.org.

Each monologue will have its own story of what each woman has been through. Coordinator Megan Rappenecker said the purpose of the event is to spread the message to stop violence against women around the world.

All proceeds will benefit Stillwater’s Wings of Hope Domestic Violence services, according to the OSU Web site. Tickets are $3 to $5 with the donation of a full-sized toiletry and can be purchased in room 013 of the student union.

Don’t judge a book by its cover, but experience a walk on the wild side for yourself.
The Vagina Monologues premieres today at 7 p.m. at the Sheerar Museum at 702 S. Duncan St. Additional shows are on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
