HCM's Best Of The Best In Columbia

4/8/2012

Looking for the best place to eat waffles? How about the best place to do your grocery shopping? Well look no further; Her Campus Mizzou has you covered. We’ve chosen the 11 best spots in Columbia for collegiettes. We believe you all deserve to lead your lives in the finest way!

Best restaurant in town: Flat Branch Pub & Brewing
If you haven’t been to Flat Branch, chances are you’re either new to Columbia or you don’t know what good food truly is. Having served countless local families with mouth-watering comfort food since 1994, the restaurant is also the first brewery in town. Collegiettes who are 21 and up can try their Ed’s I.P.A. or Honey Wheat. They won’t be disappointed! The fountain flavored cream soda is one of our top picks, too.
115 S. Fifth St.
(573) 499-0400

Best pizza place: Shakespeare’s Pizza
If only we’d get a dollar for every time it’s been selected as the best pizza place in town. Better yet, it’s been named the best college hangout by Good Morning America. It’s been around 30 years and counting. Go get ‘em Shakespeare’s!
225 S. Ninth St.
(573) 449-2454

Best breakfast place: Ernie’s Café & Steak House
As the second oldest restaurant in town, Ernie’s knows how to serve your breakfast right. A day that starts with their two eggs any style along with some old-fashioned hash browns and fluffy French toast is guaranteed to be a good one.
1005 E. Walnut St.

Style Snapshot: Spring Essentials

3/5/2012

Chances are you’ve read all the available style reports out there, know exactly what to wear in the spring and are secretly drooling over Donna Karan’s latest tribal-inspired collection – and then comes the unavoidable I-wish-I-had-the-money moment. Lighten up your mood because here at Her Campus Mizzou, we believe in staying chic without breaking the bank.

Bold prints x tangerine tango
Here you have two of the most celebrated trends of spring in one outfit. If tribal prints aren’t necessarily your favorite, try either vibrant floral prints or pixelated, futuristic graphics. If you try out one new shade, pick tangerine tango. Hello, Pantone’s color of the year.

Dress, $35
Fringe bag, $65
Rhinestone necklace, $20

Cropped tops x the blue hues
These are two other trends to look out for. Be aware that when you wear cropped tops, you should still keep it tasteful by not revealing too much flesh. On the other hand, if you’re slightly more conservative when it comes to colors, stick with deeper blue hues, such as royal, indigo and cobalt.

Cropped striped pullover, $22.49
Rusty brown skinny jeans, $45
Multi-layer chain necklace, $25

Solid colors x pastel
Aren’t we all excited to finally see some soft pastel after many seasons of vibrant color block? Scores of designers incorporated lighter palettes into their spring collections – and so can you.

Best And Worst Dressed At The 2012 Oscars

2/27/2012

In spite of all the controversy at this year’s Oscars – critics said The Artist shouldn’t have won best picture and the entire show was boring and old – we have to admit that the fashion scene on the red carpet was certainly still interesting. Her Campus Mizzou picked out the best of the best (and worst of the worst) for you to decide who deserves a little gold man for style.

Best-dressed
1. Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab Couture
Turns out the multitalented actress, singer and model is a style icon, too. Strutting down the red carpet in her white sequined one-shoulder couture, Jovovich managed to make many fans’ hearts skip a beat. Just look at all those people at the back who applauded for her impeccable taste.

2. Penélope Cruz in Custom Armani Prive
Let’s just say that we immediately thought of Grace Kelly when we saw Cruz. The stunning Spanish actress carried herself like an old-Hollywood princess in her gray tulle off-the-shoulder dress, matching satin clutch and classic ’50s-inspired hairstyle.

3. Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford
While the other A-listers were decked out in the most elaborated gowns they could find, Paltrow made a chic yet effortless statement in a white, tailored dress with a floor-length cape. Did we already mention her incredibly sleek ponytail?

Style Snapshot: Summer Trends for a Head-to-Toe Makeover

5/8/2011

Why not start the summer with a fresh look? For this season, think bold hair accessories, be experimental with your nails, and treat your feet right.

Good head on her shoulders

Unless you’re Brigitte Bardot circa 1960s, who still managed to look seductive and cute with her big, fluffy bedhead, then you can skip this part. Most of us aren't a stranger to bad hair days now and again. Too much of a hassle to iron, straighten and curl? Thank goodness we can resort to the newest and hottest hairpiece — the turban. Sported by celebrities, stylists and models, a turban is definitely one of the novel trends for you to try.

Ashley Olsen, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chriselle Lim

The perfect touch

Did you know that a daring manicure can make as much of a statement as a pair of to-die-for stilettos? Here are three major nail trends that you need to know.

Chanel Le Vernis in Black Pearl, gold-foiled nails, O.P.I’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides,” backward French tips

1. Gold Digger
Simply painting on multiple coats of glittery nail polish won’t do the trick this season. To spice it up, you can either layer it over dark shades — think gold shimmer on top of dark grey — or be bold by placing gold foil on your nails to create the opaque metallic-chic look.

Pink, Blue and Neutral - Oh My! Three Can't-Miss Spring Colors

5/1/2011

With the school year winding down, a fashion season of vibrant colors reminiscent of the ’70s has finally arrived. Our favorite local boutique, Belle, is currently having a buy one, get one half off promotion, so snag some pieces in this summer's hottest shades. Go bold before you go home, collegiettes™!

Pretty in pink

If you were thinking hot pink or the fuchsia family, then keep reading! Only one pink will make the list this spring — honeysuckle. Voted as the color of the year by Pantone, it’s described as the “brave new color” that’s for everyday wear. Pair it with turquoise or neutral tones.

I've got the blues

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something … Because the newest member of the royal family, Princess and Duchess Catherine Middleton, abided by the old English wedding rhyme, you know you’ll definitely need something blue this spring. With a hint of high-voltage azure, you can never go wrong.
